For almost two months Dominic York, a 23-year-old hairdresser, wandered about hospitals at night, wearing a white coat and pretending he was a doctor. Yesterday he proudly claimed in court that despite his complete lack of medical experience or qualifications, he had saved several people’s lives. He had even been allowed to assist a surgeon during an emergency operation on a patient who was about to die on something she had swallowed.
“I watched one of those TV dramas about a hospital and suddenly I felt like playing one of the roles myself. So I put on a white jacket and a stethoscope(听诊器) and walked around one of the biggest hospitals in London. At first I just watched. Once you learn how doctors talk to patients, nurses and other doctors, it’s easy to take people in,” he said.
One of the patients he treated was Laura Kennan. She had been knocked down by a car and fainted. When she came into hospital, York was standing over her.
“He looked very professional. He told me his name was Doctor Simon. Then he gave me some sort of injection,” she said. And then he suddenly cleared off when a nurse asked who he was. She didn’t think there was anything wrong. “I would never have realized he was a fake if a policewoman hadn’t showed me his photograph a week later. When the policewoman told me who he really was, I could hardly believe my ears.
Judge Raymond Adams told York that he was “shocked and horrified” that he got away with his cheating for so long, and then sentenced him to eighteen months in a special prison for criminals with mental disorders.
“I can only hope that this will not lead to further problem. After all, you will have considerable opportunity to study the behavior of the psychiatrists(精神科医生) who will look after you while you are there. If you try to persuade people that you yourself are a psychiatrist after you are set free, I shall make sure that you are given a much longer sentence,” Judge Adams warned York.
56 York was proud of the fact that _________
A. a surgeon let him watch an operation
B. he could perform some duties of a doctor
C. he had cheated doctors for so long
D. people thought he could become a real doctor
57 York learned how to behave like a doctor by _____
A. watching other doctors work
B. talking to doctors and nurses
C. getting some training and experience
D. observing doctors while he was a patient
58 Why was Laura Kennan in hospital?
A. She had swallowed something and almost died
B. She had to have an emergency operation
C. She had been injured in a road accident
D. She had lost consciousness while driving
59 The judge’s remark implied that York would be more severely punished if he _____
A. pretended to be a psychiatrist
B. tried to get away from prison
C. was proud of what he had done
D. studied the behavior of the psychiatrist
B
President Coolidge’s statement, “ The business of America is business,” still points to an important truth today that business institutions have more prestige(威望)in America society than any other kind of organizations, including the government. Why do business institutions possess this great prestige?
One reason is that Americans view business as being more firmly based on the aim of competition than other institutions in society. Since competition is seen as the major source of progress and prosperity by most Americans, competitive business institutions are respected. Competition is not only good in itself, it is the means by which other basic American values such as individual freedom, equality of opportunity, and hard work are protected.
Competition protects the freedom of the individual by ensuring that there is no monopoly(垄断)of power. In contrast to one, all-powerful government, many businesses compete against each other for advantage. Theoretically, if one business tries to take unfair advantage of its customers, it will lose to competing business which treats its customers more fairly. Where many businesses compete for the customers’ dollars, they can not afford to treat them like inferiors(下等人)or slaves.
A contrast is often made between business, which is competitive, and government, which is a monopoly. Because business is competitive, many Americans believe that is more supportive of freedom than government, even though government leaders are elected by the people and business leaders are not. Many Americans believe, then, that competition is as important as, or even more important than, democracy (民主) in preserving freedom.
60 The statement “ The business of America is business” probably means _________.
A. America is a great power in world business
B. its business is competitive and has a lot to do with Americans
C. the business institutions in America are more important than the government.
D. business problems are of great importance to the American government.
61 Americans believe that they can realize their personal values only _____.
A. by protecting their individual freedom.
B. when given equality of opportunity
C. by way of competition
D. through doing business
62 Who can benefit from business competition?
A. People with aims of equality and freedom.
B. Both business institutions and government
C.Honest businessmen
D. Both businessmen and their customers
63 Government is believed to differ sharply from business because of ______.
A. its role in protecting basic American values.
B. its complete control of power
C. its democratic way of exercising leadership
D. its function in preserving personal freedom
C
The modern age is an age of electricity. People are so used to electric lights, radio, televisions, and telephones that it is hard to imagine what life would be like without them. When there’s a power failure, people grope(摸索)about in candlelight, cars hesitate in the streets because there are no traffic lights to guide them, and food spoils in silent refrigerators.
