A
When I was a child, I was shocked at the idea that my sisters could be my best friends. Now, I wouldn’t have it any other way. At the time, the idea of my two sisters being my closest friends seemed strange to me. We fought all the time over toys, food, attention, what to watch on television—— you name it, we quarreled about it at some point. How could my sisters be my best friends? They weren’t the same age as I. We all had our own friends in school.
My mother never let the three of us forget that sisters are lifelong friends. Her wish like most parents’ was to give us something that she never had. Growing up as an only child, she longed for siblings. When she gave birth to three daughters, the fulfillment of her dream had only just begun. She had given each of us a gift and she wanted to make sure we did not take that gift for granted. She would frequently tell us how lucky we were. But there were other, more subtle ways that she encouraged us to grow closer. She never showed favoritism to one daughter over the other, as not to cause jealousy or bitterness between sisters. She never showed favoritism to one daughter, skating, shopping and swimming, so that we developed common interests. And when we were teenagers, Mom always punished us equally, giving us yet another bonding experience.
We didn't always get along beautifully and fought just like any other siblings. But somewhere in between Mom's lectures, the family vacations and the shared memories, we realized that our mother was right. Today I share things with my sisters that I do with no one else. My sister Cindy and I ran the New York City Marathon together, side by side, even holding hands when we crossed the finish line. When my sister Karen got married, I was her maid of honor. Cindy and I traveled through Europe together and even shared an apartment for two years. The three of us trust each other with our greatest secrets.
It was twenty-three years ago that my mother first asked me who my two best friends were. Today she doesn't have to. She already knows.

“First we make our habits, then our habits make us.”——Charles C. Noble
It’s such a simple concept, yet it’s something we don’t always do. It’s not extremely difficult to do, and yet I think it’s something that would make a world of difference in anyone's life. Break your goals into habits, and focus on putting those habits into autopilot. My belief is that having one goal to focus on is much more powerful than having many goals.
I try to turn my goals into habits, and in doing so, I put my goals on autopilot. Turning a goal into a habit means really focusing on it, seriously, for at least a month, to the exclusion of all else. The more you can focus on it, the more it'll be put on autopilot. Let's look at my marathon goal as an example. I was just starting out in running, and I had the brilliant idea to run a marathon within a year. But in order to achieve that goal, I broke it down into two habits:
1. I had to make running a daily habit.
2. I had to report to people in order to have accountability(责任) —— I did this through family, friends and coworkers, through a blog, and through a column in my local newspaper every two weeks. With this accountability, there's no way I would stop running.
The accountability habit took a couple months, mainly because I didn't focus on it too much while I was building the running habit. But it stuck, and for that first year of running, I would report to people I knew and blog about my running every day and I would write a column every two weeks for my local paper.
Once those two habits were firmly fixed, my marathon goal was pretty much on autopilot. I still had to do the work, of course, but it didn't require constant focus. And eventually, I ran the marathon. I was able to achieve this because, all year long, I had the daily running habit and daily accountability habit. I put my marathon goal into autopilot, and that made it much easier——instead of struggling with it daily for an entire year, I focused on it for one month and was able to accomplish it while focusing on new habits and goals.

C.He had no blogs before. D.He wrote for a local newspaper.

