Compared to people with bad attitudes. people who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds, according to a new study. “It’s possible that being upbeat helps the body fight illnesses”, says Sheldon Cohen, the study’s lead researcher from Carnegie Mellon University
(CMU)in Pittsburgh.
In a previous study, Cohen and his colleagues put cold—causing viruses into the noses of 334 healthy adults. People who tended to be cheerful and lively were least likely to develop sniffles, coughs, and other cold symptoms. People who showed positive feelings were also less likely to mention symptoms to their doctors, even when medical tests detected those symptoms.
Those findings were interesting, but they didn’t prove that a person’s attitude affects whether he or she gets sick. Instead, it was still possible that a person’s underlying personality is what matters. Evidence suggests, for instance, that certain people are naturally more likely to be outgoing and optimistic, with high self-esteem and a sense of control over life. This would mean that who we are, not how we feel, ultimately decides our chances of catching colds.
To figure out which mattered more(personality or emotions), the CMU team interviewed 1 93 healthy adults. The researchers talked to each person over the phone every evening for 2 weeks. At the end of the interviewing period, people got nose drops that contained either cold or flu viruses. Then, each person stayed in an isolated room for 5 or 6 days. The results showed the everyone in the study was equally likely to get infected. Their symptoms, however, differed depending on the types of emotions that they had reported over the previous 2 weeks. Among those who reported good moods and had been infected with the flu virus, for example, 28 percent developed coughs and stuffy noses. On the other hand, those symptoms struck 4 1 percent of people who had been less upbeat.
63. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Smiles Turn Away Colds
B. An Interesting Way to Beat Colds
C. Be Outgoing and Optimistic to Fight Colds
D. What Matters More, Personality or Emotions?

A. didn’t catch colds as often
B. developed cold symptoms more slowly
C. were less likely to have cold symptoms detected
D. were less likely to feel cold symptoms
65. What mainly decides our chances of catching colds according to the new study?
A. Personality. B. Self-esteem. C. Emotions D. Attitudes
66. The underlined word “symptoms” probably means .
A. something that causes cold
B. something that results in cold
C. signs that something exists, especially something bad
D. changes in your body or mind that show that you are not healthy
D
Prince Charles yesterday pledged(承诺)to reduce the royal impact on the environment through sweeping changes to his personal lifestyle and official schedule. The prince will replace carbon—heavy private jets and helicopters with scheduled flights and train services
The move came as Prince Charles urged business leaders to
publish the environmental pact(协定)of their activities.
He said, “Few accountants and business decision-makers
ask, ‘How much of our critical natural resource is left?
How many miles of polar ice cap has our business helped
melt this year? By how many inches have we raised sea
levels? How many species have we put at risk? How
many homes will be flooded, how many people will
die of thirst or starvation because of our activities?’
These are not comfortable questions, but, by God, they
need to be asked.”
He added, “At the moment these costs do not appear in anyone’s books… Yet they are real, they are incurred now and in a relatively short time, the damage being caused may be beyond remedy.” He said the world was “running up the biggest global credit card debt in history, but with little or no thought for how the bill will ever be paid.”
Flanked by the prime minister and business and community leaders at St James’s Palace, the prince said his new “accounting for sustainability” project would give consumers the power to choose products that caused less damage to the planet.
Duchy Originals, the prince’s food company, is talking steps to work out how much carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas are emitted in growing, processing and distributing its products. The changes to the prince’s travel arrangements announced yesterday are part of a wider review of the carbon footprint associated with activities at all three of his residences. Clarence House in London, Highgrove and Birkhall on the Balmorals estate, as well as the activities of his 21 personal and 105 full-time staff. Measures include a review of electricity use, commuter and other staff travel and are intended to identify further reductions in carbon dioxide emissions. The review will report in June, when Clarence House will announce annual targets to reduce carbon emissions.

Eight athletes sat in wheelchairs on a racing track. The starter fired the starting signal and the
race got under way. The athletes pushed their wheelchairs at amazing speeds along the track. The
crowd cheered and the winner raised his hands in victory.
This race is just one of the events that take place at the Paralympic Games. These games are an international sporting event for athletes who are physically disabled. They take place every four
years just after the Olympic Games and are usually held in the same place. The name “Paralympic” comes from the Latin word “para” meaning “with”. and the word “Olympic” which comes from the name of the Greek city where the first Olympic Games were held.
The idea of a sports competition for disabled people dates back to the Second World War. The British Stoke Mandeville Hospital, which looked after wounded soldiers and pilots with back problems, held a sports event in 1 948 as part of the treatment for their in juries, three years later, a group of competitors from Holland joined the Games and the idea of an international competition was born.
The first Paralympic Games were held in Rome in 1 960. Four hundred athletes from 23 countries took part. In 1 976, the first Winter Paralympics were held for disabled athletes in winter sports. In 2008, the largest Paralympics so far was held in Beijing, China. More than four thousand athletes from 1 47 countries competed in basketball, swimming, table tennis, wheelchair racing and some other 1 6 sports.

