The Good Deal Dilemma(进退两难的局面)
I am a strong believer in bargain shopping. I like to buy high quality Christmas paper every year in January when it goes 75% off. Even though I could wave more by buying the superstore Christmas paper at a bargain price, it is worth it to me to get the nice paper and I am happy with my decision.
I bought 10 sets of Christmas china that were marked at 75 percent off plus an additional 10 percent. It was an amazing deal. When I got them home, I found they took half a closet to store. I already have nice china that I can use at Christmas .I decided it wasn’t worth it to me to use that much space for something that I would only use a couple of times in the year. I took them back and now I have more money in my checking account as well as some luxury towels I have wanted for a long time. I would have saved myself the time of taking the china back if I had figured out beforehand what I really wanted, but it is sometimes hard to decide at the moment. This experience helped me to realize that you can actually save time and money by passing up bargains.
The main advantage of getting things on sale is that you can afford luxuries that you can’t afford at regular price .My Christmas tree is covered with beautiful handmade Santa Claus ornaments(装饰物).I found them at a store about 15 months ago and fell in love with them. I imagined how beautiful they would look on my tree. I wanted to buy some, but they were $13.95each.It didn’t fit into our Christmas budget(预算),so I gave up the idea. Through the next few months the price kept dropping until it went down to $2.95.When I saw that price , I bought 25 of them right away. I waited another nine months to put them on my tree, but in the end, I got exactly what I wanted for an excellent price. Instead of paying around $350,I ended up paying around $75.Patience paid off.

China now has 350 million smokers, accounting for one third of the world total. Chinese smokers now become addicted(沉溺于) to nicotine at the age of 19,five years earlier than the average starting age of 24 in 1997.
Of the 1.1 billion smokers all over the world, more than 800 million are in developing countries. And as the world’s largest developing country, China also has the largest number of smokers.
Some frightening facts start to appear when we examine who China’s smokers are. Of the 350 million addicts, more than 100 million are under the age of 18, while more than 50 percent of male teachers and doctors will certainly have a bad impact on the young generation.
Teachers are usually expected to be role models for students who tend to consider whatever they do is right and follow their example. It is very likely that the number of teenage smokers will increase in the near future unless measures are taken to forbid teachers from smoking in front of their students of designate(指定)schools as no –smoking zones.
Their example only helps justify the addiction of so many others.
If educated people set an example by stopping smoking at least in public places, it would be much easier to drive home the notion that it is uncivilized to smoke in public places.
In China, there should also be a national law to ban smoking in public places.
These would make a massive contribution a cutting the number of people in China who are smoking themselves into early graves(坟墓)。(China Daily 05/31/2006 Page4)

A.Parents. B.Teachers only
C.Teachers and doctors D.Advertisements.
65.Which of the following statements are NOT true according to the text?
A.In China, those who get into the habit of smoking seems to be younger and younger.
B.More than half of teachers and doctors are smokers in China.

D.It is of great benefit to forbid smoking in public places.
D
History is full of cases where dreams have been a pathway to creativity and discovery. A striking example is provided by Dr. Otto Loewi, a pharmacologist and winner of a Nobel Prize. Loewi had spent years studying the chemical transmission of nerve impulses (脉搏). A tremendous breakthrough in his research came when he dreamed of an experiment three nights in a row. The first two nights he woke up and wrote down the experiment quickly and untidily on a pad. But the next morning, he couldn’t tell what the notes meant. On the third night, he got up after having the dream. This time, instead of making notes he went straight to his laboratory and performed the crucial experiment. Loewi later said that if the experiment had occurred to him while awake he would have rejected it.
Loewi’s experiment gives some insight into using dreams to produce creative solutions. Inhibitions (拘谨) are reduced during dreaming, which may be especially useful in solving problems that require a fresh point of view.
Being able to take advantage of dreams for problem solving is improved if you “set” yourself before retiring. Before you go to bed, try to think intently about a problem you wish to solve. Steep yourself in (潜心于) the problem by stating it clearly and reviewing all relevant information. Then use the suggestions listed in the previous section to catch your dreams. Although this method is not guaranteed to produce a novel solution or a new insight, it is certain to be an adventure. About half of a group of college students using the method for a week recalled a dream that helped them solve a personal problem.

A.Loewi should not have conducted his experiment
B.dreaming is of very little value to most people

D.college students should not try out dream experiments
70.The author seems to be in favor of according to the passage.

