The first time I saw Carlos 1 would never have believed he was going to change my life. I had

my arms full of books and I was tearing into the classroom when I ran into something solid. It was

Carlos.

“My, you’re tall,” he said.

Of course, the class began to laugh. Angry, I walked to my seat without a word.

I glanced back to see if Reed Harrington was laughing with the rest. That would be the last straw. But Reed was studying chemistry and did not seem to be aware of anything else. I didn't know why I considered Reed my friend. Maybe just because he was a good two inches taller than I. Anyway, every time I blew out my birthday candles and made a wish, it was for a date with Reed Harrington.

“Take that seat,” Mr. McCarthy told the cocky newcomer Carlos, pointing to the only empty one, in the back of the room.

Carlos grinned. “But I need a couple of dictionaries.” Again the class laughed, but now they were laughing with Carlos, not at him. He had been here only 10 minutes and already he had them on his side.

It was the school elections that made me think of Carlos again. Reed Harrington was voted president and Carlos vice-president. “How come?” I kept asking myself. “How come this shrimp who's only been in town for a little over a month gets to be so popular?”

So on that morning, I stopped Carlos and said, “It doesn't seem to bother you—being short.” He looked up at me. “Of course I mind being short. But there isn't anything I can do about it. When I realized I was going to have to spend my life in this undersized skin, I just decided to make the best of it and concentrate on being myself.” “You seem to get along great,” I admitted. “But what about me? Nobody wants to date a girl taller than he is.” “The trouble with you is you're afraid to be yourself. You're smart. And you could be pretty. In fact, you might be more than pretty.” I felt myself turning red….

Cloning is suggested as a means of bringing back a relative, usually a child, killed unfortunately. Some parents can understand that wish, but it must first be recognized that the copy would be a new baby and not the lost child. Here lies the difficulty, for the sad parents are seeking not a new baby but a return of the dead one.Since the original would be fondly remembered as having particular talents and interests, would not the parents expect the copy to be the same? It is possible, however, that the copy would develop quite differently. Is it fair to the new child to be placed in a family with such unnatural expectations?

Copying is also suggested as a means by which parents can have the child of their dreams. Couples might choose to have a copy of a film star, baseball player or scientist, depending on their interests. But because personality is only partly the result of genetic inheritance, conflicts would be sure to arise if the cloned child failed to develop the same interests as the original. What if the copy of Einstein shows no interest in science? Or the baseball player turns to acting'? Success also depends on fortune. What if the child does not live up to the hopes and dreams of their parents simply because of bad luck?

Every child should be wanted for itself, as a person. In making a copy of oneself or some famous person, a parent is purposely specifying the way he or she wishes that child to develop. In recent years, particularly in the U.S., much importance has been placed on the right of individuals to reproduce in ways that they wish.So I suggest there should be a greater need to consider the interests of the child and to reject these suggested uses of cloning.

60. The underlined part “The difficulty" in Paragraph 1 refers to ________.

A. cloning a baby is difficult

B. it's difficult to give birth to a new baby

C. the dead child can't come back again .

D. the cloned baby can't replace the lost child

【解析】(D) 克隆小孩的困难在于“克隆小孩代替不了死去的小孩’’。

61. According to the passage, one of the reasons why couples usually decide to clone babies is _______.

A. to bring back a child killed unfortunately

B. to exchange their children

C. to develop the same interests as their child

D. to succeed in making fortune

【解析】(A) 夫妻克隆小孩的原因有两个:“bringing back a relative, usually a child, killed unfortunately"

和“have the child of their dreams”。

62. The sentence“Success also depends on fortune" implies that _______.

A. the result may be unpredictable

B. the child does not live up to the parents’hopes

C. the cloned child fails to develop the same interest as the original

D. the baseball player turns to acting

【解析】(A)成功还要靠运气,暗示着结果不可预知。

63. We CAN’T conclude that _______ according to the observation made by the author.

A. it's important to consider the interests of the child rather than the suggested uses of cloning

B. parents can't expect to get the lost child back by cloning a new baby

C. much importance should be placed on the right of parents to reproduce babies in ways that they wish

D. every child should be wanted as a unique individual

【解析】(C) 最后一段“much importance has been placed on the right of individuals to reproduce in ways

that they wish”。

C

KIDS in a Sudanese refugee camp raise a cloud of dust as they kick around a football. NBA superstar Tracy Mc Grady watches from a distance before offering to buy the kids a grass pitch for $1,000.

