Are you a team person? Are you at your best as part of a small, tightly united group of dedicated workers? If so, the future may hold more for you than you think.

High technology, some predicted, would make team work a thing of the past. That’s happening in those areas of business and data processing where one person and a computer can replace a team of workers.

But, elsewhere, teamwork is very much alive. High technology has led to a new type of teamwork in a number of fields, including advertising, scientific research, engineering design, architecture and ocean exploration.Through computer networking, scientists, engineers and technicians at different locations----often thousands of miles apart---- can work on the same project at once. They can exchange ideas, try out different designs and test their results.

Examples? An engineering team can now design and try out a robot system, a new manufacturing process, or an entire factory before it is built. An architectural team can do the same with a building or a bridge. A medical team can simulate (模拟) a dangerous operation before performing it on a patient.

Of course, computer-assisted team effort doesn’t end with investigation and simulation. It now usually continues into actual design, manufacturing and testing. “Computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacture (CAM) are breaking down barriers between traditional design and manufacturing functions,” explains Dr. Prakash Rao, an engineering manager at General Electric. “Interdisciplinary (跨学科的) teams and engineers follow a product from concept to production. Everything is interconnected like a network.”

Sometimes a computer-aided effort can extend beyond production. A team that produces robots may use them to explore space and ocean depth. For high technology team work, the future seems limitless.

60. The underlined part “hold more” most probably means to .

A. maintain more chance B. give more rights

C. make more regulations D. store more information

61. According to the passage, the writer believes that .

A. teamwork requires more use of computers than that of human beings

B. the concept of teamwork is still alive and no longer the same as the past

C. high technology would make teamwork a thing of the past

D. teamwork will be completely replaced by computers

62. The examples given by the writer in Paragraph 4 serve .

A. to explain his idea of new type of teamwork is reasonable

B. to prove high technology has a promising future

C. to show that it tends to be an end to teamwork soon

D. to indicate the computer-assisted team effort just means investigation and simulation.

63. The author’s attitude towards the introduction of the computer to teamwork is of .

A. objection B. indifference C. support D. doubt

C

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Similarly, if we drink a little more water every day, we may find that we need to go to the doctor a lot less often. A healthy diet is made up of water and a great many different kinds of foods. We know that healthy foods like fruits, vegetables and fish, are important as they provide us with energy and fibre, without giving us too much fat and sugar. But why is water important?

The human body needs water to survive. Water is important as it carries poisons and waste out of our bodies. However, doctors advise us to drink plenty of water, much more than the small amount we need to stay alive.

Some doctors believe that water is important for our health in all kinds of ways. They believe that a great many illnesses and health problems starts as a result of dehydration—a lack of water in the body. Most people are dehydrated at least some of time, although they probably don’t know it. It is surprising to learn that if we feel thirsty, we are already in the first stages of dehydration. In fact, we are advised to drink water before we feel thirsty.

These doctors think that health problems such as headaches, high blood pressure and asthma could be helped if people drink more water. They also believe that drinking more water can help people who are overweight. Water contains no calories so it will not make us put on weight. If we drink water, we will probably drink less sugary soft drinks such as Coca-cola. Doctors also believe that drinking more water may stop people from overeating. They say that many people think that they are hungry when they are, in fact, thirsty. Doctors suggest, therefore, that we eat less food and drink more water.

There are still many health problems that cannot be solved by drinking water, so we should not stop going to see the doctor completely. However, if we make a decision to drink water every day, we may find that we need to go to the doctor a lot less often.

