第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分) 阅读下列短文,从每篇短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 A Heroes of Our Time A good heart Dikembe Mutombo grew up in Africa among great poverty and disease. He came to Georgetown University on a scholarship to study medicine — but Coach John Thompson got a look at Dikembe and had a different idea. Dikembe became a star in the NBA, and a citizen of the United States. But he never forgot the land of his birth, or the duty to share his fortune with others. He built a new hospital in his old hometown in the Congo. A friend has said of this good-hearted man: “Mutombo believes that God has given him this chance to do great things.” Success and kindness After her daughter was born, Julie Aigner-Clark searched for ways to share her love of music and art with her child. So she borrowed some equipment, and began filming children’s videos in her own house. The Baby Einstein Company was born, and in just five years her business grew to more than $20 million in sales. And she is using her success to help others — producing child safety videos with John Walsh of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Julie says of her new program: “I believe it’s the most important thing that I have ever done. I believe that children have the right to live in a world that is safe.” Bravery and courage A few weeks ago, Wesley Autrey was waiting at a Harlem subway station with his two little girls when he saw a man fall into the path of a train. With seconds to act, Wesley jumped onto the tracks, pulled the man into the space between the rails, and held him as the train passed right above their heads. He insists he’s not a hero. He says: “We have got to show each other some love.” 56. What was Mutombo praised for? A. Being a star in the NBA. B. Being a student of medicine. C. His work in the church. D. His willingness to help the needy. 57. Mulombo believes that building the new hospital is________. A. helpful to his personal development B. something he should do for his homeland C. a chance for his friends to share his money D. a way of showing his respect to the NBA 58. What did the Baby Einstein Company do at its beginning? A. Produce safety equipment for children. B. Make videos to help protect children. C. Sell children’s music and artwork. D. Look for missing and exploited children. 59. Why was Wesley Autrey praised as a hero? A. He helped a man get across the rails. B. He stopped a man from destroying the rails. C. He protected two little girls from getting hurt. D. He saved a person without considering his own safety. B If your boss asks you to work in Moscow this year, he’d better offer you more money to do so — or even double that depending on where you live now. That’s because Moscow has just been found to be the world’s most expensive city for the second year in a row by Mercer Human Resources Consulting. Using the cost of living in New York as a base, Mercer determined Moscow is 34.4 percent more expensive including the cost of housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment. A two-bedroom flat in Moscow now costs $4,000 a month; a CD $24.83, and an international newspaper $6.30, according to Mercer. By comparison, a fast food meal with a hamburger is a steal at $4.80. London takes the No. 2 place, up from No. 5 a year ago, thanks to higher cost of housing and a stronger British pound relative to the dollar. Mercer estimates London is 26 percent more expensive than New York these days. Following London closely are Seoul and Tokyo, both of which are 22 percent more expensive than New York, while No. 5 Hong Kong is 19 percent more costly. Among North American cities, New York and Los Angeles are the most expensive and are the only two listed in the top 50 of the world’s most expensive cities. But both have fallen since last year’s study — New York came in 15th, down from 10th place, while Los Angeles fell to 42nd from 29th place a year ago. San Francisco came in a distant third at No. 54, down 20 places from a year earlier. Toronto, meanwhile, is Canada’s most expensive city but fell 35 places to take 82nd place worldwide. In Australia, Sydney is the priciest place to live in and No. 21 worldwide. 60. What do the underlined words “a steal” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. an act of stealing B. something delicious C. something very cheap D. an act of buying 61. London has become the second most expensive city because of _________. A. the high cost of clothing B. the stronger pound against the dollar C. its expensive transportation D. the high prices of fast food meals 62. Which city is the third most expensive on the list? A. Tokyo. B. Hong Kong. C. Moscow. D. Sydney. 63. Which city has dropped most on the list in North America? A. New York. B. Los Angeles. C. San Francisco. D. Toronto C The answer is forty. Years ago, three scientists at Texas Instruments, Jerry Merryman, James Van Tassel and Jack Kilby, invented the handheld electronic calculator. Their first device could add, subtract, multiply and divide and it was small and easy to take. Yet after forty years, calculators in the classroom still add up to the same old debate. Generally calculators are considered to be useful——especially with more complex math. Some math teachers at every level support the use of calculators and students are even permitted to use them when they take college entrance tests. But it is also thought that young students should know basic calculation before they begin using them. Some education experts think calculators are used too much. Children, they say, learn to depend on these electronic brains instead of their own. Calculators may not only give students answers to questions they do not really understand, they may also keep them from discovering ideas for themselves. Other experts, though, say calculators have helped make mathematics more understandable to more students. They say calculators give students more time to understand and solve problems, and to develop a better sense of what numbers mean. That way, the reasoning goes, they can feel better about their abilities. 