The people who built Stonehenge in southern England thousands of years ago had wild parties, eating barbecued pigs and breaking pottery. This is according to recent work by archaeologists—history experts who investigate how human beings lived in the past.
Archaeologists digging near Stonehenge last year discovered the remains of a large prehistoric village where they think the builders of the mysterious stone circle used to live. The village is about 4,600 years old, the same age as Stonehenge and as old as the pyramids in Egypt. It is less than two miles from the famous ancient landmark and lies inside a massive man-made circular dirt wall, or "henge", known as the Durrington Walls.
Remains found at the site included jewellry, stone arrowheads, tools made of deer antlers, wooden spears and huge amounts of animal bones and broken pottery'. "These finds suggest Stone Age people went to the village at special times of the year to feast and party", says Mike Parker-Pearson from Sheffield University in England.
He said many of the pig bones they found had been thrown away half-eaten. He also said the partygoers appeared to have shot some of the farm pigs with arrows, possibly as a kind of sport before barbecuing them.
An ancient road which led from the village to the River Avon was also found. Here, the experts think, people came 'after their parties to throw dead relatives in the water so the bodies would be washed downstream to Stonehenge.
Parker-Pearson believes Stonehenge was like a cemetery where ancient Britons buried the dead and remembered their ancestors. "The theory is that Stonehenge is a kind of spirit home to the ancestors."
The recent discovery of the village within the Durrington Walls shows that Stonehenge didn't stand alone but was part of a much bigger religious site, according to Parker-Pearson.
People still come to worship and celebrate at Stonehenge today. They meet there when the sun sets on the shortest day of winter and when it rises on the longest day of summer. But the days of' barbecuing whole pigs there and throwing family members into the river are a thing of the past.

As Mrs. Thompson stood in front of her 5a grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children a lie. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same.
But that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs. Thompson noticed that he didn't play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. And Teddy could be unpleasant. It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X's and then putting a big "F" at the top of his papers.
However, when she reviewed his file, she got a surprise.
Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners.., he is a joy to be around."
His second grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle."
His third grade teacher wrote, "His mother's death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best but his father doesn't show much interest and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren't taken."
Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class."
Now, Mrs. Thompson was ashamed of herself and felt worse when her students brought her beautifully wrapped Christmas presents. Teddy's present, however, was clumsily wrapped in rough brown grocery paper. Taking her time she opened it to reveal Teddy's gifts, a rhinestone bracelet with stones missing and a quarter full perfume bottle. How the children laughed! "What a pretty bracelet! Mm, lovely perfume! Perfect on my wrist." The children were silent.
Alone together, after school, Teddy told Mrs. Thompson, "Today you smelled just like my Mom used to..." His teacher cried all night and, from that day, she stopped teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic and began to teach children instead.

Research shows that humans switch from selfish to unselfish behaviour when they are watched. Do you?
A picture of a set of eyes on a computer screen can cause a change in the way people act. Even images of eyes on a charity donation, collection box encourage people to be unselfish, because people put more money in a collection box that has a picture of eyes on it than they do when a flower symbol is on the box.
Manfred Milinski from the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Germany and Bettina Rockenbach of the University of Berlin, the authors of a new study, found that people act better when they are being watched because they feel they will be rewarded for good behaviour. Their report also referred to other research showing that this response of behaving well when watched is somehow coded into humans and people respond this way unconsciously, or without realising it.
It is not just humans that act unselfishly when they are being watched. A fish called the grooming fish cleans other fish. When other fish are around, it is gentler. When no other fish are around, however, the grooming fish bites chunks from the fish it is supposed to be cleaning.
The researchers suggest that the best way to get people to behave in the correct way is to make them feel watched. This could be the reason for the success of a famous American army poster. On it was a picture of anelderly man staring fiercely and pointing, it appeared, to the person who was looking at the poster. Under the picture was the caption 'I Want You' It encouraged hundreds of thousands of young American men to join the army during the Second World War to fight the Germans and Japanese.
66.According to the report, why does a person behave better when he feels he is being watched?

69.According to the text, which of the following statements is true?
A.People pretend to behave better when they are watched.
B.Fish bite other fish in a fish tank when they are alone.
C.People donate more money when they feel they are watched.
D.Soldiers fought better during World War II because of a poster.
70.Where would the study described in the text most likely be found?
A.In a newspaper. B.In a scientific journal.
C.In an advertising magazine. D.In a science textbook.

Biotechnology is the use of biological systems — living things — to make or change products. It has been used for centuries in traditional activities like baking bread and making cheese.
Traditional biotechnology involved for example, developing a new wheat variety with early ripening characteristics by cross-breeding different types of wheat until the desired characteristics and only those characteristics were present in the new wheat variety.
The terms 'gene technology', 'genetic engineering' and 'genetic modification' mean the same thing, and refer to one type of modern biotechnology.
Since the 1940s scientists have known that DNA — deoxyribonucleic acid (脱氧核糖核酸)— in the cells of all living things is like a blueprint that is passed from one generation to another.
Genes are made of DNA. They contain coded instructions for proteins, which give living things their particular characteristics like hair and eye colour. All living organisms use DNA as the genetic code.
Gene technology includes a range of techniques to copy genes and modify them so that they will work in a new host either to produce or reduce a product. It also involves transfer of the reconstructed gene to a new host.
Using gene technology, scientists aim to introduce, add or delete particular characteristics of a living thing, depending on whether they are considered desirable or undesirable.
As you go further into this website, you can read more about gene technology — its history, how it’s done, its possible uses, the regulatory processes in place for gene technology, the debate surrounding gene technology and how this technology might affect you.

