EVERYTHING has two sides. One side of SARS is already clear. It is a deadly disease, which causes fear. There were 2,601 cases recorded on the Chinese mainland on April 24, according to government figures. Some 115 people have died and numbers keep rising.

But, there’s another side.

SARS is a reminder of how fragile(脆弱的) life can be. Suddenly, it’s not just the old people who are thinking about death. Everyone now realizes there might not always be a tomorrow.

Wang Xinying, a Senior 3 student in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, came into contact with a suspected(怀疑的) SARS patient in mid-April. He was told to stay at home for at least two weeks. “Watching TV about more and more SARS patients dying, I never knew that death could be so close. Life is valuable and I’m going to treasure every single day,” he said.

SARS teaches people to be grateful, not only for their own lives, but also for others. Doctors and nurses, for example, have to spend all their time with infected patients. As a result, more than 20 per cent of SARS cases in China are medical workers.

Xu Bing, a Senior 2 student of Beijing No.5 Middle School wants to be a doctor when he grows up. “Although they certainly know of the dangers, doctors and nurses remain bravely dedicated to saving people’s lives. I’m deeply moved by what they have done. I think they are real heroes,” he said.

SARS also teaches sympathy. The past few weeks have been terrible for Chinese people. But there are far worse things than SARS in this world, such as war, earthquakes and murders. Think of the Iraqis, who have been living terrible lives for 20 years. Think of how the Americans felt on 9/11.

And finally, SARS offers the chance to grow. All different types of people and government officials are joining together to cope in this difficult time. When this passes, China and its people, will have learned great lessons.

(From 21st Century, April 28, 2003)

There are three separate sources of danger in supplying energy by nuclear power (原子能).

First, the radioactive material must travel from its place of production to the power station. Although the power stations themselves are strongly built, the containers used for the transport of the materials are not. Normally, only two methods of transport are in use, namely road or rail, Unfortunately, both of these may have an effect on the general public, since they are sure to pass near, or even through, heavily populated areas.

Second, there is the problem of waste. All nuclear power stations produce wastes that in most cases will remain radioactive for thousands of years. It is impossible to make these wastes non-radioactive, and so they must be stored in one of the inconvenient ways that scientists have invented. For example, they may be buried under the ground, or dropped into deserted mines, or sunk in the sea. However, these methods do not solve the problem, since an earthquake could easily break the containers.

Third, there may occur the danger of a leak (泄漏) or an explosion at the power station. As with the other two dangers, this is not very likely, so it does not provide a serious objection to the nuclear program. However, it can happen.

Separately, these three types of dangers are not a great cause for worry. Taken together, though, the probability of disaster (灾难) is extremely high.

60.Which of the following is FALSE?

A.It is possible that a leak or an explosion occurs at a power station.

B.It is unusual for radioactive materials to be transported across land.

C.The containers are likely to be broken by an earthquake.

D.Nuclear wastes remain dangerous in most cases for many years.

61.The author thinks that the ways to store nuclear wastes are .

A.easy B.impossible C.reasonable D.ineffective

62.What do we learn from the last paragraph?

A.The power station is a safe place.

B.The dangers of nuclear energy can be prevented.

C.The general public are strongly against the nuclear program.

D.By itself, none of the three dangers is very likely to cause much worry.

63.What is this passage about?

A.Uses of nuclear power. B.Dangers from nuclear power.

C.Public anger at nuclear power. D.Accidents caused by nuclear power.

There is perhaps no other sport in the world quite so exciting as skiing. For viewers, it is a spectacled(奇观) of unsurpassed beauty. For skiers, it is a vivid personal experience, a thrilling test of mind, muscle, and nerves. And more and more Americans are discovering this thrill for themselves. Not too long ago, skiing had virtually no part in the American sports scene. It was purely a European sport. Then when came the 1932 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, New York Americans got their first good look at skiing and made the hills. Today ski trains make regular runs from our cities to the great, white outdoors. Lodges and chalets(山上小屋) dot the mountainsides, offering skiers the warmth of their firesides.

In addition to joy and exhilaration(兴奋), skiing offers other attractions. It is a comparatively inexpensive sport, and, for the young, the art of skiing can often be mastered in a very short time.

