The Leaning Tower of Piss has gone against the laws of gravity for seven and a half centuries . Every year , on June 19th , a professor from the University of Pisa climbs to the bell tower and measures the increase in the slant (倾斜) with special instruments . And every year the professor makes the same report : the tower has leaned a bit —about an inch more . Last summer (the year of 2004), the 125—foot —high tower was leaning an incredible 15 feet out of line . Scientists say that unless a way is found to stop the slant , the tower will collapse in less than 80 years .
The tower is leaning because the soft soil of Pisa will not support it . Its foundation is sinking into the soil at an angle , causing the tower to lean .Since a slight shake could make the foundation loose , the ringing of the tower’s bells was forbidden in 1959 . And trucks are not allowed to pass in the neighborhood of the tower for this same reason .

There is one word that is on the lips of Americans , day and night , “Sorry”.
One time as I was walking on the street , a young man ran by hurriedly , brushing against my handbag . Even as he continued on his way , he turned back and said “sorry” to me . Even in a rush , he didn’t forget to apologize .
One day , after I bought some apples , the salesman was giving me the change , but I wasn’t ready for it , and a coin dropped on the ground, “I’m sorry ,” he said while bending down to pick it up . I was puzzled —why would he apologize when it was my fault ?
Another time , I stepped on a man’s foot in an escalator . At the same time , we both said “sorry” . I thought it interesting : was it really necessary for him apologize ?
Later on , an American friend explained to me that according to the American ideas, the escalator is public place which everyone should be able to stand in . After someone occupies a position in the escalator , making it difficult for someone else to find a place to stand in , isn’t it necessary to express an apology ?
During my stay in America , I gradually realized that when friction (摩擦) occurs in daily life , Americans don’t care much about who is responsible . If someone is troubled , a “sorry” is always necessary . Even if the other person is hurt , the “sorry” would cool tempers . Perhaps this is why I never saw anyone quarreling on the buses , subways or streets in America .

In only two decades (twenty years) Asian Americans have become the fastest-growing U.S. minority. As their children began moving up through the nation’s schools, it became clear that a new kind of culture was coming out. Their achievements are made in the nation’s best universities, where mathematics, science and engineering departments have taken on a decidedly Asian character. This special liking for mathematics and science is partly explained by the fact that Asian-American students who began their education abroad arrived in the U.S. with a solid grounding in mathematics but little or no knowledge of English. They are also influenced by the promise of a good job after college. Asians feel there will be less unfair treatment in areas like mathematics and science because they will be judged more objectively (客观地) . And the money spent on education is more immediately returned in something like engineering than with an arts degree.
Most Asian American students owe their success to the influence of parents who are determined that their children should take full advantage of what the American educational system has to offer. An effective measure of parental attention is homework. Asian parents spend more time with their children than American parents do, and it helps. Many researchers also believe there is something in Asian culture, such as family value, the importance of education and so on, that lead to their success.
Both explanations for academic success worry Asian Americans because of fears that they could cause the native Americans’ unhappiness. Many can remember when Chinese, Japanese and Filipino immigrants (移民) unequally treated because of social separation. Indeed, it was not until 1952 that laws were laid down giving all Asian immigrants the right to citizenship.
63. While making great achievements at college, Asian-American students _______. A. feel they are mistreated because of limited knowledge of English B. are afraid that their academic successes take on a strong Asian character C. still worry about unfair treatment in society D. generally feel it a shame to have to depend on their society
64. From the passage we can know the major factors that determine the success of Asian Americans are _______. A. a solid base in basic mathematics and Asian culture B. hard work and intelligence C. parental help and a limited knowledge of English D. Asian culture and the American educational system
65. Why did Asian Americans prefer something like engineering to an arts degree? A. They could earn more money after graduation. B. They couldn’t find a job with an arts degree. C. People with an arts degree were looked down upon. D. People majoring in engineering were respected.
66. Why do the two “explanations” (Line 1, Para. 3) worry Asian Americans? A. They are afraid that they would again be separated from American society in general. B. People would think that Asian students depend on their parents for success. C. Asian Americans would be a danger to other minorities. D. American academic achievements have taken on too strong an Asian character.

East Timor(东帝汶) became the world’s newest nation on Monday after centuries of foreign rules.
East Timor lies between Australia and Indonesia. The island lies to the north of Australia and is 2,100 kilometers east of Jakarta(雅加达). The latter ruled the territory for 24 often bloody years until the United Nations took over in 1999. East Timor was invaded (入侵) by Portugal in 1642. Dutch (荷兰) colonial rule expanded over the rest of Indonesian archipelago (群岛) at the same time. A treaty in 1859 gave the eastern part of the island to the Dutch.
The Portuguese administration withdrew (撤退) from Dili, which is the capital of the new country, in August 1975. Indonesian troops invaded in December and Jakarta took no notice of a call by the United Nations to withdraw its troops.
The United Nations took over the running of East Timor in late 1999, helping to lay the foundations for independence. The United Nations kept some police and civilian officials in East Timor after May 20, 2002. On April 14, East Timor held its first presidential election, with 86 percent of those who could read and write to vote, turning out former guerrilla leader and independence hero Xanana Gusmao. This was a great victory over his only rival (对手).
East Timor is one of Asia’s poorest countries. It is an agricultural society, with coffee the main export crop. It also exports marble and has a lot of oil.
East Timor has a population of approximately 740,000. Ninety percent of East Timorese are Roman Catholic (天主教徒), whereas the rest of Indonesia, the last ruling power, is mostly Muslim.

第II卷(两部分,共35分)
第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
第一节、请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。注重:每空一词。
Whenever we meet with difficulty or fail, teachers, parents or others often say to us or perhaps we say to ourselves, “Never give up.” These can be encouraging words and words of determination. A person who believes in himself will keep trying to reach his goal no matter how many times he fails. In my opinion, the quality of determination to succeed is an important one to have. Therefore, I believe that we should never give up.
One reason is that if we give up too easily, we will rarely achieve anything. It is not unusual for us to fail in our first attempt at something new, so we should not feel disappointed and should try again. Besides, if we always give up when we fail, we will not be able to develop new skills and grow as people. Another reason we should never give up is that we can learn from our mistakes so that we cannot make the same mistakes. If we do not try again, the lesson we have learned is wasted. Finally, we should never give up because as we work to reach our goals, we develop confidence, and this confidence can help us succeed in other areas of our lives. If we never challenge ourselves, we will begin to doubt our abilities.
In short, it is important that we do not give up when working for our goals. Whether we succeed in the end or not, we will learn something, and what we learn will help us to become better, more confident people. Furthermore, if we give up, we have no chance of attaining our goals any more, but if we keep making great efforts, there is always a chance that we will succeed one day.
