Room for Revolution : George Washington and His Philadelphia Friends

March 16, 2007 — August 30, 2007

Charles Willson Peale’s George Washington at Princeton is on view at the Museum which was lent from a private collection . This visually (视觉上) striking and finely made life-size portrait records Washington’s 6-foot-2-inch figure in a pose highlighting strength , calmness , and elegance .It is put up in a room neighboring to the Powel House parlor , a period room from one of Philadelphia’s greatest eighteenth-century private homes , where Washington was frequently entertained by his friends , Samuel and Elizabeth Powel . Both spaces contain important examples of furniture by Philadephia’s finest craftsmen , such as Thomas Afflect and John Aitken . Among these is a side chair specially ordered by the Washingtons when living in Philadelphia .

Painted in Philadelphia in 1779, Peale’s painting was immediately sent to Europe to raise Washington’s reputation as a leader and the cause of the American Revolution , then in progress . Later ,during Europe’s Napoleonic Wars , a Spanish with strong sympathies with American Revolution owned the picture . At that time he added the complicated carved explanation to it , which describes Washington as “a liberator of his country who gave up absolute power.”

It’s difficult to get young people to listen to anything you say these days. They have shut themselves off from the world with earplugs attached to their personal stereos — MP3 players. With more than three million iPods and MP3 players sold in Britain every year, it’s not just young people who are in the personal stereo habit. What risk to our hearing?

When MP3 players and iPods are turned up to full volume, the sound can reach 104 db the maximum allowed by EU safety standards, and almost as loud as a pneumatic drill(110 db).

The advice from scientists is to turn down the volume and limit use of such machines to an hour a day; the producers also recommend taking regular breaks to give the ears a rest. Yet research by the Royal National Institute for the Deaf(RNID)showed that 39 percent of young people don’t practice safe listening. There is a concern that they could be creating problems for themselves later in life.

People with good hearing have tiny hair cells that line the inner ear and transmit signals to the brain, which it interprets as sound. When repeatedly exposed to uncomfortably loud noises(loud is defined as above 80 db),including music through headphones and at concerts, those hair cells require a rush of blood or oxygen, otherwise “they effectively die”, Temporary hearing loss or tinnitus (ringing in the ears)is a sign that hair cells are trying to recover, but over time recovery becomes impossible.

At UK cinemas, sound levels of 110 db have been recorded. Music played in nightclubs is so loud as to be comparable, in some cases, to standing two feet away from an aeroplane as it takes off (110 db). The level of sound at which pain starts to occur is 140 db.

61. When you use an MP3 player, you should do the following EXCEPT______.

A.turning it up to full volume B. taking regular breaks

C. using it less than an hour a day D. turning down the volume

62. Which of the following is TRUE?

A. MP3 players and iPods are always harmful for hearing.

B. Three million young people use MP3 players in Britain.

C. Most young British people suffer from hearing loss.

D. Over half of young British people practice safe listening.

63. The highest safe sound shouldn’t be louder than______.

A.80 db B.140 db C.104 db D.110 db

64. What would be the best title for the passage?

A.A Warning that Falls on Deaf Ears B.MP3 Players — Hearing Killers

C. The Causes of Hearing Loss D. Hair Cells Are Suffering from Loud Noises

An exercise method to stretch muscles and improve strength and balance is becoming popular in the United States. Here’s more about Gyrotonics and the man who invented this special form of exercise.

Gyrotonics is a kind of exercise that combines the movements of dancing and swimming with the mental and physical practice called yoga .It helps lengthen muscles, improve balance, and exercise the joints, the parts of the body where bones join each other.

A Hungarian dancer named Juliu Horvath developed this special form of exercise .After he was injured in a dancing accident, Mr. Horvath studied yoga intensely. In the 1980s, he developed a new exercise method and combined it with yoga to strengthen dancers’ muscles.

According to Mr Horvath, his method is based on the octopus, the monkey and the cat. He says these animals have few restrictions. They can move in any direction with control and strength. He designed Gyrotonic movements to help the human body move more freely.

A special machine made of wood and weights helps guide the body through the many Gyrotonics exercises. You sit or lie on a flat board. You put your legs or hands through special cloth handles attached to a line with weights. With the tension created by the weights, you must try to move through the exercise.

