Most students do an IQ text early in their school career. Even if they never see their results, they feel that their IQ is 31 determines how well they are going to do in life. When they see other students doing 32 (good) than them, they usually believe that those students have 33 higher IQ and 34 there is nothing they can do to change facts. However, new research 35 EQ suggests that success is not simply result of a high IQ.

While your IQ tells you how 36 (intelligence) you are, your EQ tells you how well you use your intelligence. Professor Salovery, 37 invented the term EQ, 38 (give) the following description: At work, it is IQ that gets you 39 (promote). Supported by his academic research, Professor Salovery suggests that when predicting someone’s future success, their character, 40 measured by EQ tests, might actually matter more than their IQ.

Three surfers rushed to save a man’s life after he was left drifting on a notorious stretch of water.

The men stayed with Greg Popple for 30 minutes and had to be rescued themselves by helicopter as the drama unfolded.

The 45-year-old had floated out on a body board near Hutchwns Point at 8:30 am. He found himself in trouble about half-a-mile from the shore and dangerously close to rocks. Surfers Graig Evans, 31, Robert Miles, 19, and Owain Daviees, 23, were risking their own safety to keep him floating for 30 minutes. Luckily a passer-by noticed what was going on and raised the alarm. Porthcawl Coastguard, Porthcaw Lifeboat and an RAF helicopter all took part in the rescue.

“The man who got into trouble was a body boarder-there was a big tide where he was,” said Joe Missen. “Three other surfers spotted he was in difficulty and he was going down. They kept him afloat because he was in a state of shock and out of energy. If Mr. Popple was closer to the rocks, it could have been a lot worse, but they managed to keep him from harm”.

Mr. Missen’s mum Alison, also part of the rescue team, said, “That part of the water is notorious for taking people out to nowhere”.

The three men had clocked off a night shift at Ford Motor Company shortly before the incident.

“I headed straight down to the beach for a surf, when I saw him flailing(挥动). We just swam straight out to him and kept him calm while the help came”.

The four men were taken to the life boat house to recover, without injuries.

One day last September, as Britney Spears was about to board a flight to Los Angeles from London, a blue bottle fell out of her purse. She quickly put it back in, but not before the camera recorded the event. Neither Spears nor her spokesman was willing to comment on the contents of the bottle, but the next morning London’s Daily Express published a page of pictures under the headline “EXCLUSIVE: POP PRINCESS SPOTTED AT AIRPORT WITH POT OF SLIMMING TABLETS.” Spears was apparently carrying Zantrex-3, one of the most popular weight-loss pills now sold in the United States. The pill, which is sold at about fifty dollars for a month’s supply, contains a huge amount of caffeine, some green tea, and three common South American herbs that also act as stimulants (兴奋剂). It hit the U.S. market last March and has had a success that would be hard to overstate. Millions of bottles have been sold, and during the Christmas season it was displayed in the windows of the nation’s largest chain of vitamin shops, G.N.C. (It is so highly sought after that many of the stores keep it in locked counters.) Zantrex-3 is also sold at CVS, Rite Aid, Wal-Mart, and other chains, and over the telephone and on the Internet. If you type “Zantrex” into Google, more than a hundred thousand pieces of information about it will appear. At any moment, there are scores of people sell it on eBay.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the success story of Zantrex-3, however, is that it is far from unique. There are hundreds of similar products on the market today, and they are bought by millions of Americans. And though Zantrex’s producer makes some exciting statements (“the most advanced weight control compound (化合物)period”), so do the people who sell Stacker 2 and Anorex along with those who sell Carb Eliminator and Fat Eliminator. Almost all of these compounds suggest that they can help people lose weight and regain lost energy, and often without diet, exercise, or any other effort.

46. Britney Spears is a / an______.

A. dancer B. singer C. athlete D. chemist

47. Which of the following is also a kind of weight-loss pill?

A. CVS B. Rite Aid C. Wal-Mart D. Anorex

48. The underlined part of the sentence in the first paragraph is most likely similar in meaning to ______.

A. it is difficult to say how successful Zantrex-3 is

B. you can’t overstate the success of Zantrex-3

C. you can’t think too highly of the success of Zantrex-3

D. Zantrex-3 is not very successful

49. From the second paragraph we know that ______ .

A. Zantrex-3 is one of the successful weight-loss pills on the US market

B. Zantrex-3 is the most successful weight-loss pills on the US market

C. Zantrex-3 is the only weight-loss pill on the US market

D. there are five kinds of weight-loss pills on the US market

50. The text mainly tells us ______.

A. when Britney Spears was found taking weight-loss pills with her

B. how Zantrex-3 became successful in the USA

C. weight-loss pills are very popular in the USA

D. Zantrex-3 is forbidden to be sold on the US market

C

Burn rate is the speed at which a startup business consumes money. My rate was $75,000 a month. Four months after my company was set up, I had only a quarter of the starting capital left in the bank.