Perhaps he sees a Ronaldinho rising up out of the African soil. Or maybe he just wants to do something—anything—to give these children some hope. But he is told, politely, that grass is not what the kids need.

Mc Grady, 29, writes on his website that he traveled to Africa because he was tired of only reading about it in the news. “Who are the faces behind the statistics?" he said. “I need to see it for myself.” And he did. He stepped out of his beautiful house and flew to a place torn to bits by war and famine(饥荒). He slept in a tent. He talked with people who had been suffered. And he swallowed his pride.

But no one should blame Mc Grady for wanting to buy the kids a patch of grass. Sport gave him a chance, so perhaps he thought it would do the same for the refugees.

Mc Grady was eyed by NBA scouts as a teenager and he didn't bother going to college. Instead, he leaped right into the NBAH. Since that move, basketball has given him a handsome living, but one very far removed from the lives of ordinary people. As Mc Grady would learn in Africa, most people sec sport as just a break from life's difficulties. They don’t mistake it for life itself. Only Mc Grady knows how the trip to Africa changed him, but I'd bet that, at the very least, it has given him a new sense for what is truly meaningful.

Mc Grady doesn't own an NBA championship ring. He hasn't risen to the heights of Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan. But, perhaps, now he knows he doesn't have to in order to truly make a difference in the world.

64. The refugee children probably need _______ most.

A. clean drinking water B. a grass football pitch

C. necessities of survival D. a tent to sleep in

【解析】(C) 文章第2段告诉读者一块地球场不是“what the kids need”,联系文章关于非洲难民的描述,我们不难得出如下结论:如何生存下去才是非洲儿童目前所最急需解决的问题。

65. What can we know about Mc Grady from the passage?

A. Basketball made him what he is today.

B. He is an NBA superstar as great as Kobe or Jordan.

C. He didn’t show his talent for basketball as a teenager.

D.He taught children to play football in a refugee camp.

【解析】(A) 作为一个少年就被NBA scouts发掘,篮球给了他机会和a handsome living,篮球也就是他生活的中心。所以是篮球使他有了今天。所以A正确。

66. What does the underlined part“scouts”in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

A. Workers. B. Strangers. C. Doctors. D. Hunters.

【解析】(D) “scouts”是“星探”的意思。

67. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Mc Grady wanted to buy kids a grass pitch because he spotted a football genius among them.

B. Mc Grady left his comfortable life behind to visit Africa because he wanted to meet face to face with the people.

C. Mc Grady was blamed for ignoring the kids’ real needs by offering something unnecessary.

D. Mc Grady’s future aim will be nothing but compete for an NBA Championship ring.

【解析】(B) Mc Grady “stepped out of his mansion and flew to a place literally torn to bits by war and famine”, 到饱受战乱和饥荒蹂躏的非洲,的确是把舒适的生活抛在一边,目的是要看看“the faces behind the statistics”, “see it for myself”。他想给非洲儿童买一个皮球场,尽管他的帮助不是孩子们真正需求的东西

68. Mc Grady learned from his visit to Africa that _______.

A. he needn’t improve his basketball skills to reach the heights of his seniors

B. sport gave him a chance and means everything to him

C. people in hunger can never understand the importance of sport

D. what’s truly meaningful can be a world of difference to different people

【解析】(D) 文章最后一段谈到Mc Grady还没有获得 “an NBA championship ring”,没有达到Kobe和

Jordan的高度,但truly make a difference in the world的,却不仅仅是篮球,而是非洲之行教会他的对他人的帮助和贡献。

D

“Happiness isn't just feeling good. It's good for you and for society. Happy people are more successful, have better relationships, are healthier and live longer,” said Ed Diener, a professor of psychology at the University of Illinois.

