Beijing seeks to solve post-Games headache

China Daily — Huge investments go into the venue(体育比赛场馆) construction, which seem to be for nothing but the Games' half-month glory alone. Moreover, large sums of money are required for their maintenance following the Games.

This is a universal problem faced by all host cities. Moscow, Los Angeles, Seoul, Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney and Athens have all had the same headache. The only difference lies in the degrees of intensity. Beijing, the next host city, is bound to find the same problem once the 2008 Olympics conclude.

How can this be avoided? What can Beijing learn from its predecessors' experiences and lessons? Athens, the immediate predecessor, is doing something about it and may offer some useful ideas for the Chinese capital in this regard.

A company, the Greek Olympic Property SA, was founded in 2002 to handle venue affairs after the Athens Games. It began operating in 2004 and has been involved in the post-Olympic development and management of facilities, said Christos Hadjiemmanuil, president of the company, in an interview with a group of Chinese journalists last week in Athens.

The operation of the company is governed by market forces much like privately owned firms, although the Greek Olympic Properties SA and all the venues are owned by the state, according to Hadjiemmanuil.

The company oversees the management of 15 Olympic complexes (or 22 individual Olympic facilities) while the other two firms are in charge of the rest.

All 15 complexes have been put forward for international bids for their post-Olympic use. The first-phase bidding has been completed but the outcome has yet to be announced. The second phase will be conducted at the end of February and the third phase at the end of March, according to Hadjiemmanuil.

Fortunately, the venue construction contractors are currently responsible for the maintenance and management of the venues because the signed contracts stated that the contractors should bear the maintenance costs of the venues in a given period of time after the Games, he said.

56. From the passage, we can infer that ________.

A. the Olympic Games will take place in different cities in turns, such as Moscow, Los Angeles, etc.

B. Beijing will face many problems the 2008 Olympic Games will bring

C. the city that hosts Olympic Games often face a lot of problems after the Games

D. the Beijingers are good at learning its predecessors’ experience and lessons.

57. Which of the cities have better solved the post-game problems?

A. Moscow B. Beijing C. Athens D. Atlanta

58. Which is NOT true according to this passage?

A. The Greek Olympic Property SA was founded to solve the headache caused by the 28th Olympic Games.

B. Only the Greek Olympic Property SA is involved in the management of the Olympic facilities.

C. The Greek Olympic Property SA is governed by the Greek government, but it is operated according to market economy.

D. In a certain period of time after the 2004 Olympic Games, the Government of Athens will not see to the repairs of the facilities.

B

Sir,

The majority of your readers must have been surprised and shocked to read a letter from Mr. R. Hogg, published in last Wednesday’s Herald. Mr. Hogg seems to think that his own convenience and that of motorists in general are the only things that matter in our city.

I would have more sympathy with Mr. Hogg if he just made suggestions to improve the situation. No doubt his problems would be partly solved if the local government built a multi-storey car park in the city center, instead of encouraging motorists to use public transport. All the same, judging from the tone of Mr. Hogg’s letter, I suspect that motorists who are so careless of pedestrians’ safety that they would rather park their cars on the pavement than hold up the traffic would probably be too lazy to use a multi-storey car park if they had to walk a few hundred yards to their destination afterwards.

My main reason for writing, however, is much more important. Does Mr. Hogg realize that, according to figures issued by the Department of Transport, 13,000 people were knocked down in Britain last year because of cars being illegally parked either on the pavement or on crossings? In fact, although the total pedestrian casualty(伤亡事故)rate has fallen over the last ten years, there has been an increase in accidents caused when pedestrians have to step out into the road to avoid parked cars on the pavement and cannot see oncoming traffic.

I cannot share Mr. Hogg’s view that the government have paid little attention to “long-suffering motorists”; and I think the punishment for dangerous parking should be made severe enough to stop all motorists from breaking the law in this way.

A. WALKER,

Proudfoot Lane, Carchester

59. The letter above is written in answer to the letter by__________ .

A.an editor B.a certain Mr. R. Hogg C.some readers D.some motorists

60. The topic for the two letters is _________.

A.parking problems in the city center

B.building a multi-storey car park in the city center

C.public transport

D.the increase in accidents caused by parked cars on the pavement

61. What Mr. A. Walker does want to make known in his letter is that _______.

A.the total pedestrian casualty rate has fallen

B.careless parking may cause serious traffic accidents

C.the convenience of motorists in general matters much

D.the safety of pedestrians matters little

62. In Mr. A. Walker’s opinion, severer punishment should be given to

A.all the careless motorists. B.all the law breakers.

C.all who step out into the road. D.all who do dangerous parking.