Yet, people began to understand how electricity works only a little more than two centuries ago. Nature has apparently been experimenting in this field for millions of years. Scientists are discovering more and more that the living world may hold many interesting secrets of electricity that could benefit human-beings.
All living cells send out tiny pulses of electricity. As the heart beats, it sends out pulses of record; they form an electrocardiogram(心电图),which a doctor can study to determine how well the heart is working. The brain, too, sends out brain waves of electricity, which can be recorded in an electroencephalogram(脑电图). The electric currents generated by most living cells are extremely small— often so small that sensitive instruments are needed to record them. But in some animals, certain muscle cells have become so specialized as electrical generators that they do not work as muscle cells at all. When large numbers of these cells are linked together, the effects can be astonishing.
The electric eel is an amazing storage battery. It can send a jolt (摇摆) of as much as eight hundred volts of electricity through the water in which it lives. ( an electric house current is only one hundred twenty volts.) As many as four-fifths of all the cells in the electric eel’s body are specialized for generating electricity, and the strength of the shock it can deliver corresponds roughly to length of its body.
64 What might be the best title of the passage?
A. Secrets of electricity B. History of electricity
C. The amazing electric eel D. Modern age of electricity
65 People began to understand ___ a little more than two centuries ago.
A. the living world may hold many interesting secrets of electricity.
B. how an electrocardiogram forms
C. brain waves of electricity
D. how electricity works
66 The word “eel” refers to a kind of ______.
A. electricity B. fish C. mammal D. container
67 What could we conclude from the passage?
A. All living things generate electricity
B. All electricity benefits human-beings
C. All things will spoil without electricity
D. The age of electricity has been several centuries
D
There are two opposing theories about what makes a good relationship. Some psychologists believe opposites attract and form a complete unit. Others swear by the old saying “birds of a feather stay together.” Either type of relationship can work equally well, but research has shown that couples who share similar interests, attitudes and backgrounds are more likely to stay together longer. Of course, it’s tempting(诱惑,吸引人的) to believe in the first flush of passion that your love can overcome all barriers, but in reality that is unlikely to be the case. Successful relationships also need their fair share of that hard –to-define factor known as “chemistry” But all of these things aside, most happy and contented couples would agree that a relationship cannot survive if it doesn’t have one key ingredient — compatibility(相容性). To identify how compatible you and your partner really are, choose one answer only to each question in the following section A , then (but only if you think you can stand to hear the worst!) compare your answers with those of your partner.
Section A General Relationship
This section concerns the quality of your interpersonal relationship with your partner ---- how much you like to be together, how much intimacy(亲密) and caring there is, how you deal with disagreements, jealousies, and the whole process of give and take. In many ways, this is the most sensitive indicator of compatibility since it affects, and is influenced by, all the other more specific areas.
1 Do you often think about ending your relationship
a. It would be very painful if you were to part.
b. Only when you are fed up with your partner.
c. It is almost a daily occurrence
2 How often do you and your partner communicate with each other?
a. You tell each other all your most private fears and fantasies.
b. There are some things in your lives you would prefer to keep private.
c. The survival of your relationship depends largely on regular lies.
3 On your birthday, your partner would…
a. Instinctively(本能地) know exactly what would please you.
b. Probably buy you something you have to exchange later.
c. Manage to waste money on a totally unsuitable gift
4 Do you like to be alone together?
a Your partner is the most exciting person you know.
b You feel that a break from each other improves your appreciation.
c You try to reduce the boredom by surrounding yourself with friends.
5 What sort of arguments do you have?
a Disagreements are openly aired and quickly solved.
b There are some topics which you had better avoid discussion.
c You arguing constantly over minor as well as major issues.
6 Have you made a good choice in your partner?
a You have never met anyone who made you feel quite so fulfilled.
b You believe life is a compromise(妥协) and you are both reasonably well-matched.
c You are making the best of a bad job in the hope that someone better will show up.