阅读下面的短文,并根据文章后的要求答题。(请注重问题后的词数要求)
You already recycle and shut off the water when you’re brushing your teeth. What more can the average person do to give the environment a boost? Buy green products.
It’s not just a trend any more-but that doesn’t mean that “going green” should keep you from your own style. In fact as people become more environmentally conscious, turning your own style green is easier. Looking out for the environment when you’re shopping for your personal needs makes you look good and feel good. And it should, because you can improve the environment in a variety of ways.
What’s Good for the Earth is Good for You
There are obvious benefits to seeking out environmentally friendly goods. They’re made with natural materials like organic cotton, bamboo, soy, or recycled plastics. They might save precious resources by using a natural resource in place of the typical or more readily available source, like using recycled plastic instead of leather for a handbag.
Fewer chemicals are used to make these products-and even if chemicals are used they are most likely recycled in order to cut down on waste. Handmade products are in abundance, and many times they’re made according to the fair trade standards. Some companies run all their manufacturing equipment on wind or solar power. Guilt-free production for guilt-free shopping! Moreover, people who are allergic(过敏)to processed materials, like manufactured cotton or synthetic dyes, can rely on green goods to be gentler towards their sensitivities.
Renewable Goods, Endless Benefits
Really, the benefits to buying green can’t be listed conclusively. That’s because all people are bound to find something that’s great about it. It could be organic materials that don’t irritate your sensitive skin or the breathable and antimicrobial nature of bamboo socks that keep you feet dry and odor free. , when you buy green you’re making the world better for others, not just you. Shopping just became a lot less materialistic.
76.What does the passage mainly tell about ?(Please answer within 10 words.)
77.Which sentence in the passage can best explain the following one ?
Manufacturers should make green products responsibly and consumers should buy green products responsibly
78.What are the benefits of using green products? (Please answer within 30 words.)
79.Fill in the blank in the last paragraph with proper words or phrases to complete the sentence. (Please answer within 10 words.)

第二节:写作(满分30分)
The First Day in the Winter Holiday
It was the first day of the winter holiday, but XiaoMing wasn’t happy. In the morning, his mother woke him up early and wanted to take him to a make-up school. At almost the same time, his father came in, telling him to sign up for an English training course. XiaoMing was a football fan and was crazy about cartoon films, yet neither of his parents would like him to develop his own interest. What they only care about seems to be his study.
It’s not only XiaoMing who has to face such a holiday. Nowadays, children in China are burdened with so much homework and so many training courses that they can hardly enjoy their holidays. It’s time that parents “returned” holidays to their children.

W:I think you’d like Auckland. That’s the biggest city. And the capital Wellington’s nice too. Then you’d try to see as much of the countryside as possible.

W:Yes. It’s a small country, but there are mountains, beaches, lakes and everything. You can even go skiing on the South Island if you want to.
M:Really? And are hotels expensive?
W:The big ones are, but you can stay in smaller ones. They’re quite cheap. You can find them for around $30 a day, I guess.
M:That’s not too bad. And do you think ten days would be long enough to spend there?
W:Oh, yes, you can see plenty in ten days.

W:India? But I’ve lived there. I was there for two years.
M:How about Brazil?
W:Brazil? No, I’ve worked there.
M:Well, would you consider the Middle East?
W:Certainly not. I’ve worked there, too. I spent three years there.
M:Well, there’s China. Perhaps.
W:No, not China. I’ve been in China.
M:It’s a big country.
W:Yes, and I’ve lived there for a long time. Can’t you find any other country?
M:Well, there’s an island in the Pacific.
W:Island? Which island? I’ve lived there.
M:But, Mrs Smith, there are thousands of islands, as we all know.
W:Well, I’ve seen them all. Really, can’t you let me go to a different country from those you’ve mentioned?
(Text 8)
W:Tom, do you have a minute?
M:Oh, hi, Cathy. Sure, What’s up?
W:Well, I’ve been meaning to talk to you about the situation in the office.
M:I’m not in there very often. It’s so noisy that I can’t work.
W:That’s exactly what I’m getting at. We’re supposed to be able to do our preparation in that office, but have you noticed? Jack constantly had students coming in to get help with his course.
M:We can’t really ask him to stop having students come in for help.
W:No, of course not. but I’m not able to do my work and neither are you. I imagine it’s the same for the others in the office.
M:Hmmm, could we ask for a kind of meeting room? When we have to talk to students, we could go to the meeting room.
W:Good idea.
(Text 9)
M:Hello everybody. Today’s activities start at 10 o’clock. All the new students will gather in the Main Hall to meet the head of the school and the rest of the staff. The head will give us a welcoming speech and then the Director of Studies will talk about the courses and their requirements.
W:What do we do after that?
M:Let me finish, the Student Advisor will tell you about the various services and activities we offer to students . Any questions?
W:So, all of this is in the Main Hall?
M:That’s right. And then you’ll go next door to Classroom 5 at 11 o’clock.
W:What happens there?
M:You’ll have a test.
W:Test? I don’t like the sound of that. What sort of test?
M:Oh, it’s nothing to worry about. It’s just an English test to help us find your level of English so that we can put you in the right class. It won’t last long.

Now, back to the news. A tour bus carrying high school children from Boston ran off a highway exit on Friday morning, killing four children and injuring more than 30 people.
42 music students, aged 10 to 13, from Oak Hill High School in Boston, five teachers and two bus drivers were on the overnight trip to Canada. They were to take part in a band concert.
Andrew, a 12-year-old boy who was on the bus, said that all the children were asleep at the time of the accident. The cause of the crash has yet to be determined. Police said the bus went down a hill and landed on its side. Two girls and two boys were killed and several other people were thrown from the bus. Thirty-six people were treated at hospitals but most are now out of danger.
The school remained open on Friday. School officials were sent to the homes of the four who died. The children are very upset. Many are walking around corridors crying and hugging each other.