The special thrill of skiing is well described by Buddy Werner. “It’s all up to you,” he says. “No teammates can help. You’re alone. It’s you against the snow, the mountains, the terrain(地形), yourself. You’re a warrior(勇士). “

New York(Reuters Health)Researchers at Harvard University have timed babies’ ability to keep long-term memories to the period during which certain regions of the brain develop and mature(成熟).

Conor Liston and Dr.Jerome Kagan in Cambridge, Massachusetts found that long-term memory—the ability to recall a thing four months later—only begins to develop after babies reach one year of age.

The authors got their findings by testing the long-term memory of babies exposed to a series of actions when they were 9,17 and 24 months of age. Four months later, the now---21 month and 28-month-olds recalled the actions well, while the younger babies did not.

Kagan explained that the human brain starts a dramatic(戏剧性的)period of maturation between the ages of 8 and 12 months. The current findings suggest that this period of maturation is connected with long-term memory. Thirteen-month-olds, whose brains were relatively immature during their exposure to the events, were less able to recall them than older babies, whose brains had already gone through a period of rapid neurological(神经病学的)growth at the time of exposure.

Kagan explained that research has shown that between 8 and 12 months of age, babies experience “dramatic growth” in the regions of the brain known as the frontal lobe and the hippocampus, a part of the brain that is important for making memories. During that period, he said, individual nerve cells(细胞)physically grow.

68.The main idea of the passage is that ________.

A.researchers have found from when a baby is able to remember things for a long time

D.researchers have tried to find out how well babies can remember things

69.According to this passage, ________is able to recall what happened four months ago.

A.a 12-month-old baby and a 16-month-old baby

B.a 11-month-old baby and a 17-month-old baby

C.a 17-month-old baby

D.any baby who has reached the age of 13

70.A baby can recall what happened long ago probably because________.

A.it has seen enough of the world

B.its brain has already gone through a period of rapid neurological growth

C.its brain is going through a period of rapid neurological growth

D.its head has grown big enough

A Tight Situation

Sometimes funny memories (回忆) are the most special way to remember a beloved lover. It helps take away some of the feeling of loss. Before he passed away, my husband loved to share this story with our friends. Now, it makes me smile to share this story with you.

Our neighbor’s son was getting married in 1971 at a church, and we were inviteD.We immediately rushed out to the store, and I bought a nice pink dress with a jacket. The dress was a little tight, but 1 had a month before the June 30 wedding and I would lose a few pounds.

June 29 came and, of course, I had not lost a single pound; in fact, I had gained two. But, I thought a new girdle (收腹健美裤) would solve my problem. So on our way to the wedding, we stopped once again at the store. I ran in and told the clerk I needed a size large girdle.

The clerk found the box with the described girdle, marked “L”, and asked if I would like to try it on. “Oh, no, a large will fit just right. I won’t need to try it on.”

The next morning was hot, so I waited to get dressed until about forty-five minutes before time to go. I opened the girdle box only to find a new $ 49. 95 girdle in a size small. Since it was too late to find another one and the dress wouldn’t fit right without a girdle, a fight broke out between me and the girdle. Have you ever tried to shake twenty pounds of potatoes into a five-pound bag? Finally, my husband, laughing like crazy, got hold of each side and shook me down into it, and I was ready to go.

As we walked into the church, he asked if I could make it. Now, he was getting worried because I was breathing funny. I told him that I would be fine. I thought this wedding wouldn’t last very long. Unfortunately, I learnt that it would last one hour, twenty-two minutes and eight-and-one-half seconds---the minister blessed everything except my girdle!

My knees were blue and my legs lost all feeling. My husband was asking questions and trying to comfort me.

As soon as the minister pronounced them married, I rushed out with my husbanD.“Please, just get me out of here!” I said.

We ran out to our car, and once there he opened the front and back passenger doors against the next car. Right there, before God, human and the wedding party, I took off that girdle, when the girdle flew out of my hand and landed under the car next to ours. My husband was laughing so hard and we drove away.

Over the years, he and I had often wondered what the people of that church thought the next morning when they found $ 49.95, size small girdle in their parking lot.