64. Which of the following calculation agrees with the question raised in the first paragraph? A. 65. Three scientists at Texas Instruments invented . A. the first electronic calculator B. the calculator handle C. the portable electronic calculator D. the first calculator 66. We can infer from the passage that in the past. A. math teachers supported using calculators everywhere B. students were not allowed to use calculator in tests C. using calculators in classrooms was under argument D. young students had to know how to use calculators 67. According to experts, calculators benefit students in many ways EXCEPT . A. providing them with answers to the questions B. stopping them discovering ideas for themselves C. making mathematics more understandable D. developing a better feeling of their abilities D Hiking is not only one of the best forms of physical exercise, but it is also one of the best forms of mental relaxation. It is good for all ages and especially good as a family and group activity. Since there are so many different kinds of hiking, it is not possible to give any general rules to follow. Short and frequent hikes, needing no planning or special equipment, are enjoyed by most people. ●Keep in shape by walking at a fast pace for at least 15 minutes every day. Climbing stairs instead of using a lift and running not too far are also good ways of keeping in shape. ●On any hike nothing is more important than good, comfortable shoes. ●The things you take might include matches in a waterproof box, a knife, compass, map first aid items and flashlight. ●Cameras may be taken, but don’t load with too much. ●On longer hikes keep a comfortable, steady pace and take rest stops often. ●Drink only safe water. If in doubt, boil the water. ●Don’t go along the busy roads. When you have to use a road, keep as far over on the left as possible. ●Leave word at home or some other place as to where you are going and when you plan to return. ●On almost any hike, a map is a good idea. If going into a strange place, a detailed map is most useful. ●Take along a field guide on flowers, birds, rocks, or other subjects depending upon your interests. This can add greatly to the enjoyment and educational value of your hike. 68. The author thinks that hiking is especially valuable for _____. A. single person B. families C. old people D. everyone 69. The author mostly talks about _____. A. general rules for hiking in mountainous areas B. steps to be taken against dangerous animals C. general things that should be paid attention to in hiking D. all the things needed in hiking 70. The author suggests ________. A. leaving cameras at home B. drinking water from stream only C. carrying more clothes D. keeping away from heavy traffic
American programs gave about two billion dollars last year. But critics say the current system wastes money and delays the arrival of needed food. Under current law, United States government agencies have to buy American-produced food. And 75% of the aid must be carried on American ships. President Bush wants to change the system. His plan would provide food aid by buying crops directly from farmers in the developing world. Money in the form of cash would make up about 25% of the aid. The president is calling on Congress to support the project, saying it would support agriculture in developing countries. Last year, Congress reported that 65% of the money for food aid was spending on costs other than food. It said rising business and transportation costs had cut the average amount of food shipped over the last five years by 52%. Yet demand has grown. Critics among charity groups have called for changes to the system. CARE USA, a major aid group, said last year that it would not take part in the current system after 2009. But the system also has supporters among agricultural and shipping groups, and lawmakers in Congress. Supporters say the current system works well and that changing it could harm food-aid programs. The government passed similar laws last year. President Bush says he may reject the final law that reaches him because it would cost too much in its present form. He wants to end subsidy(补助金)payments to farmers who already earn a lot from their crops. Title: A Discussion of How to (1)___________US Food Aid

书面表达
Dear friends,
As we all know, we are what we eat. Therefore, it’s very important for us to form healthy eating habits. However, bad eating habits are still very common among us students. Some of us often go to school without breakfast; some like to have snacks; some others are particular about food; and still some eat or drink too much. All these bad habits will surely do harm to our health.
To keep fit, we should have various healthy diets, which generally include proper amounts of fish, meat, vegetables, fruit as well as main food. Besides, we’d better have meals at a regular time and proper amount. If we get into good habits of eating meals, it will benefit us a lot. In addition, good eating habits can protect us from all kinds of illnesses.
In my opinion, we should try to develop healthy eating habits to build up a strong body. After all, health is the most important in our life. Only in this way can we have enough energy to study better.
That’s all. Thank you!

Text 10
Now, here is news:
An early morning fire damaged the Historic Geller House today. It destroyed the third floor of the building, but fire-fighters saved the first and the second floors. There were a few elderly people living in the building at the time and they were carried to safety. The Geller House was built in 1718, and was used as a hotel for over 150 years. George Washington stayed here in 1782. The Geller’s owned the house until 1930’s. Then they sold it to the Mill’s family. Five years ago, it was made into a building for the elderly. Several fire departments were called to the scene. When we asked Fire Chief Andrew Barnes how the fire started, he answered that most likely a burning cigarette caused it. Chief Barnes promised a further investigation into the cause.
