第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题,每题2分,满分30分)

请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

“I am in and I am in to win,” said Hillary Rodham Clinton, New York State senator and wife of former US President Bill Clinton, when she announced her bid to be the first female president in American history on January 20. Ms . Clinton, 59, formally stated in a video posted on her personal website that she was preparing to run in the 2008 US presidential election.

On January 16—four days before Ms. Clinton came forward as a presidential candidate —45-year-old African American senator Barack Obama made it clear he had the same dream. He has decided to form his presidential campaign exploratory committee. “As Americans, we must change our political situation,” he said.

If he succeeds in the 2008 presidential election, Obama will be the first black president in the history of America.

Although it is still too early to draw conclusions about the 2008 US presidential election, it is widely believed that there is no dark horse, and that either Ms. Clinton or Obama will win.

Ms. Clinton’s unparalleled prestige and popularity is her greatest advantage. Nearly everyone knows her in the United States. In fact, her popularity has actually grown since her husband, Bill Clinton, concluded his two terms in office. In recent years Ms. Hillary Clinton has become the hottest female politician in the US political arena.

Hillary’s second advantage is that she has one of the best political advisors in the country at her side—her husband. Bill Clinton, 60, still has the outstanding personal charm that helped him win office in 1992 and remains very popular. Many Americans value the memory of the good times in the Clinton age. This will undoubtedly be of benefit to Ms. Clinton.

Ms. Clinton’s third “secret weapon” is her outstanding ability to raise money. Former Speaker of the House, Republican Newt Gingrich, once said that Hillary could raise more money than any other Democrat, and that this amount could probably exceed the total raised by other Democratic candidates.

Obama’s major advantage is that he is young, energetic and charming. Obama is quite unlike the traditional politicians in Washington DC. Both media and the public have lavished (大量地给予) praise on him, reminding people of the years of Bill Clinton or even the Kennedy brothers. This is the so-called “Obama phenomenon”. Secondly, Obama is currently the only black senator in the United States Congress, and just the fifth black senator in US history. His father came to the US as a student from Kenya, which will make him popular with African American voters. Thirdly, Obama is an outstanding example of someone who is living the American dream. He was born into a common family and rose from the bottom of the society. He often claims to be the “poorest person in the Senate”. The common people find this very inspiring. Fourthly, unlike Hillary, Obama has taken a firm attitude against the Iraq war. This will help him to win the anti-war vote.

No matter who wins the election, Ms. Clinton or Obama, Americans will face an interesting question—a female president or a black president? Either one would be a new record.

56.People may choose Obama mainly because .

A.he is not so old and full of energy and charm

B.he is the only black senator in the United States Congress

C.he is the “poorest person in the Senate”

D.he is popular with African American voters

57.What does the underlined word “this” refer to in Paragraph 8?

C.Rising from the bottom of the society.

D.A firm attitude against the Iraq war.

58.It can be inferred from the text that .

A.Hillary is more likely to win the election

B.Obama has greater advantages over Hillary

C.Hillary takes a firm attitude against the Iraq war

D.Obama will pull the US troops out of Iraq if he takes office

59.Which could be the best title for this passage?

A.US presidential elections

B.First female president or first black president?

C.”I’m in and I am to win”

D.A mew record in American history

The world now has more overweight people than hungry ones and governments should design economic strategies to influence national diets, a conference of international experts heard yesterday.

The transition from a starving world to an obese one had happened with dramatic speed, US professor Barry Popkin told the annual conference of the International Association of Agricultural Economists.

“The reality is that globally far more obesity (肥胖) than under—nutrition exists,” Popkin said, adding that while hunger was slowly declining, obesity was rapidly spreading.

There are more than a billion overweight people in the world and 800 million who are undernourished, he said at the Gold Coast convention center near the eastern Australian city of Brisbane.

The “burden of obesity,” with its related diseases, was also shifting from the rich to the poor, not only in urban but in rural areas around the world, he said. China experienced the changes, with a major shift in diet from cereals to animal products and vegetable oils accompanied by a decline in physical work, more motorized transport and more television viewing.

