But the phrase was an immediate winner in the language. Simpson was found not guilty of the murders in a criminal trial but held liable the deaths in a civil proceeding
In third place was a series of emotion symbols used in E-mail and text messages: "# - )" which Payack said meant "wasted." In fourth was "Airline Pulp," a Chinese-English combined way of describing food served aboard an airliner.

A new study has found that all women need to lower their stress levels is a strong and happy marriage. A team of researchers led by James A.Coan, a University of Virginia neuroscientist (神经学家) has found that women under threat who hold their husbands' hands show signs of immediate relief, which can clearly be seen on their brain scans.
Coan, an assistant professor in the U.VA.Neuroscience Graduate Program and the Department of Psychology, and his team conducted a study involving several couples who rated themselves as highly satisfied with their marriages.
The researchers designed a functional MRI (magnetic resonance imaging磁共振成像) study in which 16 married women were subjected to the threat of a very mild electric shock while they by turns held their husband's hand, the hand of a stranger (male) or no hand at all.
They found that the MRI was able to show how these women's brains responded to this handholding while in a threatening situation. The researchers noted a large decrease in the brain response to threat as a function of partner handholding, and a limited decrease in this response as a function of stranger handholding.
Moreover, partner handholding effects varied as a function of marital quality, with women in the very highest quality marriages benefiting from a very powerful decrease in threat-related brain activity. "This is the first study of the neurological reactions to human touch in a threatening situation." said Dr. Coan.
64.The study shows that _____ can be the best way to lessen stress for women.
A.high-quality marriages B.holding their husband’s hand
C.getting married D.being strong and happy

C.the more eager you’ll be to get married.
D.the less reliable husband you’ll have.

About 90 per cent of Chinese believe the polarization (分化) between the rich and poor is "serious" in China, according to a survey conducted by China Youth Daily. And more than 80 per cent of the respondents (对象) surveyed said something must be done to narrow the expanding gap between the rich and poor, while 14.1 per cent said it was unnecessary.
The polarization has aroused wide concern among the public in recent years. The State Development and Reform Commission (国家发改委) said the Gini Coefficient had reached 0.47 for China, up from 0.29 two decades ago. Usually, a country with a number above 0.4 is warned to pay more attention to the income inequality problem.
To find out the people's view, the survey covered 10,250 respondents, between the ages of 20 and 30 with a college education and a monthly salary between 1,000 and 3,000 yuan. Surprisingly, most disagreed with the view of experts who claim the urban-rural difference is causing the widening gap. More than 70 per cent of the respondents believed that "the group of special interests" is the prime reason for the polarization. Followed by "people in power" 68 per cent, and "bosses" 50 per cent.
Another unexpected finding almost all agreed that a good educational background and knowledge were not the decisive factors in gaining wealth. About 95 per cent said rich people are not necessarily those who are able to speak English or have a college education.
Today in China, rich people, accounting for 10 per cent of the population, control 45 per cent of the total social fortune, and poor people, also 10 per cent of the population, only control 1.5 per cent, according to an investigation published by the National Bureau of Statistics last June.
68.It can be inferred that the Gini Coefficient (in paragraph 2 ) would probably be _____.
A.a unit used in advanced mathematics
B.the degree of a country’s development
C.the level of the citizen’s living standard
D.a measure of income inequality
69.Experts hold the view that the main reason for the polarization is _____.
A.the urban- rural difference
B.the group of special interests
C.the people in power
D.the bosses
70.Which statement is correct according to the text?
A.The total social fortune of the rich is more than that of the other population
B.Not all respondents surveyed thought it necessary to close the gas between the rich and
poor.
C.The respondents surveyed have the same view as the experts.
D.Those who can speak English and have a college education can easily become rich.
71.Which of the following can show the correct proportion of the social fortune among population?
(E)
It's hardly surprising that weather is a favourite topic for so many people around the world - it affects where we choose to live, what we wear, our moods, and perhaps even our national characteristics. Studies have shown that changeable weather can make it difficult to concentrate, cloudy skies slow down reaction, and high humidity with hot, dry winds makes many people bad-tempered.
If you live in a place like Britain, where the weather seems to change daily if not hourly, you could be forgiven for thinking that the weather is random. In fact the weather is controlled by systems which move around areas of the globe. In the UK the weather depends on depressions, often called ‘lows’, and anticyclones, also known as ‘highs’. These systems start in the Atlantic Ocean, and make their way across the British Isles from the west to the east. Highs bring sunny weather, while lows bring rain and wind. In modern times, human activity seems to be altering weather patterns. Gases produced by heavy industry change the temperature of the Earth’s surface, and affect cloud formation. Some researchers say that factories in Europe and North America may have been one of the causes of the droughts in Africa in the 1980s.
The human race has always tried to guess the weather, especially in areas of the world where there are frequent changes. Traditional rhymes point to early attempts to identify weather patterns, popular poems include:
Red sky at night, shepherds’ delight; Red sky in the morning, shepherds’ warning.
Flies will swarm before a storm.
Rain before 7, clear by 11.
While folk wisdom can still provide a guide to help forecast weather, today’s methods of prediction increasingly rely on technology. Satellites, balloons, ships, aircraft and weather centres with sensitive monitoring equipment, send data to computers. The data is then processed, and the weather predicted. However, even this system cannot predict weather for longer than about a week.
72.When the weather keeps changing, _____.
A.people become bad-tempered
B.people’s reaction slow down
C.people find it hard to focus on their work
D.people become hungrier
73.Which of the following questions could have the answer in the second paragraph?
A.What causes changes in the weather?
B.What’s the weather like in Britain?
C.Who should be responsible to the droughts in Africa in the 1980s?
D.Why is the weather in the UK changeable?
74.According to a traditional rhyme, if there is a red sky at night, the next day will be _____.
A.windy B.rainy C.fine D.snowy
75.Which of the following statements is true?
A.Anticyclones often bring rain and wind.
B.Weather forecasting has been done for a long time.
C.The weather in Britain is random.
D.Modern methods of weather prediction are developed from folk wisdom.

