第一节(共7小题;每小题2分,满分34分)

阅读下列短文,从所给的A、B、C、和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A

On Thursday September 6,2007, the world lost an amazing musician and person. The great tenor Luciano Pavarotti lost the battle with cancer and died at 5 am in Italy. This great loss cannot go unnoticed and shouldn’t. Pavarotti was an incredible individual and he tried and succeeded in making a difference in the world. Instead of looking at his death with sorrow, we should look at his death as an inspiration.

Reviewing all of the contributions this man made with his life, we should try to contribute something great to the world we live in. Each person has a talent, and some, like Pavarotti, use their talents to create a better place for everyone. Many times, some young people feel as though they are lost, asking the same questions and getting no answers: What is my purpose in life? What am I meant to do? Of course we should take time to respectfully think about Pavarotti, but we shouldn’t dwell on sorrow because his death is something we can't change What we all can do to honour this great man is to commit to making a difference and contributing something to the world.

Even though not everyone is a musician, each person can learn something from Pavarotti’s life. The first lesson is that you do not have to become what you originally planned to be. Pavarotti was one of the greatest tenors of all time, but he did not start that way. Many people feel they are stuck on the path they’ve chosen. This is not the case! Pavarotti taught elementary school for two years and was an insurance salesman while pursuing his interest. For six years, Pavarotti sang for nothing more than just a hobby until he won an international prize. Just four years later in New York. He made 379 performances and retiried from stage opera in 2004, but continued to tour until his cancer diagnosis in 2006.

56. What does the author mean by saying “we should look at his death as an inspiration.

A. We should be inspired by his death.

B. We should be inspired to win the battle with cancer

C. We should be inspired to devote ourselves to becoming a musician.

D. We should be inspired to make contributions to the world

57. The underlined phrase “dwell on” probably means “________”.

A. talk little about B. think a lot about

C. fix one’s attention on D. look carefully at

58. In the second paragraph, the author mainly intends to tell readers about ________.

A. reviewing all of Pavarotti’s contributions B. the purpose in one’s life

C. many young people’s doubts D. how to use talents

59. What will the writer probably talk about in the 4th paragraph?

A. To describle the excellence of his performances

B. To inform readers of his cancer diagnosis

C. To tell readers other lessons we can learn from Pavarotti.

D. To introduce his successful life as a tenor.

60. In which section of a newspaper does the passage appear?

A. Entertainment B. Cover News C. Medicine D. Literature

B

When your parents advise you to “get an education” in order to raise your income, they tell only half the truth. What they really mean is to get just enough education to provide manpower for your society, but not so much that you prove an embarrassment to your society.

Get a high school diploma, at least. Without that, you will be occupationally dead unless your name happens to be George Bernard Show or Thormas Edison, and you can successfully drop out in grade school.

Get a college degree, if possible. With a BA(学士学位), you are on a good start. But now you have to start to put on the brakes. If you go for a master’s degree(硕士学位), make sure it is an MBA, which is more likely to take effect.

Do you know, for instance, that long-distance truck drivers earn more per year than full professors? Yes, the average salary last year for those truckers was $44,000 while the full professors managed to earn just $43,030.

A doctor’s degree(博士学位) is a higher degree you can get. You’d better choose a few specialized fields such as physics or chemistry where the degree can quickly be turned to industrial or commercial purposes. If you become a doctor of history or political science or languages, or worst of all, in philosophy, you run the risk of becoming overeducated for our national demands. Not for our needs, but for our demands.

61. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?

A. You should get enough education for society

B. Getting an education means raising your income.

C. How to provide manpower for society

D. Your parents tell you a lie about the income.

62. What is education in the writer’s opinion?

A. Something embarrassing and unnecessary

B. Something that is not as important as jobs

C. A means to provide manpower for the country.

D. Something that can help people get better paid.

63. What’s the purpose in writing this passage?

A. To show readers which jobs are better

B. To tell readers meeting society’s demands is very important

C. To look down upon doctors and professors

D. To advise people not to get a doctor’s degree.

C

I was off to go back to work one evening when I saw my two children were busy sewing things on the sewing machine. My 11-year-old daughter was, in the midst of her project, going to assist her elder brother in making a little cushion. I left, and after a few hours returned to find a mess in the kitchen and in the front room, and both children sitting in front of the television.

