Not so long ago almost any student who successfully completed a university degree could find a good career quite easily. However, those days are gone, even in Hong Kong, and nowadays graduates often face strong competition in the search for jobs.
Job seekers first have to make a careful assessment of their own abilities. One area of assessment should be of their academic qualifications, which would include special skills within their subject area. Graduates should also consider their own personal values and attitudes, or the relative importance to themselves of such matters as money, security, leadership and caring for others.
The second stage is to study the opportunities available for employment.
Job application forms and letters should, of course, be filled in carefully and correctly, without grammar or spelling errors.
When graduates are asked to attend for interview, they should prepare properly by finding out all they can about the prospective employer. Dressing suitably and arriving for the interview on time are also obviously important. Interviewees should try to give positive and helpful answers and should not be afraid to ask questions about anything they are unsure about. This is much better than pretending to understand a question and giving an unsuitable answer.
There will always be good career opportunities for people with ability, skills and determination; the secret to securing a good job is to be one of them.

As we grow up, we gradually develop a set of our own values or beliefs. These are influenced by society, our family, the education we receive and so on. Once this value system is set up, it’s not easy to change later in life. Financial experts say that every one also has their own belief of how to manage their money. According to our different values, experts put us in three categories. They are: the ant, the cricket and the snail.
◆ The ant ---- works first
Just like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people don’t care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they earn so that they can enjoy life when they get old and retire. The ant loves to save but they could make more out of their money if they were willing to invest in some funds and stocks with low risk.
◆The cricket ---- fun first
The cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn’t think too much about the future. They even borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These people have little savings. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy insurance.
◆ The snail ---- lives under pressure
The snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take big long-term loans(贷款) from the bank in order to buy things such as luxury houses. They are happy to take big loans even though they are not sure they can afford it. This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.
60. One’s values may ______.
A. be his ways of managing money
B. be his beliefs about society
C. determine his family and education
D. influence his behavior
61. Mr. Smith always enjoys spending a weekend with his friends, fishing, hunting and playing cards. Moreover, he spends money in a very luxurious way. So, ________.
A. Mr. Smith belongs to the ant type

63. According to the passage, the most suitable title would be ______.
A. Spending Value B. What Comes First
C. How to Understand Your Values D. Work and Fun

What will you say about yourself on the Net?
People tend to become more personal and hide less of themselves when using email. Researchers from the Open University in Britain found in a recent study that there are good reasons for this.
The team of researchers asked 83 pairs of students, all strangers to each other, to solve a problem. They had to discuss this question: if only five people in the world could be saved from a world disaster, who should they be? The pairs of students had to talk over the problem either face-to-face or via computers. Dr Johnson said, “They told their partners four times as much about themselves when they talked over the Internet as when they talked face-to-face. When the computers were fitted with cameras so that students could see each other, this limited the personal side of the conversation.”
Generally the information was not extremely personal. It was mainly about things such as where they went to school, or where they used to live. But some students discussed their love lives, and personal childhood experiences.
Dr Johnson believes that emailing encourages people to focus on themselves. And when they do this, they become more open, especially if there are no cameras. “If you cannot see the other person, it becomes easier to talk about yourself. This is because you are not thinking what the other person is thinking of you. So emailing has become the modern way of talking,” said Dr Johnson. However, this style of talking is not entirely new. “In the 19th century people started to use the ‘telegraph’ (US’ wire) to communicate. The same kind of thing happened and people ended up speaking more freely.”
Dr Johnson thinks that emailers need to know about these effects of emailing, especially when they start work in a company. “If you don’t know about it, you could find yourself saying more about yourself than you wanted to.”
The Open University in Britain offers correspondence courses and courses on the Internet to students of all ages.
64. The subject discussed in this text is _______.
A. how people open up when e-mailing
B. how people do research studies
C. how to communicate at work
D. how to discuss and solve a problem
65. The reason that some couples talked freely about themselves is that ______.
A. the cameras on the computers were turned on
B. they had to discuss a question
C. they didn’t talk about very personal things
D. they couldn’t see each other
66. What did the writer mean when she/he said “this style of talking is not entirely new”?
A. Using a telegraph is like using e-mail.
B. People talk about the same things as they used to.
C. A similar thing has happened before.
D. The same thing has happened before.
67. In the writer’s opinion, one should _______.

