Walking around the small English city of Bath is like walking around a living museum. You can’t help breathing in the history and staring in wonder at the beautiful old buildings that line the streets.
Its name comes from the fact that it was built around a natural spring, now in the heart of the city. It was the Romans who, 2,000 years ago, built baths using the naturally hot water that came up from the ground. One of the major attractions of the city are the Roman Baths that still function as they did in the past.
Located in the southwest of the country, the city is surrounded by the green and pleasant hills England is famous for. The first people to live in the area were the original Britons(英国人), called the Celts. They were also attracted to the area by the springs.
One of English literature’s greatest figures, Jane Austen, lived in Bath from 1801 to 1806. She knew the city so well that she based two of her novels, “Northanger Abbey”(<<诺桑觉寺>>) and “Persuasion”(<<劝导>>), in the city.
Today Bath is protected as a World Heritage Site. It is a great place to visit to really get a feel of how an English city must have felt and looked like 200 years ago. You can wander around and lose yourself in the small cobbled alleyways(石子小巷) that lead from one historic site to another. An ancient philosopher’s wisdom can be compared in value to gold. Now “The Art of War” by the great thinker Sun Tzu has actually been printed on pure gold. There are 5,000 of these bookstores across China, costing 19,600 yuan each.
Known as the world’s oldest book on military strategy(军事策略), it was originally written on bamboo strips(竹简). Sun Tzu lived in about 500 BC in the late Spring and Autumn Period. There id little information about Sun Tzu’s real life.
But according to one story, dthe king asked Sun Tzu to gibe a demonstration of his way of training the army. Two groups of the king’s concubines(妃子) played the soldiers and two of the king’s favourites acted as commanders. Sun Tzu gave them orders, but they thought it was just a game and couldn’t stop laughing. Sun Tzu said, “if the order is not clear it’s my fault, but if the order is and soldier don’t obey, it’s the commanders’ fault.” He then killed the two commanders, despite the king’s protest. When Sun Tzu gave new orders, the concubines performed perfectly.
Sun Tzu’s book became popular with leaders in Asia and later in the West. In 1782 a Frenchman named Amiot took the book to Europe. It is said that Napoleon used its principles while conquering Europe.

With a healthy image, handsome face and Japan’s coolest haircut, Takeshi Kaneshiro (金城武)is one of Asia’s most attractive stars.
When “Turn Left Turn Right” (<<向左走向右走>>) opens in Chinese cinemas next month, there’s no doubt the 29-year-old boy will get even more attention.
Takeshi stars as John, a lonely violin player who falls in love with a translator called Eve, played by Gigi Leung(梁咏琪).
Many of Takeshi’s fans like to copy his haircut, clothes and even his smile. But they will find it hard to copy the way he plays the violin in the movie. He impressed his director to Kei Fung() by learning to play the violin in a few weeks.
This attitude to hard work is one of the reason Takeshi is such a good role model for young people. Like many young people, he values friendship more than anything else. “My best friends are my former schoolmates,” he once said, “We became close when we were at school and will be friends forever.”
Besides his good looks and hairstyle, he is well known for his healthy image. He started his acting career at the young age of 15 but, unlike other pop stars, he has rarely behaved badly. He stays away from drugs, alcohol and cigarettes. Violence, rude words and dirty jokes seldom appear in his movies.

Could the English language be on its way out?
Confusing grammar, endless vocabulary and strange pronunciation---you may have complained(抱怨) that learning English isn’t easy. But remember that your suffering is shared by the increasing number of foreigners who are studying Chinese.
Such is the growth in Chinese and Spanish, in 50 years time English will no longer be the world’s dominant (占主导地位的) language. Even now, in many developed and developing countries, there is a movement against English. For example, in the early years of the Internet, most sites were in English, German, French and Chinese sites.