Dear Linda,
How’s everything going? I’m having an enjoyable time in Beijing now and 1 would like to share with you my experience of watching the Olympic Games. Yesterday, I, along with my friends went to the Water Cube to cheer for the American athletes in the diving competition. I waved the flag with efforts and took lots of photos of the wonderful moment. While watching them receiving the gold medal. I acclaimed excitedly without noticing my camera drop to the ground. On my way back to the hotel. I realized my camera was gone, so I immediately rushed to the Lost and Found in Water Cube to try my luck. Fortunately, I saw my camera there as well as some other items that were returned by volunteers. With the help of the staff working there, I found the volunteer and offered him some cash in return. To my surprise, he turned me down, saying that it was his duty to do so.
I was moved by their hospitality and sincerity. I felt grateful for their help.
Yours.
Tom
第二节开放作文(满分15分)
One possible version:
In the picture, we can see a giraffe making a great effort to reach for the leaves from a tall tree, sweating. No matter how hard it tries, it still cannot get any leaf. Around the giraffe, there are some small trees which are much easier for it to approach.
Admittedly, the short. sighted giraffe concentrates all its attention on the tall tree. However, it neglects other small trees around it. As long as it moves a little backward or forward, it can reach any leaf from the small trees. In other words, the giraffe fails to make all-sided analysis.
In reality, we may face a similar situation. When we fail after making attempts, we need to consider other ways to solve the problem; otherwise. we will find ourselves in a blind alley(死胡同)just like the giraffe in the picture.
Other possible viewpoints:
*Reach for what is beyond one’s grasp
(好高骛远, 定的目标过高, 超出自身能力范围)
*Keep trying and never give up for one’s goals
(达到目标前不能放弃, 要继续尝试)

M:I started with a week in Melbourne with friends and then I took the train to Sydney. And I also
went to Uluru.
W:So amazing!

W:Hello Tony. I heard from Betty that you. Julia and your two kids went on a package holiday.
How did you like it?
M:Hello. Mary. well, we just came back last night. But we didn’t enjoy it at all. Especially Julia
felt so cross about it.
W:How come? Where did you go?
M:Jersey. It’s the Happy tour that arranged it.
W:Oh. is it? I remembered reading their brochure not long ago. It said that the hotel they arranged
was a comfortable one with a wonderful view of the sea.
M:That’s their story. In fact the hotel we stayed in was half a mile away from the sea. What’s
More, our rooms overlooked a street. It's really noisy.

W:How much will we be getting?
M:Twenty-five dollars an hour.
W:That’s not bad. not bad at a11. How did you hear about it?
M:One of the union officials told me.
W:Why haven’t they announced it yet?
M:They are still talking to management about some more benefits.
W:What are they asking for?
M:Extra vacation time. I think.
W:That’s fine, but when are they going to talk about making our work more interesting?
M:That’s a good question.
W:I get tired of doing the same thing all day every day. I, d like to be doing something different
sometimes. 1 may be looking for another job soon if they don’t give me something new to do.

W:Everyone seems to be on a diet. Have you noticed that?
M:At least. everyone is talking about it. A friend of mine is on an apple diet. She eats an apple for
breakfast, one for lunch, and two for dinner
W:That’s not good for health. Has she lost any weight?
M:I haven’t seen any results. My sister has eggs to lose weight-nothing but eggs for breakfast, for
lunch and for dinner.
W:That’ s bad for the heart! Although something contained in the eggs helps with losing weight,
too many of them will do harm to the heart.
M:I’ve read about that, too. Then what about a steak diet? One of my cousins doesn’t eat anything
but steak, even for breakfast.
W:That’s bad for the bank account.

The 500 UK motor workers who had been on strike in High Town for the past 3 weeks went back to work this morning. This follows successful talks between management and union representatives, which resulted in a new agreement on working hours. A spokesman for the management said that they hoped they could now go back to producing cars and they had lost a lot of money and orders.
And finally, the weather:After a cold start, most of the country will be warm and sunny. But towards late afternoon, rain will spread from Scotland to cover most places by midnight.