C.habits and achievements D.how to make running a good habit

Books don’t grow on trees
A local community college professor decided to fight back.
“The price of books for our students is just getting higher and
higher and, combined with the rising cost of tuition, it’s killing these
kids,” said Peter Jason, Ph.D. “Remember, students are one of the poorest groups of people in America. Almost half of them have at least one part-time job. In fact, one of my students has three jobs. She is a part-time sales clerk at a clothing store three days a week, then works three evenings a week as a pizza cook, and on weekends she does manicures(修指甲) at a beauty salon. And she still manages to have a high GPA (grade point average)and go to school full-time.”
Textbook prices are traditionally high. Adding to that problem, many college instructors change textbooks year after year; they either upgrade to a new edition or switch to an entirely different textbook. This further hurts students because if an instructor no longer uses a particular textbook, that book has no resale value.
Dr. Jason decided to make life a little easier and a lot cheaper for his students by writing his own book on public speaking. “Many books have an increased price because of bells and whistles: CD-ROMs, lots of color photographs, and lots of graphics. I talked to my students, and many of them, like me, prefer to keep things simple. So, during a sabbatical a few years ago, I wrote my own textbook. I made sure that it wasn’t long-winded. I called it Successful Public Speaking: How To Be Brief, Concise, and to the Point.
“Compared to most other public speaking books, mine is half the number of pages, and one-third the price. That is, $30 instead of $90. Plus, it is published in a three-ring binder format. So, when I wrote a second edition last year, students only had to buy the 35 new pages and delete 35 of the original pages. For only $7.00, they had upgraded to the new edition. I’ve had great feedback from my students about this loose-leaf concept. Maybe the word will get out, and more writers and publishers will try it.”
68.The reason why some students have to work is that .
A.they have to support themselves
B.the cost of living is rising rapidly
C.they lack the money for their education
D.a high GPA is required for further studies
69.More money is spent on textbooks because .
A.publishers pay more to the writers
B.students need textbooks with pictures
C.textbook prices are traditionally high
D.textbooks may be changed every year
70.Dr. Jason wrote his own textbook to .
A.make it short B.increase its price
C.make it easy to update D.add CD-ROMs and photos
71.It can be inferred from the passage that .
A.a college professor objects to writing textbooks
B.instructors don’t use particular textbooks any longer
C.more writers and publishers will write shorter textbooks
D.the loose-leaf concept is well received among the students

The more I learn about how your oral health can affect your overall health, the more of a brushing fanatic(狂热者) I am. But it wasn’t always that way. As a kid, I resisted tooth-brushing at bedtime—what a bore! I remember my mom asking if I’d brushed my teeth. I’d say yes and she’d say “Let me smell your breath,” so she could confirm it with a smell of Crest. But I’d learned just to take a bite of toothpaste right from the tube, without even making contact with a brush. What a stupid mistake! Soon my teeth were full of holes—something I’ve regretted ever since.
In those days we weren’t much into preventive care at either the dentist or doctor. That wasn’t part of the way of thinking of my parents’ generation, who grew up during the Great Depression. We didn’t know how important it could be, either. "So much of dental care is reactionary.” says Mark Helpin, head of dentistry at Temple University. “Parents will bring their children in only if there’s a problem.”
Medical research has shown the dangers of tooth decay(蛀牙) and gum disease, including heart disease, low birth weight in babies, dangerous and even deadly infections and now maybe Alzheimer’s disease(老年痴呆). There’s no longer any excuse to avoid regular dental checkups and careful oral maintenance—especially with young kids to get them started on the right path. It’s important to establish a relationship with a dentist the same way you would with a pediatrician.
The Alzheimer’s news is especially alarming. We reported back in January on a study at the University of Kentucky that found a preliminary link between tooth loss and dementia. Now there’s further evidence, thanks to a study presented last week at the Alzheimer's Association 2008 International Conference in Chicago. While this study in no way proves that gum disease causes Alzheimer’s, it’s pretty clear that the inflammation and immune response to these harmful bacteria aren’t good!
It takes less than a minute to brush your teeth. It takes two minutes to do a thorough job of brushing your teeth. If doing those two things twice a day may save me from mental disease later, I’m never going to miss these small tasks again—and neither should you.
72.When the author was a child, .
A.his mom liked to smell his breath
B.he was unwilling to brush his teeth
C.he hardly suffered from tooth decay
D.he made mistakes while brushing his teeth
73.The underlined sentence “So much of dental care is reactionary.”in Paragraph 2 means that
.
A.parents often bring their children to the dentist
B.people pay too much attention to their tooth care
C.people are unaware of the importance of tooth care
D.parents have no idea when children should see the dentist
74.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The researchers conclude that gum disease causes Alzheimer’s.
B.The possibility that gum disease might cause Alzheimer’s is worrying.
C.Tooth decay and gum disease have little to do with birth weight in babies.
D.The author’s parents used to bring him to the dentist for regular dental checkups.
75.The purpose of the passage is .
A.to encourage people to brush their teeth
B.to tell people how to brush teeth correctly.
C.to help people learn about some tooth diseases
D.to give suggestions on how to protect our teeth

