Computers are very important to modern life. Many people think that in the future computers will be used in lots of everyday life. It is thought that we won' t have to go shopping because we will be able to get most things which are sold in shops on the Internet. There will be no more books because we will be able to get all texts from computers. The Internet will be used to play games, see films and buy food. Most telephone calls will be made by computers, too.
Some people are glad about those new ways of shopping and communicating. Others do not think that computers will replace our old ways.
Some people think that one day we will not read books made of paper. Instead, we will buy and read books using computers, which will keep many different books in them at the same time. We won't need to turn lots of pages and paper will be saved. Computerized books will be used more and more.
While many people say it is a pleasure to go into shops and look at things you want to buy. It is also unlikely that many people will want to read large texts on our computers. Because paper books will perhaps be more friendly. Maybe computers won't change these two habits.

Ed Viesturs grew up in Rockford, Illinois, where the tallest thing on the horizon was the water tower. But on Thursday, Viesturs became the only American to climb to the top of the world's 14 highest mountains.
His last hike was up Mount Annapurna,in Asia' s snowcapped Himalayas. At 26,545 feet, its peak is the 10th highest in the world. It is the mountain that inspired him to start climbing. "It tends to be the trickiest, the most dangerous," said Viesturs. "There's no simple way to climb it. There are threatening avalanches(雪崩) and ice falls that protect the mountain."
In high school, Viesturs read French climber Maurice Herzog's tale of climbing the icy Annapuma. Herzog's story was of frostbite (冻伤) and difficulty and near-death experiences. Viesturs was hooked right away.
Viesturs got his start on Washington's Mount Rainier in 1977, guiding hikes in the summer. Fifteen years ago, he set out to walk up to the world's highest peaks. Finally, he's done. The pioneering climber talks about mountains as if they were living creatures that should be treated with respect. "You have to use all of your senses, all of your abilities to see if the mountain will let you climb it," said Viesturs. "If we have the patience and the respect, and if we're here at the right time, under the right circumstances, they allow us to go up, and allow us to come down."
What's next for a man who can' t stop climbing? "I'm going to hug my wife and kids and kind of kick back and enjoy the summer," says Viesturs. But for a man who' s climbed the world's 14 tallest mountains, he will probably soon set off on yet another adventure.

Everyday rubbish could provide a valuable source of energy thanks to a clever new nvention. Smelly methane (沼气)gas expelled from landfill sites containing tones of rotting houehold waste could be used to produce a valuable energy resource. In Europe alone land fill tips produce 94 billion cubic meters of methane per year but currently only one percent of what could be a valuable source of energy is used, the rest is burnt off to prevent an explosive build up of gas.
Methane gas forms when organic matter breaks down and is drawn off from large rubbish tips by pipes sunk into the middle of the waste. Until now this process wasn't possible on small sites because the pipe allowed oxygen to seep in and that stop the breakdown process.
Viktor Popov of the Wessex Institute of Technology has now developed a system to modify existing landfill sites by making them airtight while the methane is extracted from sunken wells. The site is covered by a special three-layered skin whose two outer layers are made of clay with a pressurized (加压的)layer of carbon dioxide gas in the middle. As the methane is sucked out through a central well it is replaced by carbon dioxide from the middle layer rather than oxygen, allowing the breakdown process to continue.
Unfortunately there arc no plans to use the power of methane even though Popov claims his invention could provide a valuable source of energy over the next 20 years.

C. Carbon dioxide doesn't affect the breakdown process.
D. The new invention has not been put into use.

A coal-fire stove (炉灶) provided beating for Zhao Yaoqin's courtyard bungalow in a Beijing hutong all her life.
This winter, however, the stove has disappeared from the 66-year-old's life, and an electric radiator takes its place beside her bed, a product to use clean energy in the national capital.
With the Olympics to be, staged in Beijing next August, the city is determined to eliminate the use of coal within the Third Ring Road that circles the city before the Games. The project to replace the stoves with electric radiators has been part of the effort.
When the city's four-month long heating season started on Thursday, coal-fired stoves, known as a big source of pollution in the big city, have disappeared from some 20,000 local households like Zhao's bungalow in the inner city "hutong" -- traditional alleyways (小巷) that date back to centuries.
"We used to boil water or bake bread on the stove," said Zhao, sounding Sentimental (伤感) In the disappearance of the coal furnace from her life.
Late in the 1990s, Beijing's air quality monitoring office found that the emissions (排放) of sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide from the hutong areas have been higher than the city’s average in winter, mainly because of the coal stoves. With the project to switch to clean energy for heating launched in 1999, the emission level of the two poisonous substances decreased by 42 percent and 44 percent respectively, this year from 2001 levels.
Zhao said the fee for electrical heat for the entire winter was usually around 2,400 yuan ( US $ 323 ) per household. With the government' s subsidy (补贴) ,however, she only needed to pay about 500 yuan, nearly the same price as that for coal.

C. The government spare no effort to make the environment better.

Sometimes life gets a little dull. What used to be fun and different becomes boring. That is the time to look for something new. It is the time for a big idea to get your mind off everyday life. So why not search for extraterrestrial (地球外的) intelligence? Or even better, why not get your computer to do it for you?
Over two million people have joined the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence ( SETI ) project. Based in California, the SETI project analyzes information taken from a giant radio telescope based in Smith America. Its task is to look for signals from outer space that might prove that life exists on other planets.
Processing this information is far too big a job for one computer. So the SETI project workers divide the work among volunteers who visit their website. Each computer gets some information to work out from the SETI network through the Internet This process is often known as "metacomputing".
It is a wonderful thought. You are sleeping, eating a meal or going out with friends. All this time, your computer is searching the stars for signs that might show something is out there trying to get in touch. Volunteers are proud of being involved in the SETI project. It shows that they understand the potential (潜能) of computing. They know that it is more than just a way of working or playing games.
Metacomputing may also be creating intelligence as well as looking for it. This idea is based on the theory that human intelligence is created by the way in which different parts in the brain communicate with each other. As the saying goes, "The whole is more than the sum of its parts. " People who join the SETI project sometimes wonder whether their computer will become part of a huge network that has learned to think for itself.
71. According to the writer, metacompnting may be creating intelligence
A. because human beings are intelligent B. because a computer works as the brain does
C. because of a network of many computers D. because of the number of computers
72. Which of the following shows the order in which the SETI network works?
A. Radio telescope →SETI website →Volunteers' computer →SETI base
B. Radio telescope →SETI base →SETI website →Volunteers' computer
C. SETI base →SETI website →Volunteers' computers →Radio telescope
D. SETI base →Radio telescope →SETI website →Volunteers' computers
73. When you are involved in the SETI project, you _________.
A. should analyse information from other computers
B. have to work in front of your computer
C. don' t have to connect your computer to the network
D. don' t have to sit in front of your computer
74. The underlined word "it" in the last paragraph refers to _________.
A. extra-terrestrial intelligence B. human intelligence
C. the SETI project D. metacomputing
75. The passage mainly tells us about _________.
A. a new way to work on the computer B. a new way in work and play games
C. a new way to search for life outside the earth
D. a new way to make life interesting and different
