There is a discussion going on in American public schools over the best way to teach English to foreign students. Many schools use bilingual education(双语教育). This means that students study their core subjects(基础科目) such as science, mathematics and social studies in their native tongues. They also take a few hours of English.

Recently, many educators have begun to criticize bilingual education. Opponents(反对者) claim that bilingual education not only slows students’ development of the language skills, but also their adjustment to American life. They often remain separated from the mainstream student body.

These critics have suggested the immersion(浸入) method. This means that a student will take only English classes until they can function effectively in regular subject classes. Proponents(支持者) of immersion theory argue that in order to prepare these foreign students for college or the job market, they must be able to communicate in English.

Despite this disagreement, nearly all educators agree that English is a necessary tool for improving the quality of one’s life in America.

56. The author would probably disagree that _______.

A. Bilingual education B. English teaching

People decorate their bodies for many reasons and in different ways. Some groups of people have decorated their bodies for thousands of years. People do so to look attractive or to show that they belong to a certain group.

Some people decorate their lips, ears, and necks. For example, in Africa, the Surmese women wear a plate in their bottom lip. The Padaung women in Myanmar are called “giraffe women” because of their long necks. At a very early age, they begin to wear metal rings around their necks. The older they get, the more rings they wear. In this way, their necks become longer. What’s more, if they took off the rings, they would die.

People also decorate their teeth. Many Americans and Europeans like white, straight teeth. They spend a lot of money fixing and cleaning their teeth. This is not true in other parts of the world. In east Africa, some people pull out their bottom teeth. They want their top teeth to stick out. In some parts of Asia, women used to paint their teeth black to look beautiful. Today, however, young people do not do this. In Indonesia, boys and girls file(挫)their teeth. It is believed that a person with filed teeth will have a good and healthy life.

People around the world have always liked tattoos(纹身). Europeans learned about tattoos around 1770. A famous English explorer named Captain Cook went to Tahiti. He saw people there with tattoos. The Tahitians taught Cook and his sailors how to make tattoos. The sailors returned to England, and other people liked their tattoos. Soon tattoos spread to the rest of Europe. Many sailors still have tattoos.

63. According to the passage, which of the following descriptions is NOT true?

A. It might be the custom for the Surmese women to have a plate in their bottom lip.

B. The “giraffe women” would die if they took off their neck rings.

C. It was Captain Cook’s sailors who spread tattoos to Europe.

D. Nowadays in some parts of Asia, women still paint their teeth black to look attractive.

C

She used the tiny tape recorder for a graduate-school course she was taking. It was a micro-cassette found in Kathleen Weinstein’s shirt pocket that not only led the police to the killer, but also showed the New Jersey teacher to be a woman of extraordinary courage.

Weinstein, 45, was on her way to an exam at Toms River High School on March 14 when she got out of her car Camry to buy a sandwich at a shopping center. That’s where she met Michael LaSane, who wanted just a car like hers to celebrate his 17th birthday. The attacker told her that he had a gun and forced her into Camry. The car was then driven to Maitou Park, about two miles from the shopping center. It was there, police believe, that Weinstein was able to turn on the recorder she kept in her bag. According to the police, the taped conversation between Weinstein and LaSane took place as they removed personal things----bags, notebooks, her six-year-old son’s belongings, from the car.

“It’s unbelievable. It wasn’t the kind of thing you would expect of someone who is facing a life-threatening situation. Mrs. Weinstein bravely and patiently used every skill and power she had to try to persuade her attacker to simply take her car and not her life”, said the police.

“You haven’t done anything yet,” she tells her attacker. “All you have to do is let me go and take my car.” At another point, the teacher tries to get him to open up. “Why don’t you just tell me? It’s important. It’s determining your whole life and the direction you’re taking.”

Her powers of persuasion were useless in the end. Weinstein’s body, with hand and feet bound(捆住), was discovered on March 17. Before she died, she somehow put the micro-cassette into her pocket without her killer knowing it. Because she had asked LaSane about himself and his family, police quickly had their suspect, the son of a local official.

Weinstein left behind a new program at her school in which students were encouraged to do nice things for others. Every morning Weinstein would announce various good deeds over the p.a. system and she collected prizes from local businessmen and restaurants. Given her fate, the name of the program Random Acts of Kindness was really heartbreaking.