(A)
60.B。 综合文中提供的相关信息可知,Herm是small and quiet; The Isle of Man是Thirty miles long; The Isle of Wight是24 miles across;Jersey 是only ten miles long。最大的岛屿应为 “the Isle of Man”。
61.C。 由文中the Island of Wight “has the best sunshine record in Britain” 可知。
62.C。 由文中第一段: “…particularly in Jersey’s St. Heller, are concentrated the amusements of really big resorts.”
63.D。 由Channel Islands一段“…the weather is far better than in England ” 可知:天气好是与其它地方不同的D。
(C)
根据第一段“…changeable weather can make it difficult to concentrate”意义,concentrate可用focus on their work代替。
73.A。 此段讲述的是影响天气变化的两个主要因素:一个是受环地球四周的大气系统所控制(controlled by systems which move around areas of the globe),另一个是受人类活动的影响(human activity seems to be altering weather patterns),因此,A项正确。
74.C。 Red sky at night, shepherds’ delight; Red sky in the morning, shepherds’ warning可知:晚上天红,牧羊犬兴奋;早上天红,牧羊犬警鸣。
由短文“Traditional rhymes point to early attempts to identify weather patterns”一句可知,人们很久以前就进行天气猜测了。
76.去掉to。
77.stood之后加up。
78.had之前加that。此句是it is…that…
80.as改为like。
81.正确。
82.which改为where。
83.away改为into。
84.去掉was。
85.what 改为that 或去掉what。
Making a Better Decision
Now many students are faced with problems like deciding whether to focus on science or art. Not taking the child’s interest or preferences into account, some parents force their child to make the choice as their will, which troubles many students.
Throughout our lives we are going to have to make many choices. As students we should talk to our parents or teachers especially on life-changing decisions. But when it comes down to it, we are the ones who must live with our choices. On the other hand, the parents should try to help children make the best possible decisions, instead of forcing them to do something against their will.
It depends on students themselves whether they’ll be science students or art students. Just let their hearts show them the way.

M: You can travel by bus. It’s very cheap.

W: Thank you very much. Well, I must be off now, See you when I get back.
M: Good luck and have a good trip.

W: The black one.
M: Oh. It's only $ 40.95.
W: Huh? That’s too expensive for me. Do you have a cheaper one?
M: Hmm. How about this brown leather one?
W: Umm... I don’t think my father will like the design on the outside, and it doesn’t have a place to put pictures. How much is it anyway?
M: It’s $ 25.99.
W: Hmm. I don’t have to spend that much money.
M: Okay. How much do you have to spend?
W: I’m not sure. Probably about ten dollars or so. I’ve been helping my mom around the house for the past week to earn some money. This is all I have.
M: Hmm. How about this tie?
W: That’s real pretty, but the price tag says $13.99, and I know I don’t have that much.
M: Well, let’s just say the tie just went on sale. How about $ 5.00? What do you say?
W: Oh, thanks, I’ll take it.
Text 10
Good morning, everyone. Today I’d like to give a lecture on cycling tours. Well, for anyone who is considering going on a tour, the first thing to consider is safety. So it’s very important indeed to consider what you wear. Wear something that can easily be seen, red jackets, for example. You know many accidents happen because drivers simply fail to see the cyclists.
Second, don’t try to ride too far, too quickly. Take your time, and if you feel tired, stop and rest. Remember the joy of cycling tours is the riding itself. Get close to nature and see things you wouldn’t normally see if you were traveling by car or bus.
And if you’re planning your journey in the summer, take plenty of water. You are advised to drink at least one liter of water every hour. If the weather is not very warm, make sure you take some warm clothes. And put them on when you stop riding. Even in cold weather you can become very warm when you are riding and then it is very easy to catch a cold or even get a fever when you stop.