64. From the text, we know water can carry_________.

A. energy and fibre in our bodies

B. sugar and fat out of our bodies

C. poisons and waste out of our bodies

D. fruit, vegetables and fish in our bodies

65. Some doctors think that________.

A. people eat too much sugar

B. water is not important for our health

C. we should go to the doctor less often

D. some health problems are caused by a lack of water

66. Lack of water caused people to put on weight too much because_______.

A. they think they are hungry and eat too much

B. they think they are thirsty and eat less

C. water has no calories

D. it makes them thirsty

67. Which of the following isn’t mentioned in the passage?________.

A. Some healthy problems start because of a lack of water.

B. Fruit provides us with energy and fibre.

C. Drinking more water may stop people from overeating.

D. The amount of water a person should drink in a day.

D

After an earthquake or any similar disaster, parents and teachers need to help children overcome the effects of this frightening and sometimes devastating(让人垮掉的) experience. Psychologists say that if children go through a disturbing event before the age of ten, they are three times as likely to suffer psychological problems as so teenagers. After a disaster children may become easily upset, shy, aggressive, or afraid of wind, rain, noises, or darkness. They may have trouble letting go of their parents and resist going to school or daycare. Some children may even feel guilty thinking that they somehow caused the disaster through their bad behavior. Because of such common reactions, parents and others should begin as soon after the event as possible helping these children.

Some suggestions include talking to the children about what happened, letting the children express their own feelings, spending extra time with them doing activities together and reassuring them that you love them and won't leave them. For some children expressing themselves through drawing pictures or writing can be useful. Do everything possible to help children get back to a normal routine; however, don't be afraid to "spoil" these children for a while after the disaster. Let them have extra privileges(优待) and more attention than usual. Encourage the children to grieve after a loss. It should be OK for them to cry. Caring families and friends can do much to heal children victims of disasters.

68. This passage is mainly about_______.

A. the psychological problems children before ten are likely to suffer

B. the bad effects disasters bring to children

C. how to help traumatized (受精神创伤的)children to get over

D. the importance of caring families

69. After a disaster children can easily get _________.

A. shy B. aggressive C. upset D. all the above

70. According to the passage, a child who has just experienced a devastating disaster may become______.

A. more mature B. ready to attack C. willing to help D. less dependent

71. Which is NOT advisable when dealing with the traumatized children?

A. Allowing them freedom for some time.

B. Asking them to hold their feelings.

C. Encouraging them to show their grief.

D. Talking them into taking care of others.

Many families in the United States have a larger income now than ever before, but people are finding it difficult to make ends meet anyway. Almost everyone is wondering, “What happens to all my money?” I never seem to have anything left to put away.

Why isn’t a dollar worth as much as it used to be? One dollar is always worth the same amount, that is, 100 cents. But the value of a dollar is how much can buy. The value of money depends on the cost for living. Economists say that the cost of living is the money that a family must pay for the necessities of life such as food, housing or rent, clothes, and medical expenses. For many years now, the cost of living has increased greatly, so the value of the dollar has decreased. When a dollar has a low value, you cannot buy as many things with it.

No one fully understands why the cost of living keeps increasing, but economists believe that workers and producers can make prices go up. As workers earn more money, they have more money to spend, so they demand more goods. If there is a great demand for certain goods, the prices of these goods go up. At the same time, if there’s a shortage of goods, the prices also go up. For example, if everyone wants to buy more and more gas, the price of gas goes up. When companies with hold gas from buyers, they can also make the price of gas go up.

Families need to know what happens to their money. They need to make their income meet the cost of living, so many people plan a family budget. A budget is a list of monthly expenses. If your expenses add up to more than your income, you must find ways to save money. Maybe you’re spending too much on entertainment. Or if you’re spending too much on clothes; you may want to sew your own clothes. Budgeting helps you spend your money wisely as the cost of living increases.

72. What has troubled many families in the United States?

A. not-large-enough income. B. Nothing is left over to put away.

C. The increasing cost of living. D. A shortage of certain foods

73. __________ determines the value of the dollar.

A. The government B. The cost of living

C. The economist D. The bank

74. When ____ , the prices go up.

A. demand exceeds supply B. supply exceeds demand

C. demand doesn’t exceed supply D. supply equals demand

75. Budgeting helps ____ .

A. the workers to earn more money

B. the government to battle the rising cost of living

C. merchants to produce more goods

D. one to make his income meet the cost of living