Beyond your genes

Sonja Lyubomirsky, a professor of psychology at University of California Riverside, analyzed studies on identical twins and concluded that happiness is 50 percent genetic, 40 percent intentional and 10 percent circumstantial.

“Your circumstances—where you live, your health, your work, your marriage—can be tough to change. But most people are surprised that circumstances don't account for as much of their happiness as they think," she said.

Life circumstances don't result in continuous happiness, she says, because we adapt. That new car, promotion or house feels great at first. Then we get used to it. Keeping that good feeling requires something else: control of how you act and think.

Happiness defined

To gain happiness, you need to understand what happiness is.

Martin Seligman, a psychology professor at the University of Pennsylvania, says happiness is the pursuit of engaging and meaningful activities.

By “engaging”, he means when we get so absorbed in what we are doing that we lose track of time. “Meaningful” would be using what you are best at to serve others or to participate in a cause that's bigger

than yourself.

“Your purpose doesn't have to be giant,” says psychologist Dan Baker. "If you're 17, your purpose can be getting into the college of your choice. When you're a parent, it can be getting your kids off to school safely and prepared for each day.”

External factors

From 1981 to 2007, the World Values Survey took polls all over the world and measured what it considers happiness and overall life satisfaction. Of the 52 countries that completed the surveys over the 17-year period, happiness increase in 45.

According to the survey analysis.economic growth helped promote happiness for some, while

democratization(民主化)and rising social tolerance contributed even more.

Democracy provides more choice, which promotes happiness. Support for sex equality and tolerance of people who are different from oneself are also strongly linked. This is not just because tolerant people are happier, but because living in a tolerant society strengthens everyone's freedom.

69. Professor Sonja Lyubomirsky found that _______.

A. we get continuous happiness as a result of life circumstance

B. happiness is more genetic than circumstantial

C. new car, promotion or house can make people happy for a long time

D. to control the way we act and think,we should be happy

【解析】(B) 从第二段“happiness is 50 percent genetic, 40 percent intentional and 10 percent circumstantial”可知。

70. We can infer that ________ from the Paragraph “Happiness defined”.

A. to gain happiness, we should make ourselves get involved in what is worthwhile

B. to gain happiness, we needn't understand the meaning of happiness

C. happiness is the pursuit of engaging and meaningful activities

D. it's no point in paying attention to engaging and meaningful activities

【解析】(A) 段中 “happiness is the pursuit of engaging and meaningful activities” 及下文 “when we get so

absorbed in what we are doing that we lose track of time” 可推断出。

71. The World Values Survey suggests people are more likely to promote happiness if _______.

A. they can choose to be those who are different from others

B. they get much money or raise social states

C. they live in a democratic and tolerance society

D. they owns freedom and get support for sex quality

第二节简答题(共3小题,每小题2分,满分6分)

阅读下面短文,根据第73至第75小题的要求,简要回答问题。

From bankers to factory staff, employees in the West face the bleak prospect of losing their jobs as a global recession starts to bite. For colleagues in the East, the pain is more likely to come through a pay cut.

Human resource experts say cultural differences explain why Asian firms try harder to keep jobs in difficult times, which will stop unemployment and may help keep Asian economies afloat at a time of slowing exports.

The East Asian attitude may also make it easier for firms to recover quickly from the economic downturn since they will not need to rehire or train new staff, leaving some experts predicting a Western shift to Eastern flexibility.

“In the Confucian attitude, the right thing to do is to share the burden. There's that sense of collective responsibility whereas in the West, it's more about individual survival,” said Michael Benoliel, associate professor of organizational behavior at Singapore Management University.

Steven Pang, Asia regional director for Aquent, a headhunting firm, said in many East Asian companies there was an responsibility “to take care of members of the family and go through the pain together” even if that meant causing losses.

US firms from General Motors to Goldman Sachs plan to lay off workers by the thousands, but at the Asian units of Western multinationals, job cuts will probably be less severe.

Japan's jobless rate was 4 percent in September, up from 3.8 percent in January, while Hong Kong’s was flat at 3.4 percent. But US unemployment is expected to have jumped to 6.3 percent last month from below 5 percent in January.