Seven kinds of backbone movements form the base of Gyrotonics. For example, you can stretch your back to the left and right or forwards and backwards. While moving your back, you can also work on arm or leg motions. These movements must be done in a smooth way. Often the motions are circular.

When Juliu Horvath first developed Gyrotonics, he was the only teacher. Since then , he has taught almost 70 master trainers. Now, there are more than 800 official schools in the world where you can learn Gyrotonics.

65. This passage mainly focuses on .

A. Horvath’s successful life B. a special kind of exercise

C. some advice on health care D. some uses of a special machine

66. According to the passage, what made it possible for Horvath to develop Gyrotonics?

A. His dancing-related injury. B. His failure in practicing yoga.

C. His good skills of dancing. D. His wish to be a Gyrotonics trainer.

67. What do you think inspired Horvath in developing Gyrotonics?

A. His experience in dancing. B. His use of a special machine.

C. The movements of some animals. D. The ideas from many trainers.

68. lf you intend to strengthen your body through Gyrotonics, you have to .

A. have a strong body B. turn to Horvath

C. watch how animals move D. buy the machine mentioned

69. What do we learn from the passage?

A. Many Americans have improved their health through Gyrotonics.

B. In a way, Gyrotonics is an exercise that improves yoga.

C. You only have to move your backbone when doing the exercises.

D. Gyrotonics courses can be found in most countries worldwide.

Some years ago on a hot summer day in south Florida, a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house.

He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, an alligator was swimming toward the shore. His mother in the house was looking out the window and saw the two as they got closer and closer together. She ran toward the water, shouting to her son as loudly as she could.

Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. It was too late .Just as he reached her, the alligator reached him.

Form the dock, the mother grabbed her little boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched his legs. That began an incredible tug-of-war between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the mother, but the mother was much too passionate to let go. A farmer happened to drive by, heard her screams, raced from his truck, took aim and shot the alligator.

Remarkably, after weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. His legs were extremely scarred by the vicious attack of the animal and, on his arms, were deep scratches where his mother’s fingernails dug into his flesh in her effort to hang on to the son she loved.

The newspaper reporter who interviewed the boy after the injury, asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted his pant legs. And then, with obvious pride, he said to the reporter, “But look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my mum wouldn’t let go.”

Sometimes we foolishly wade into dangerous situations. The swimming hole of life is filled with danger and we forget that the enemy is waiting to attack. When the tug-of-war begins and if you have the scars of his love on your arms, be very, very grateful. He did not and will not let you go.

70. What was coming when the boy flew into the lake?

A. Happiness. B. A fish. C. Danger. D. Mother.

71. By whom was the alligator killed at last?

A. The boy himself. B. The boy’s mother.

C. The boy and his mother. D. A farmer.

72. Which of the following can serve as the best title for the passage?

A. Save a Boy B. Scars of Love

C.A Brave Boy D. Fight with a Alligator

Heroes of Our Time

A good heart

Dikembe Mutombo grew up in Africa among great poverty and disease. He came to Georgetown University on a scholarship (奖学金) to study medicine - but Coach John Thompson got a look at Dikembe and had a different idea. Dikembe became a star in the NBA, and a citizen of the United States. But he never forgot the land of his birth, or the duty to share his fortune with others. He built a new hospital in his old hometown in the Congo. A friend has said of this good-hearted man: "Mutombo believes that God has given him this chance to do great things."

Success and kindness

After her daughter was born. Julie Aigner-Clark searched for ways to share her love of music and art with her child. So she borrowed some equipment, and began filming children's videos in her own house. The Baby Einstein Company was born, and in just five years her business grew to more than $20 million in sales. And she is using her success to help others — producing child safety videos with John Walsh of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Julie says of her new program: "I believe it's the most important thing that I have ever done. I believe that children have the right to live in a world that is safe."

Bravery and courage

A few weeks ago Wesley Autrey was waiting at a Harlem subway station with his two little girls when he saw a man fall into the path of a train. With seconds to act, Wesley jumped onto the tracks, pulled the man into the space between the rails , and held him as the train passed right above their heads. He insists he's not a hero. He says: "We have got to show each other some love."