64. When Kathleen Weinstein was threatened by Michael LaSane, she was______.

A. frightened B. calm C. confused D. encouraging

65. When did the taped conversation begin?

A. As soon as the boy grabbed the teacher.

B. When they arrived at the shopping center.

C. When they removed personal things from the car.

D. After they reached Toms River High School.

66. During the conversation, Mrs. Weinstein______.

A. persuaded the young man not to kill her

B. asked the young man about his family

C. told the young man he should be punished by the law

D. begged the young man for life

67. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A. The Teacher’s Last Shocking Lesson B. The Murderer Seized

C. Random Acts of Kindness D. A Teacher’s Misfortune(不幸)

D

What does the word “heart” mean? Strictly speaking, a heart is an organ of the physical body which pumps blood into the organism(生物体). The term “heart”, however, extends to more than the physical body.

When lovers separate, one will often claim to have a broken heart, yet remain living. A sad gent or lady will often grasp the area between the ribs(肋骨) at the center of the chest, and moan(呻吟) in sorrow over the last lover. Physical or not, the heart in this case is also something that pumps life into the emotional body.

“Don’t lose heart,” says a friend to another who has been discouraged by one of life’s many trials. Now how can anyone lose heart? I ask. Easily, by getting discouraged. Again, the heart becomes a symbol of pumping life into a system but not a physical one.

When one gets to the heart of the matter, she gets to its center----which gives its meaning. When people beg, “Have a heart,” they are asking you to be kind-hearted----to recognize the soul in another. Having a heart-to-heart talk means sharing something from the center of our being with someone else. Speaking from the heart always implies communicating from what is real and essential in our lives.

Perhaps the most common definition of the word “heart”, therefore, should recognize that “heart” is something essential to every human being, whether it is physical or not.

68. The author writes this passage to ______.

A. correct others’ inexact explanations of the word “heart”

B. tell readers a series of humorous stories

C. discuss how to give a good definition to the word “heart”

D. educate people to old positive attitude towards life

69. According to the author, how can one lose heart?

A. By losing what one owns. B. By feeling sad.

C. By hurting others. D. By getting discouraged.

70. If you would like to have a heart-to-heart talk with someone,______.

A. you will follow the other’s advice without hesitation

B. you will give your own opinion in a direct way

C. both of you will be honest as well as open minded

D. both of you will talk about others’ affairs of yours

become utterly lost in the bad weather.

B.When the Titanic sank, the stories of the courage mainly showed in the face of inevitable death moved the world.

C.Major Sexton ordered the survivors on deck, and in one of the more remarkable displays of courage seen, the soldiers stood silently to attention as the women and children were loaded into the life-boats.

D.Within fourteen minutes t had sunk, taking with it 1,012 ordinary people.

E.Their behaviour was shocking.

F.There were about six hundred and eighty on board, of whom fifty were women and children.

The Best and the Worst

Under the extreme conditions of a disaster, human beings display the best and worst they are capable of. In the midst of chaos “women and children first” is the traditional way of doing things.

(71) . Sixty years before that, the passengers of another ship had shown even greater discipline and nobility in terrible circumstances.

The ship was the Birkenhead, a steam-powered troopship transporting British troops to South Africa. On 26 February, 1852, the ship hit an uncharted rock while rounding the Cape of Good Hope. ( 72) . The remainders were soldiers and officers of the 74th Highlanders, led by Major Alexander Sexton. In addition, the ship was laden with horses.

The initial collision had already caused dozens of the troops to be drowned as they slept below decks. (73) . The ship was sinking rapidly and leaning, but they continued to stand until all the women and horses were driven over-board to give them a chance. Only then, at the order from Major Sexton, did they break ranks and try to save their own lives. But the ship broke up, and four hundred and eighty-eight of the soldiers died.

In complete opposition to this bravery, was the occasion when nearly all the casualties(人员伤亡) were women and children. This happened on 1 April, 1873. The White Star liner Atlantic, under the command of the incompetent Captain Williams, was wrecked on rocks off the coast of Nova Scotia. (74) . In the panic, the male passengers deserted their families and tried to escape ashore. (75) . There were five hundred and sixty deaths. Of the four hundred survivors, not one was a woman.