Food prices could be used to influence people’s diets and drive them towards healthier options, he suggested, while acknowledging that the effects of such policies needed to be carefully studied.

“We financially support some things; we don’t support others. We control some items. So for instance, if we charge money for every calorie of soft drink and fruit drink that was consumed, people would consume less of it,” he said. “If we support fruit and vegetable production, people would consume more of it and we would have a healthier diet.”

University of Minnesota professor Benjamin Senauer used a comparative study of lifestyles in the United States and Japan to show how the costs of food and transport play a role in the problem.

Japan has one of the world’s lowest rates of obesity and the US one of the highest.

60.The passage is mainly about .

A.the problem of obesity in the world

B.the influence of diets on health

C.the spread of obesity-related diseases

D.the nutrition of different food and drinks

61.The underlined word “transition” is closest in meaning to the word “ ” in the text .

A.burden B.transport C.shift D.production

62.According to Paragraph 6, which may have the least possibility of overweight?

A.Eating animal products, having vegetable oils and eating cereals.

B.Eating cereals, fruit and vegetables and taking part in physical labour.

C.Eating animal products, taking motorized transport and watching TV.

D.Taking motorized transport , watching TV and having vegetable oils.

63.The reason why Japanese have the lowest rates of obesity might be .

A.their drinks don’t contain as much calories

B.their food costs less than that of the US

C.their means of transport is more convenient

D.the prices of food and transport keep them in a healthier lifestyle

C

The plain truth, proved by every-increasing medical evidence, emphasized repeatedly by health authorities, and printed on cigarette packages, has failed to prevent our innocent youth from smoking.

Many young smokers light up their first cigarette in the mistaken belief that puffing away at a cigarette is cool.

Anti—smoking supporters here in China must envy their counterparts in France. To help apply a nationwide smoking ban coming into force there on Thursday, 175,000 special inspectors and members of the police force will be sent out to watch public places.

In spite of doubts over the long –term success of the high-pitched French campaign, we admire the French authorities’ determination and sincerely wish their Chinese peers could someday soon, if not today, take off their kid gloves in dealing with smoking.

When people foolishly believe smoking is cool, it is of little use telling them to stop. What the French did, just like what has been done in our Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, is a good way to drive home the message that smoking kills.

When smokers risk a fine for lighting a cigarette in public, smoking is no longer cool. The forceful bans in both Hong Kong and France actually make smoking in public unacceptable.

We cannot expect the same to happen here anytime soon. Not until our country no longer gains high profits from tobacco.

It is embarrassing that while the central government swears to control tobacco, some local governments count on the health damaging leaves to fill their coffers (钱柜).

This is a suicidal addiction that must be gotten rid of. National policy needs to focus not only on the government –owned tobacco industry’s profits. It must also deal with the effect of smoking on the nation’s health and the huge amount of medical expenses.

If our government can help opium poppy (可制鸦片的罂粟)growers in the Golden Triangle with alternative crops, they can do the same to help our tobacco growers find practical alternatives.

This does not appear to be urgent. But it must be done since we know beyond any doubt that smoking is a serious public health risk.

64.What is the “plain truth” mentioned in the beginning of the passage?

A.Smoking is cool.

B.Smoking is harmful.

C.China has failed to prevent its young people from smoking.

D.France is successful in banning smoking in public places.

65.The underlined part in Paragraph 4 probably means “ ”.

A.take tough measures against smoking

B.get rid of their small gloves

C.avoid burning gloves when smoking

D.use bare hands to light a cigarette

66.Those who smoke in public places in France and Hong Kong .

A.are not convinced that smoking may kill

B.will be taken away by the police

C.are informed that they have to drive home

D.may get a fine as a punishment

67.Which of the following can be inferred from the passage ?

A.China will soon follow France’s example.

B.The author of the passage is a Chinese.

C.After the campaign, you will never find anyone smoking in public in France.

D.The author seems to suggest the tobacco growers be fined .