73. What was Mutombo praised for?(回答词数不超过8个)

74. What did the Baby Einstein Company do at its beginning?(回答词数不超过7个)

75. Why was Wesley Autrey praised as a hero?(回答词数不超过10个)

第四部分:书面表达(共两节,满分35分)

第一节 填空(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

A simple piece of clothesline hangs between some environmentally friendly Americans and their neighbors.

On one side stand those who see clothes dryers as a waste of energy and a major polluter of the environment. As a result, they are turning to clotheslines as part of the “what-I –can do environmentalism.”

On the other side are people who are against drying clothes outside, arguing that clotheslines are unpleasant to look at. They have persuaded Home Owners Associations (HOAs) access the U.S. to ban outdoor clotheslines, because clothesline drying also tends to lower home value in the neighborhood. This had led to a Right-to-Dry Movement that is calling for laws to be passed to protect people’s right to use clotheslines.

So far, only three states have laws to protect clothesline. Right-to-Dry supporters argue that there should be move.

Matt Reck, 37, is the kind of eco-conscious person who feeds his trees with bathwater and reuses water drops from his air conditioners to water plants. His family also uses a clothesline. But on July 9, 2007, the HOA in Wake Forest, North Carolina, told him that a dissatisfied neighbor had telephoned them about him clothesline. The Recks paid no attention to the warming and still dried their clothes on a line in the yard. “Many people say they are environmentally friendly but they don’t take matters in their own hands,” says Reck. The local HOA has decided not to take any action, unless more neighbors come to them.

North Carolina lawmakers are saying that banning clotheslines is not the right thing to do. But HOAs and housing businesses believe that clothesline drying reminds people of poor neighborhoods. They worry that if buyers think their future neighbors can’t even afford dryers, housing prices will fall.

Environmentalists say such worries are not necessary, and in view of global warming, that idea needs to change. As they say, “The clothesline is beautiful. Hanging clothes outside should be encouraged. We all have to do at least something to slow down the process of global warming.”

Making a Better Decision

Many students are now faced with problems like deciding whether to focus on science or art. Not taking the children’s interest or preferences into account, some parents force their children to make the choice as their will, which troubles many students.

Throughout our lives we are going to have to make many choices. As students, we should talk to our parents or teachers especially on life-changing decisions. But when it comes down to it, we’re the ones who must live with our choices. On the other hand, the parents should try to help children make the best possible decisions, instead of forcing them to do something against their will.

It depends on students themselves whether they’ll be science students or arts students. Just let their hearts show them the way.

M: The young ones have to learn from different teachers. It helps them learn from different teachers. It helps them learn more.

W: I don’t care about other teachers. All I know is that Jimmy has to be in Miss Bright’s class. Why don’t your let the new teacher teach the other ones and have Miss Bright stay with Jimmy’s class?

M: We cannot allow one class to have the same teacher for more than two years. It is bad for the children.

W: If you insist, sir, I’m afraid I’ll have to put Jimmy into Miss Bright’s new class.

M: Madam, have you talked about this with your son? I think you might want to ask him first.

W: Yes, of course I did. I just told you what Jimmy told me. If you don’t accept my opinion, I will go to the headmaster.

M: Calm down, madam. I will consider what you said and give you a reply tomorrow.

Text 9

W: Morning, Mr. Bench. I’ve come to talk to you about the problems here.

M: OK, I hope we don’t have too many.

W: I’m sorry to tell you that you do have a lot of problems.

M: Go ahead, please. I’ll make a record.

W: How can eight kids live in a small 15 square-meter room without a bathroom?

M: OK, three months later they will all move into new buildings, two kids a room.

W: We couldn’t even find one piece of meat in the whole dining hall. They need nutritious and balanced meals every day.

M: Some kids are always wasting food, so we cut the meat. We have meat sometimes but not every day.

W: You should punish the ones who did it but not all of them.

M: You have a good point.

W: The last problem is that the school bus is often late; then the kids will get punished for being late.

M: Really? We’ll consider changing the driver.

W: And I suggest the teachers give the kids more homework after class.