Havig had a long day, I was too tired to greet them and then I noticed the material my daughter had used. It had been purchased to make a color-coordinated(颜色协调的) baby blanket, and now had chunks(块) cut out of almost every piece of fabric(织物). Not stopping to listen, I exploded at the children and explained how angry I was at what had been done.

My daughter listened to me sheepishly, not trying to defend herself at all, but the pain could be seen written across her face. She retreated to her room, and spent some time there alone before she came out to say good night and once again apologize for the mistake she had made.

A few hours later, as I was preparing to go to bed, I found that there on my bed lay a beautiful, little cushion made out of the forbidden fabric, with the words “I love Mom”. Alongside it was a note apologizing again, and the innocence in which she had taken the fabric.

To this day, I still get tears in my eyes when I think of how I reacted and still feel the pain of my actions. It was I who then went to her and apologized for my actions. I display with great pride the cushion on my bed, and constantly use it to remind me that nothing in this world is greater than a child’s love.

64. The underlined in Paragraph 3 word can be replaced by “_____________”.

A. Hopefully came up B. hopefully went back

C. quietly came up D. quietly went back

65. What did the children do?

A. They cut out the material and made it into a baby blanket

B. They cut the material into pieces and used them to clean the TV set.

C. They cut the material into pieces on which they wrote apologizing words

D. They made a cushion with the material to show their love for Mom

66. What can be inferred from the text?

A. The two children are good at sewing

B. The two children are introverted(内向的)

C. The mother is often rude to her children

D. The mother is regretful for what she did

67. The passage is mainly to tell about _________.

A. a mom’s tears B. a mom’s love C. a child’s love D. a child’s complaint

D

Jenny Bowen, an American living in Beijing, has been selected as the only American to carry the 2008 Beijing Olympic torch on Chinese soil. Americans often say that there are only two things a person can be sure of in life: death and taxes. Many people feel that the US has the worst taxes in the world.

Taxes are the money that people have to pay to support their government. There are generally three levels of government in the United States: federal, state, and city; therefore, there are three types of taxes.

Salaried people who earn more than four to five thousand per year must pay a certain part of their salaries to the federal government. The percentage varies and it depends on the salaries. The federal government has two-level income tax, that is, 15 or 28 percent. $17,850 is the cut-off. The tax rate is 15 percent below $17,850 and 28 percent above.

The second tax is for the state government: New York, California, or any of other state. Some states have an income tax which is more or less the same to that of the federal government. Of course, the percentage for the state tax is lower. Some states have a sales tax, which is a percentage charged to any item which people buy in the state. Some states use the income tax and the sales tax to raise their revenues(税收收入).

The third tax is for the city. This tax comes in two forms: property tax (residents who own a home have to pay taxes on it) and excise tax, which is collected on vehicles in a city. The cities use the money for education, police, public works, etc.

Since Americans pay such high taxes, they often feel that they are working one day each week just to pay their taxes. People always complain about taxes. They often say that the government misuses their tax dollars. They all believe that taxes are too high in this country.

Dear Mark,

Our Chinese people are eager for the coming of the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival. It falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month of the Chinese calendar. At this time, the moon is at its fullest and brightest

The Mid-autumn Festival actually began as a thanksgiving celebration, while it is a time for family reunions nowadays. Lanterns will be hung in front of the house. On the evening, there will be a big family dinner.,and we can go to the open air to enjoy the beautiful moon while eating moon-cakes which are the special food for this festival.

Many western festivals become popular in our country, especially among young people . But I prefer traditional Chinese festivals which can remind us of the meaningful history of China. It is the most valuable treasures for our nation! We should keep them alive!