One possible version:
Dear Peter,
Sorry I haven’t written to you for a long time. I was lucky to be a volunteer in the Olympic Games. I’ve learned a lot from the volunteer work.
Before the Olympic Games, all of us received special training. Under the guidance of the trainer, we got to know what jobs we could do and what we should pay attention to.
During the Games, some of us stood outside the stadium, guiding the audience to go into the Bird’s Nest with loudspeakers. Some worked at the information center and offered all kinds of help. Others acted as tour guides and took foreigners to some places of interest, such as the Great Wall and the Summer Palace, which helped them to get a better understanding of Chinese culture.
Being a volunteer was a valuable experience for me. Not only did I help others, but also I made many friends. Besides, I felt I could do something for our country.
The 2012 Olympic Games will be held in London. Would you like to be a volunteer as well? Please tell me your plan in your next letter.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
第二节 开放作文(15分)
one possible version:
In the picture, a boy is trying hard to push forward the hour hand of the clock while an old man is making a great effort to push backward the minute hand of the same clock. Both of them are trying their best, but in the opposite directions.
The picture shows different attitudes of the old and the young towards time. The old wish that time could slow down, because for them, time is life. Thy know well how important time is. As time flies, their life will gradually come to an end. On the other hand, the young want time to speed up just because they are eager to grow up soon. They haven’t realized the importance of time as the old do.
However, time treats everyone equally. It can go neither faster nor more slowly. And just as the saying goes, “Time and tides wait for no men.”Therefore, as young people, we should make the best of our present time to fulfill our dreams or we will regret it in the future.

M:I arrive here this time every day. You seem to be nervous about your lessons. Have you finished your review?
W:I’ve only been studying night and day for the last week. If I don’t get an A in this class, I won’t get the support of my country. Why do you seem so calm?
M:This class is really just a review for me. I’ve been learning it for two years.
W:That’s lucky for you.

W:Sorry to bother you, but do you have any time to answer a few questions about a television channel?
M:OK.
W:How many hours a day on average do you watch TV?
M:Not a lot really ——just over an hour mainly at two different times.
W:So what are the two main times of the day?
M:Around breakfast and then it tends to be really late——eleven or even midnight.
W:What sort of programs do you go for?
M:Some news, but I also really like some of the old comedy shows.
W:And turning to the new channel——which type of programs would you like to see more of?
M:I certainly don’t think we need any more programs like news and commercials. We need more about things like local information——providing a service for the community.
W:What advice would you like to give when the directors set up the channel?
M:I’ll advise them to pay attention to the quality of the actual broadcast, the sound system and do more of these kinds of interviews, like talking with their potential customers.
W:It’s valuable. Thanks for your time and advice.

Cheerleading first appeared in the United States in the late 1880s. For the next 32 years, cheerleaders were men only. Nowadays, cheerleaders, both male and female, jump and dance in front of the crowd and shout the name of the team, running and yelling, “Go, Team, go!”
Cheerleading is not just about cheering. They practise special shouts and athletic shows. The men throw the women high in the air and catch them. The team members climb on each other’s shoulders to make a human pyramid. They yell and dance, too. It is like human fireworks. Of course, they may often suffer serious knee and wrist injuries and bloody noses.
Cheerleaders have their own contests every year at the local, state, and national level. And the crowd shouts for them. It is not fair to think cheerleading is just being cheerful and lively and having a loud voice. Cheerleading is a sport in itself.