文本框: An Earthship is a home that is built of materials such as old tires and aluminum (铝) cans. It is the idea of a man named Michael Reynolds. Many Earthships are more or less self-sufficient because they provide their own heat, air and water. They often have gardens watered and fed by wastewater. They are comfortable and ecologically friendly.

The main material used in building Earthships is tires. Tires are plentiful and can’t be recycled like paper, plastic, and metal. While building supplies for most houses can be very expensive, old used tires are free. First, the tires are packed tightly with dirt. Each full tire weighs as much as 400 pounds. The tires are then stacked like bricks. The walls are extremely strong. They also help keep an even temperature in the house (between 60 and 70 degrees ) without heating and cooling systems.

The walls inside the Earthship are made of aluminum cans that are held together by cement. Then they are coated with adobe or stucco.

The roofs of Earthships are sloped so that rain and snow run into large tanks. These tanks hold all the water for the house, and pumps push the water through the pipes. Sometimes, water flows in certain areas of the house as waterfalls! Water that has been used is pumped out into the gardens where owners grow much of their own food.

In most of these houses, the southern side has huge windows that take in winter sunlight as a source of heat. Summer sun does not come in through the south windows, so it doesn’t get too hot in the summer. The house also has solar panels that gather energy for lights and hot water and cooking. The Earthships have all the comforts of a regular house without the high cost of electric bills!

In a time when we are running out of energy resources, pollution is bad, and waste is piling up, Earthships are the best places to live in. For people who truly care about the environment, Earthships provide a great alternative to traditional houses. You won’t be giving up any comforts, and the styles are attractive. We all hope that more and more people will build Earthships and take a huge step toward helping the environment and saving our planet.

68.What is the main idea of this passage?

A.Earthships are a good way to live and protect the environment.

B.Tanks hold water collected from rain and snow.

C.It’s important to grow your own food in a vegetable garden.

D.People who live in Earthships usually live in the desert.

69.Which evidence best supports the idea that Earthships are environmentally friendly?

A.They were invented by Michael Reynolds.

B.Water that has been used is pumped out into the garden.

C.Summer sun does not come in through the south windows.

D.The tires are packed tightly with dirt.

70.It can be inferred from the passage that .

A.a large population are already living in Earthships

B.the idea of Earthships will attract the attention of governments

C.the materials for the Earthships wil be harmful to the dwellers (居住者)

D.the northern side of the Earthship has no window

第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。

注重:每空格1个单词,不得用文章中的单词。

Attitude is an internal state that influences the choices of personal action made by the individual. Some researchers consider that attitudes come from differences between beliefs and ideas; others believe that attitudes come from emotional states. Here, we focus on the effects of attitudes upon behavior, that is, upon the choices of action made by the individual.

The kinds of actions taken by human beings are obviously influenced greatly by attitudes. Whether one listens to classical music or rock, whether one obeys the speed limit while driving, whether one encourages one’s husband or wife to express his or her own ideas—all are influence by attitudes. These internal states are acquired throughout life from situations one is faced with in the home, in the streets, and in the school.

Of course, the course of action chosen by an individual in any situation will be largely determined by the specific facts of that situation. An individual who has a strong attitude of obeying laws may drive too fast when he is in a hurry and no police cars in sight. A child who has a strong attitude of honesty may steal a penny when she thinks no one will notice. ‘but the internal state which remains unchanged over a period of time, and which makes the individual act regularly in a variety of situations, is what is meant by an attitude.

Attitudes are learned in a variety of ways. They can result from single incidents, as when an attitude toward individual’s experiences of success and pleasure, as when someone acquires a positive attitude toward doing crossword puzzles by being able to complete some of them. And frequently, they are learned by copying other people’s behavior, as when a child learns how to act toward foreigners by observing the actions of his parents. Regardless of these differences, there is something in common in the learning and modification of attitudes.

As is shown in the chart, most of the middle school students only have less than 7 hours’ sleep each day, some even no more than 6 hours, which is much less than required.