Happy birthday! Do birthdays really make people happy? Of course they do. Birthdays celebrate the days when we were born. Besides, that extra candle on the cake suggests another year of growth and maturity(成熟) – or so we hope. We all like to imagine that we are getting wiser and not just older. Most of us enjoy seeing the wonder of growth in others, as well. For instance, seeing our children develop and learn new things makes us feel proud. For Americans, like people in most cultures, growing up is a wonderful process. But growing old? That is a different story.
Growing old is not exactly pleasant for people in youth-oriented(以年轻人为中心) American culture. Most Americans like to look young, act young and feel young. As the old saying goes, “You’re as young as you feel.” Older people joke about how many years young they are, rather than how many years old. People in some countries value the aged as a source of experience and wisdom. But Americans seem to favor those that are young, or at least “young at heart”.
Many older Americans find the “golden years” to be anything but golden. Economically, “senior citizens” often struggle just to get by. Retirement at the age of 65 brings a sharp decrease in personal income. Social security benefits usually cannot make up the difference. Older people may suffer from poor nutrition, medical care and housing. Some even experience age discrimination. American sociologist Pat Moore once dressed up like an older person and wandered city streets. She was often treated rudely—even cheated and robbed. However, dressed as a young person, she received much more respect.
Unfortunately, the elderly population in America is increasing fast. Why? People are living longer. Fewer babies are being born. And middle- aged “baby boomers” are rapidly entering the group of the elderly. America may soon be a place where wrinkles(皱纹) are “in”. Marketing experts are ready noticing this growing group of consumer.
68. We can infer from the second paragraph that _______.
A. young people lack experience and wisdom
B. American older people often joke about their old age
C. American culture is very young
D. Different countries have different opinions on the old age.
69. What does the first sentence in the third paragraph mean?
A. The golden years can make the old earn lots of money and receive good medical care.
B. The old in America are leading a hard life without good nutrition, medical care or housing.
C. The old in America have to retire at the age of 65.
D. American social security benefits are not good.
70. What does the underlined word “in” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Serious. B. Cool. C. Disappearing slowly. D. Growing fast.
71. According to this passage, which of the following statement is correct?
A. The young are much more respected than the old in America.
B. The old are much more respected than the young in America.
C. Growing old makes people feel proud in America.
D. The young are often discriminated in America.

The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet(彗星) is heading towards the Earth: Most of it will miss our planet, but two pieces will probably hit the southern half of the Earth.
On 17 July, a piece four kilometres wide enters the Earth’s atmosphere with a massive explosion. About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in the sea bed. Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water, a kilometer high, rashes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometres an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned.
Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in Argentina. Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andes Mountains. The shock waves move north into California and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes. Millions of people in the southern half of the earth are already dead, but the north won’t escape for long. Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, temperatures around the world fall to almost zero. Crops are ruined. The sun won’t be seen again for many years. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later, no more than 10 million people remain alive.
Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. The dinosaurs were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a piece of object in space. The dinosaurs couldn’t live through the cold climate that followed and they died out. Will we meet the same end?
72. What is mainly described in the passage?
A. A historic discovery B. An event of imagination.
C. A research on space D. A scientific adventure.
73. When the first piece hits the South Atlantic, it causes _______.
A. an earthquake B. damages to cities
C. an Earth explosion D. huge waves
74. Why can’t the northern half of the earth escape for long?
A. Because the land is covered with water.
B. Because the light and heat from the sun can not reach the earth.
C. Because people there can not live at the temperature of zero.
D. Because wars break out among countries.
75. By giving the example of dinosaurs, the author tries to proves ______.
A. Animals could not live in the cold climate
B. What happened 65 million years ago was an invented story
C. The human being will die out in 2094
D. The Earth will be hit by other objects in space