Experts say that while there are noticeable differences in labor practices in East and West, the gap will narrow as more firms become more multinational and competition forces firms to adopt the best practices of rivals from abroad.

73. According to the passage, what does“to share the burden" mean? (回答词数不超过6个)

The sense of collective responsibility. // To go through the pain together.

74. Why is it easier for the East Asia firms to recover quickly from the economic downturn? (回答词数不超过12个)

Because they will not need to rehire or train new staff.

75. What's the passage mainly talking about? (回答词数不超过15个)

A cultural difference between the east and the west in facing the global recession

Earth spins on its axis,an imaginary line that runs through its center. The two points where this line would stick out of earth are called the poles, north and south.

The South Pole is marked. The marker sits on a glacier, which is on a mountain on the continent of Antarctica. The ice flows downhill about an inch a day, so a new pole marker is placed at the real South Pole each year. But there's no marker at the North Pole. Even if someone stuck one in the ice,it wouldn't stay in one spot for very long.

Dig down into the ice. Using only three or four yardsticks, you could measure the ice under your feet at the North Pole. The floating ice is less than ten feet thick in most places. But if you were at the South Pole, you would need at least two thousand yardsticks to measure the ice under your feet. It's more than a mile thick.

Of course, the weather is always changing, even at the poles. But generally the South Pole is much colder than the North Pole. in fact, the coldest temperature ever recorded at the South Pole was -130 degree Fahrenheit. That's more than 30 degree colder than the coldest recorded temperature near the North P01e.

Only water and ice lie under the North Pole, but there's plenty of land elsewhere in the Arctic. Many peoples have lived there for generations. But no one lives permanently in Antarctica. Scientists stay at research stations for months at a time, but they must bring all their food with them.

At the poles,"the sun doesn't rise and set every day of the year. At the North Pole, the sun never sets from May to August. At the South Pole, it never rises during those months. From November to February it's just the opposite—all sun at the South Pole and no sun up north.

As you can see, there are many differences between the Arctic and the Antarctic. Which one would you like to visit?

第二节 书面表达 (满分25)

篇回信。

Dear Editor,

The other day, while walking down the street, I was stopped by an elder couple. They wore simply dirty clothes and spoke with a strong accent. It seemed that they were from the countryside. They told me that they had lost their way in the city and were very hungry. They asked if I could help them out. I felt really sorry for them, but I had no change with me. So I gave them 50 yuan. They thanked me and walked away quickly.

I told the story to my roommates later that day. They told me that the couple are professional beggars who often cheat people. This confused me. I always thought the world would be a better place if we all helped each other. But I am disappointed that someone would take the advantage of this. What should I do in similar situations in the future? Should I just walk away?

Yours.

Lucy

要求:1.你经历过类似的事情吗?假如有,你是怎么做的?你认为应该怎么做?

2.谈谈你对这件事情的看法。

3.120字左右。

参考词汇:give … a helping hand; provide…with…; lose one's dignity

One possible version:

Dear Lucy,

I was as confused as you when I used to meet beggars in the subway. I would try to look away, but I could never escape their begging eyes and desperate words. Now I realize that we still have to be generous and give them a helping hand as much as we can.

Many kind-hearted people have been in situations like you. In Western countries, some people never give money to beggars in the street but donate to charities that provide the homeless with temporary shelter and food. I think some people have no choice but to be beggars. It's hard for us to know whether beggars are cheating or in real need. Perhaps their life might change a little if we help them. Just listen to your heart. Those who cheat people will lose their dignity, I think.

Yours,

Sue

off.

M: Yes. Once I went crazy over other hobbies such as stamp collecting and reading, but I find them very boring now.

M: It was hard at first--especially getting up before dawn to catch that 6:30 train. But it's

bearable now that I'm used to it.

W:Don't you think it's a terrible waste of time? I couldn't bear to spend three hours sitting on a

train every day.

M:I used to feel the same as you,but now I quite enjoy it.

W:Enjoy it? How do you pass the time?

M:In the morning I read papers to catch up with the news;on the way home at night I relax with

a good book,or talk with friends or even have a game of bridge.

W:Sounds like a good club. You never know.I want to join it!