There are several reasons for this. First of all, the students are burdened with too much homework. They have to bury themselves in doing homework all the while. Another important reason is that schools and parents pay much more attention to their grades than health while, in fact, this will be of great harm to their health.

As we all know, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. In order to improve the student’s living and studying conditions, measures should be taken without delay. First, give the students less homework. Second, find a better way to teach and learn. Last but not least, to improve the teaching and learning efficiency is the best policy.

Text 1

W: Did you walk to the match?

M: No. I went by car.

W: Did John go by car, too?

M: No. He went by bike.

Text 2

W: Do you like the cake?

M: Yes, it’s very good. I like it very much. Where did you buy it?

W: We didn’t buy it. We made it ourselves.

Text 3

W: I’d like everyone to hand in the lesson tomorrow.

M: Are you going to grade it or is this one just for practice?

W: I’ll grade it for sure.

Text 4

M: Hello, Betty. Are you sure that Tom is in hospital?

W: Yes. His sister told me that. She is going to see him this evening.

M: Do you think I can go with her?

W: I don’t know. Why don’t you ask her yourself?

Text 5

M: I have a bad headache. Maybe I need more sleep.

W: Actually, you need less sun and some medicine. And it would help if you wore a hat. The sun is too bright.

Text 6

M: Deal. I’ll take this woolen carpet. Can you send it to my house, Please?

W: Well, where do you live, sir?

M: All right. Please note I’m only in on Wednesdays.

W: OK. Will morning or afternoon be convenient for you?

M: Late afternoon please, if that’s possible.

Text 7

W: What do you do int eh evening, Peter?

M: I usually read newspapers and magazines or watch TV every evening. What do you like to do, Jane?

W: I enjoy listening to the radio to know what’s going on in the world. I also like reading newspapers.

M: Do you read everything in the newspaper?

W: No. I hate the advertisements in it.

M: So do I.

W: There are also too many ads on the radio.

M: It’s the same with the TV. You can skip the ads in the newspaper, but you can’t do this with TV and the radio.

M: You’re righ

Text 8

W: Alex, I’ll help Emma with her packing.

M: The packing? No, no. Dot worry. We may have to change our plan.

W: Why?

M: We may not go to Scotland; we may go to? Wales or England. We can decide after the weather forecast.

W: OK. Is it time to watch the forecast for tomorrow on television?

M: Yes, listen. Northern Scotland will be cold, and there may be snow over high ground.

W: In the north of England it will be a wet day and rain will move into Wales during the afternoon.

M: Eastern England will be generally dry, and it will be a bright clear day wit sunshine, but it may rain during the evening.

W: In the southwest of England it may be foggy during the morning, but the afternoon will e clear. It may be windy later in the day.

M: Now, where are we going?

W: It’s up to you.

Text 9

W: It’s good of you to come today. We really need to think about advantage to company if we move to Innovations Park.

M: It’ll be great and I’m really looking forward to it.

W: I’m afraid, Sam, that the final decision is out of our hands. Head office wants to hear what we have to say but in the end…

M: But it’s such a good chance. Just to have our own prupose built factory would increase our output greatly…

W: I agree that it would be good to have a completely new building but Innovations Park is at least four miles from the centre of town. A lot of our workers are going to be put off by that.

M: I doubt that. If we were to offer a bus service at the beginning and at the end of every shift, I think people would like to stay with us.

W: That’s a good idea.

Text 10

W: Hello, everybody. I’m Jenny Smith. As the editor, I’d like to introduce you to our newspaper Campus Daily. We need 5 volunteers to work with us for our newspaper. Experience is necessary, but writing and typing skills are in great demand. We need people to rewrite articles and type them. We also need a good photographer. Although many of our staff members are journalism majors, we still have several engineers and a few law students working for us. Since our newspaper comes out five days a week, we need excellent students who know how to make good use of their time. There is some money for salaries. But don’t expect to get rich. Mostly, working with us is just for fun. Anyone who is interested in joining the staff, please let me know immediately after this meeting. Be prepared to start right away. The first issue goes to press tomorrow. Don’t wait there. Join us ! Thanks for listening,
