       Parents whose children show a special interest in a sport feel very difficult to make a decision about their children’s /careers. Should they allow their children to train to become top sports men and women? Information for New Students

CLASS TIME: 9:00a.m.---10:30a.m., 11:00a.m.---12:30p.m., 1:30p.m.---3:00p.m.. The Language Center is open Monday to /Friday. Each class has one afternoon free per /week. On the first day, go to the lecture hall to check your /timetable.

SELF-ACCESS: The language laboratory (Room 1110) is open Monday to Friday from 3:15p.m. to 5:00p.m. for all full-time /students.

You can learn how to use computers for language games or word-processing(文字处理). There are tapes for students to borrow to practice their /English. Go in and ask the teacher to show /you. If you plan to take public examinations, there are dictation(听写)and listening comprehension tapes for you to practice /with. There are cloze exercises on the /computers. Ask your class teacher for a list of past exam /essays. Students can borrow tapes to take home but they must be returned after two /days.

ATTENDANCE(出勤):All students are expected to attend classes as it is /required. Students who do not attend classes will be reported to /OSS. Eighty percent attendance is required for students to receive their certificates(证书)when they finish their /courses. It is also required by OSS for an extension to your /visa.

BOOKS: If students are given course books, the books are their /responsibility. If a book is lost, the student will be expected to pay for /it.

How to improve English speaking skills is probably the biggest problem that is troubling most of the English /learners. If you are one of them, try to do the following things.

l         Practice speaking English where you /can. Any practice is good, whether you speak to someone who is a native English speaker or /not. Don't be shy to /speak. The more you do it the more confident you'll /become.

l         If you have the opportunity to speak to native speakers, don't miss /it. They are very likely to correct you if you use a wrong /word. Experimenting with vocabulary is a good way of making you sound like a native /speaker.

l         Don' t try hard to apply complex (复杂的) sentence /structures. Using simple ones is OK as long as you can express yourself /clearly.

l         Don't be afraid if you don't know what people are saying to /you. You can often get clues (线索) to what people are talking about by looking at their body /language.

l         Try not to translate into and from your own /language. This takes too much time and will easily make you /nervous.

l         If you don't know the word for a certain thing, you can try describing what it is like or drawing a /picture.

l         Don't speak too fast! If you speak too fast, it will be very difficult for people to understand you, especially when your English is not good /enough.

Boys, for whom guns hold great interest, will like the mystery and the war that the family escapes /from.

     The Sound of Music is the type of film which more producers should try to /follow. The music, especially the songs, remains in everybody' s /memory. It is light, tuneful and memorable, and it appeals to both the young and the /old. The photography and the color are very attractive, /too. The scenes and the background are very important in keeping with the story and

the effect is /wonderful.

     The acting is superb, as every feeling is brought out /fully.