7 You arrive home hot and tried from work. Your partner would…
a Make allowance for your bad temper and do their best to put you in a good mood.
b Pour you a stiff drink and stay out of you for a while.
c Bombard you with problems of their own before you get a chance to sit down.
8 When you go to a party, you are always on the lookout for…
a Exciting conversation.
b New friendships
c A replacement for your partner
9 You find your partner in a passionate talk with a very attractive person. Your concern is for…
a Your apparent inability to satisfy them
b Your lost youth
c Losing your financial security
10 Overall, how would you describe your relationship?
a The perfect love-match
b Passionate, but with definite ups and downs
c Slightly better than complete loneliness
68 According to the first paragraph, the following ingredients all have to do with the good relationship between two lovers EXCEPT
A. compatibility B. chemicals C. similar interests D. same kind of people
69 According to the quiz, a well-matched couple would
A. instinctively know exactly what would please each other
B. try to reduce the boredom by surrounding themselves with friends
C. depend largely on regular lies
D. always spend their time in the hope that they could change the partner
70 If you have a good partner, you would most probably
A. prefer something in your life to be kept private
B. buy an unsuitable gift for him on his birthday
C. have some disagreements but they are usually quickly solved
D. find it better than loneliness

The flag, the most common symbol of a nation in the modern world, is also one of the most ancient. With a clear symbolic meaning, the flag in the traditional form is still used today to mark buildings, ships and other vehicles related to a country.
The national flag as we know it today is in no way a primitive (原始的) artifact. It is, rather, the product of thousands of years’ development. Historians believe that it had two major ancestors, of which the earlier served to show wind direction.
Early human beings used very fragile(脆弱的) houses and boats. Often strong winds would tear roofs from houses or cause high waves that endangered travelers. People’s food supplies were similarly vulnerable. Even after they had learned how to plant grains, they still needed help from nature to ensure good harvests. Therefore they feared and depend on the power of the wind, which could bring warmth from one direction and cold from another.
Using a simple piece of cloth tied to the top of a post to tell the direction of the wind was more dependable than earlier methods, such as watching the rising of smoke from a fire. The connection of the flag with heavenly power was therefore reasonable. Early human societies began to fix long pieces of cloth to the tops of totems (图腾) before carrying them into battle. They believed that the power of the wind would be added to the good wishes of gods and ancestors represented by the totems themselves.
These flags developed very slowly into modern flags. The first known flag of a nation or a ruler was unmarked: The king of China around 1000 BC was known to have a white flag carried ahead of him. This practice might have been learned from Egyptians even further in the past, but it was from China that it spread over trade routes through India, then across Arab Lands, and finally to Europe, where it met up with the other ancestor of the national flag.
71 The best title for the passage would be______
A. Development of the National Flag
B. Power of the National Flag
C. Type of Flags
D. Uses of flags
72 The underlined word “vulnerable” in paragraph 3 means _____
A. impossible to make sure of
B. likely to be protected
C. easy to damage
D. difficult to find
73 The earliest flags were connected with heavenly power because _______
A. they could tell wind direction
B. they could bring good luck to fighters
C. they were handed down by the ancestors
D. they were believed to stand for natural forces
74 What does the author know of the first national flag?
A. He knows when it was sent to Europe
B. He believes it was made in China
C. He thinks it came from China
D. He doubts where it started
75 What will the author most probably talk about next?
A. The role of China in the spread of the national flag
B. The second ancestor of the national flag
C. The use of modern flags in Europe
D. The importance of modern flags

One possible version:
The 21st Century, a newspaper, published a report on March 19th on the people who can use a foreign language, mainly English. And from the chart below we can see the different attitudes the people have towards the foreign language learning.
Over 26.3% of the people think a foreign language is a must in both their work and their daily life. In addition, about 39% of the people are learning or willing to learn a foreign language for the coming Olympic Games. The two numbers above make up nearly 2/3 of the total population. Among the other people who have taken up foreign learning, there’re some who consider foreign languages a useful tool for communication; Some who have learned it just out of personal interest; and some who believe that they’re forced to do so as a result of fierce competition. These three parts altogether account for over 20% of the whole population. However, the chart also shows that about 15.2% of the people take foreign languages to be useless and they take no interest in it at all.
I believe a much larger number will be added to the chart as our China becomes more international with the Olympics drawing near.