During the past few years, scientists the world over have suddenly found themselves productively engaged in task they once spent their lives avoiding – writing, and kind of writing, but particularlly letter writing. Encouraged by electronic mail’s surprisingly high speed, convenience and economy, people who never before touched the stuff are regularly, skillfully, even cheerfully tapping out a great deal of correspondence.
Electronic networks, woven into the fabric of scientific communication these days, are the route to colleagues in distant countries, shared data, bulletin boards and electronic journals. Anyone with a personal computer, a modern and the software to link computers over telephone lines can sign on. An estimated five million scientists have done so with more joining every day, most of them communicating through a bundle of interconnected domestic and foreign routes known collectively as the Internet, or net.
E-mail is starting to edge out the fax, the telephone, overnight mail, and of course, land mail. It shrinks time and distance between scientific collaborators, in part because it is conveniently asynchronous (writers can type while their colleagues across time zones sleep; their message will be waiting). If it is not yet speeding discoveries, it is certainly accelerating communication.
Jeremy Bernstei, the physicist and science writer, once called E-mail the physicist’s umbilical cord (生命线). Lately other people, too, have been discovering its connective virtues. Physicists are using it; college students are using it, everybody is using it, and as a sign that it has come of age, the New Yorker has celebrated its liberating presence with a cartoon—an appreciative dog seated at a keyboard, saying happily, “On the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.”
71.The reasons given below about the popularity of E – mail can be found in the passage except .
A.direct and convenient
B.time – saving in delivery
C.money – saving
D.available around the clock
72.How is the Internet or net explained in the passage?
A.Electronic routes used to fax or correspond overnight.
B.Electronic routes used to read home and international journals.
C.Electronic routes waiting for correspondence while one is sleeping.
D.Electronic routes connected among millions of users, home and abroad.
73.Which statement is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence in the third paragraph?
A.It shrinks time for communication and accelerates discoveries
B.Although it does not speed up correspondence, it helps make discoveries.
C.It quickens communication even if it does not accelerate discoveries.
D.The quick speed of correspondence may have ill – effects on discoveries.
74.What will happen to fax, land mail, overnight mail, etc. according to the writer?
A.They will co-exist with E-mail for a long time.
B.Fewer and fewer people will use them.
C.Their functions cannot be replaced by E-mail.
D.They will play an additional function to E – mail.
75.The writer mainly tells that in the last paragraph.
A.E – mail is nowadays becoming a trend
B.E – mail can sometimes be unreliable
C.the presence of E – mail deserves a discussion
D.E – mail users often ignore its disadvantages
第Ⅱ卷(共45分)
第四部分:书面表达(共两节,满分45分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,共15分)
阅读下面短文,请根据短文后的要求进行答题。(请注重问题后的字数要求)
Speaking of what sort of smartness is most desirable in human conduct, a friend of mine has this to say: Real smartness must be something that can be practised repeatedly and infinitely(无尽的). Then, he goes on to relate this event: In one European country there resided some Lebanese. Upon learning that ambulance rides there are provided free to patients in emergency cases, they rented an apartment near a hospital. Each time they wanted to go home, they just pretended to be sick, calling for an ambulance. On arrival at the hospital, they said now that they felt much better and had no need of any treatment. The next moment saw them leaving, safe and sound, to their apartment.
Their “being - clever” affords them only short – lived pleasure and joy; it could not be practised repeatedly, still less infinitely. Such smartness is based on “too clever to be wise”. Once seen through, they will lose the benefits they profited by playing dirty tricks. They will suffer the ruin of their own image and reputation as well as that of those who are tied with them by blood or by common interests.
When a person has done something to the discredit(失信) of one’s own image and reputation, it will surely involve others related to him in one way or another. Among those suffer most by what folly (愚蠢) he may have done are those who, to him, have been close in relations and dear in feeling.
Additionally, whether one’s act is wise or unwise, rather the summit of wisdom, depends on the result of the act; if , then the more often he does it, the better will he be believed. While repeating that act, he is not only earning himself an admirable image but also contributing to the fine impression and reputation of his relatives, his friends, his hometown and his motherland.
76.What does the passage mainly discuss? (within 10 words)
77.Please fill in the blank in the last paragraph with proper words or phrase to complete the sentence. (within 10 words)
78.Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?
People that have ruined their own images not only hurt themselves but will involve their relatives or friends.
79.How would the telephone operators react to a Lebanese voice calling for an ambulance from then on? (within 10 words)
80.Translate the underlined sentence in the last paragraph into Chinese.