Interview with God

I dreamed I had an interview with God. “So you would like to interview me?” God asked. “If you have the time,” I said. “My time is eternity(永恒的).” God smiled, “What questions do you have in mind for me?” “What surprises you most about humankind?” God answered, “That they get bored with childhood, they rush to grow up, and then long to be children again. That they lose their health to make money... and then lose their money to restore their health. That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present, such that they live in neither the present nor the future. That they live as if they will never die, and die as though they had never lived.”God’s hand took mine and we were silent for a while. And then I asked, “As a parent, what are some of life’s lessons you want your children to learn?” “To learn they cannot make anyone love them. All they can do is to let themselves be loved. To learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others. To learn to forgive by practicing forgiveness. To learn that it only takes a few seconds to open profound wounds in those they love, and it can take many years to heal them. To learn that a rich person is not one who has the most, but is one who needs the least. To learn that there are people who love them dearly, but simply have not yet learned how to express or show their feelings. To learn that two people can look at the same thing and see it differently. To learn that it is not enough that they forgive one another, but they must also forgive themselves.” “Thank you for your time,” I said humbly. “Is there anything else you would like your children to know?” God smiled and said; “Just know that I am here always.”

63. In answering how many questions did God give “me” his opinion?

A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.

64. To God’s eye, a rich man is one who _________.

A. lives a simple life B. is content with little

C. doesn’t want to be rich D. gives others a lot

65. Which of the following is best supported by the text?

A. God does exist in the world.

B. He who loves others is sure to be loved by others.

C. When one makes a mistake, he should try to find an excuse to forgive himself.

D. It is easier to lose a friend than to make a friend.

66. The author wrote the passage to _________.

A. invite people to believe in God

B. present people’s wrong attitudes to life and give advice on how to live happily

C. show what is important in life

D. give God’s opinions of humankind and lessons God wants us to learn

China has recently been faced with serious issues of product safety. In Paname, it is said that medicine made with a poisonous chemical sickened some people. A Chinese company had identified it as diethylene glycol, a low-cost substitute commonly used in automobile antifreeze(防冻剂).

Some countries have banned Chinese-made toothpaste containing diethylene glycol. China has now told companies to discontinue its use, even though it says the toothpaste is safe. Another industrial chemical, melamine, was found in wheat flour used to make pet food in North America. Thousands of dogs and cats became sick.

The United States has restricted some imports of Chinese seafood because they contained banned substance, And questions have been raised about other products, including children’s toys covered with lead paint.

Chinese officials promised to provide the European Union, the biggest trading partner, with detailed reports on enforcement efforts against unsafe goods.

China recently closed three companies linked to the Panama and the pet food scare. And it dismissed the former head of its food and drug administration. The Xinhua News Agency said it calls for stronger controls over producers, great responsibilities for government and more serious punishment for illegal activities.

But Chinese officials have accused some foreign media for overstating problems with goods made in China. They say food imports from the United States also fail inspection sometimes. Next week, American and Chinese food safety officials are planning to hold 5 days of meetings in Beijing to discuss cooperation.

Researchers have discovered that women in their 60s who eat more green leafy vegetables how less signs of mental decline over time, reported Wednesday’s CRI online.

They gave participants a bundle of tests measuring memory, oral ability and attention. The study didn’t include men, but researchers say a similar diet would likely have the same results.

Eating fish can cut risk of heart rhythm disorder

US scientists have found that eating fish can reduce the risk of deadly heartbeat disorders. They say baked fish can effectively reduce the risk of atria fibrillation(心房颤抖) among older men and women, reported Tuesday’s CRI online.

Researchers say in their 12 years of research among 4,800 people over the age of 65, they found those who ate fish one to four times per week had an about 30 percent lower risk compared with those who ate fish less than once a month. They say the omega-3 fatty acid can reduce the risk of a range of heart disorders and is vital to brain development and function.

US scientist have found that a mixture that makes red wine a healthy drink may also hold the secret to a longer life. They say antioxidant(抗氧化剂) in wine acted on fruited flies and worms in the same way as a method known to extend the life of many animals, which is by sharply limiting how much they eat.

Possible version:

Nowadays a lot of schools keep their students in school all day long. Students have different opinions about it.

Some of the students think they enjoy less freedom and have little chance to get in touch with society. They are not able to fully develop their interests and hobbies,. Therefore, they have less interest in their studies.

Some others think school is the best place to get knowledge so they should put their heart into their lessons. Some students lack the ability to control themselves. Once out of school, they may lose control of themselves and do something that will influence/affect their studies.

Personally, it is necessary to keep students at school. But at the same time schools should organize various activities so that students can enjoy their school life. (I don’t agree to keep students at school all day. Schools should offer students more free time to develop their personal interests