Looking for guidance, I went to talk to my friend, Arthur Walworth about my new venture.

“Times of great change always bring out the risk-takers,” he said. “And they leave winners and losers. My grandfather invested a lot of money in a project of Thomas Edison’s that ended up in failure.”

I was lost in thought at the notion of a Thomas Edison’s project ending in failure. Damn. It could happen to anybody! I must continue.

At that time CD-ROM sales had bombed, so investors were fleeing from the field. I didn’t turn away from mine entirely, but instead linked it to the Internet.

My plan was to offer consumers descriptions of home-design products by using a special software and let them modify the designs. Then we can enable them to get online professional and constructional help to have their houses built, decorated and furnished according to their own choice.

To realize my plan I needed investors, so I continued to meet regularly with venture capitalists. One said I had a great idea. But I needed to test it. Get the money somewhere. To get this money from a VC is going to cost my wife and my children! He turned down my request.

Wife? Children? I barely remembered them.

I was working nonstop—struggling to turn the key in the lock, to find the right way ahead.

The pressure was terrible. It was just at this time that my parents and sisters stepped up. Two hundred thousand dollars. A lot of money to them, invested in this crazy son and brother without a moment’s hesitation. Dad and Mom had driven out from Chicago and seen the passion in my little office and the trouble at home.

With their help my company survived and has been prospering ever since.

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

I have never learned as much math in my life as I did last year. It was because of Ms Vacirca that I truly understood what I was learning. It might not seem like a big deal to some, but to me it is.

I never really wanted to work for good grades in math class. I never knew how to study math and never understood some of the concepts. I can remember trying to sneak out of the classroom before Ms Vacirea caught me and yelled across the classroom, “Lauren, are you coming to extra help during lunch?” It was a nightmare—she would always catch me with one foot out of the door, it never failed. Even then I just thought of it as a thing I HAD to do. It was funny to see how everyone would be in her room during lunch and then again after school. She would encourage everyone to come every day, just so we could do our homework in peace.

Many of the students thought of her as a bit of nag(有点唠叨), but inside they knew that she was right and respected for it. Many of her tests were hard at first, but as the year progressed so did I. I knew that it was because of her.

Even outside class, she was caring as ever. She always wanted to know what was going on in my (and everyone else’s) life, and she was always looking out for everyone’s best interest.

Ms. Vacirca is a sweet woman with a sense of humor that you just have to laugh at. When regents were approaching, she was more concerned than ever about everyone doing well. Many of her precious students scored high, and so she expected the same from us. Day after day there were students in the classroom reviewing problems. When it was time for our big test, I knew I was ready. I walked out of that test with my head high. I knew that I was a success and Ms. Vacirca had made me that way. I appreciated all the hard work that she put into helping me and my fellow students. I knew that I would miss her.

[写作内容]

1. 以约30个词概括作者记忆中的Ms. Vacirca 是一个怎样的老师;

2. 以约为120词就“教师节和尊敬教师”这个主题写一篇短文,并包括如下要点:

a. 向老师表达节日祝贺;

b. 从一件小事往返忆老师的教诲和无私奉献;

c. 我将如何回报老师的关爱。

[写作要求]

1. 作文中可使用自己的亲身经历或虚构的故事,也可以参照阅读材料的内容但不得直接引用原文中的句子;

2. 文中不能出现真实姓名和学校名称。

[评分标准]

概括准确,语言规范,内容合适,篇章连贯。

基础写作

Dear Sir or Madam,

I’m writing for more information about the day tour to London. As a student at Oxford University, I’d like to know if you have any special price for students. As for the money you charge, does it cover the entrance fees for visiting the places listed and lunch? Since I need to prepare my lessons for the next day, I’d like to know the time to return. Besides, is there any time for shopping? I really want to have a look at the big stores in London.

Yours,

Li Hua

读写任务

One possible version:

Ms Vacirca, a caring, determined, humorous math teacher, though with a bit nag, was very strict with her students but respected and loved by all of them. All her students, especially the author, learned much and progressed rapidly owing to her hard work and concern.

Teaching is the most glorious and respectable career. On teacher’s Day, I’d like to express my innermost appreciation and gratefulness to all the teachers in the world!

I still remember how my teachers pulled me through a critical moment. I did a bad job in the first mock test and I was considerably depressed. Then my teachers came to my rescue. Patiently, my English teacher analyzed the paper word by word and encouraged me to carry on. My chemistry teacher also gave me a precious gift. He told me not to be obsessed with the test results and encouraged me to find fun in learning. Their help will enable me to survive the competition and surely benefit me in the future.

Perhaps I’ll never have a chance to repay all that I have received from my teachers. But I’ll try to be a useful person and become their pride.
