Life on earth depends on water, and there is no substitute for it. The current assumption is that our basic needs for water-whether for drinking , agriculture , industry or the raising of fish will always have to be met. Given that premise (前提), there are two basic routes we can go: more equal access to water or better engineering solutions.
Looking at the engineering solution first, a lot of my research concentrates on what happens to almost entirely driven by the seasonal changes of the river-the pulse of the water. And the fact is that if you build a dam, you generally spoil the downstream ecology. In the past, such problems have been hidden by a lack of information. But in the near future, governments will have no excuse for their ignorance.
The engineers' ability to control water flows has created new kinds of unpredictability too. Dams in Africa have meant fewer fish, less grazing and less floodplain (洪泛区) agriculture- none of which were expected. And their average economic life is assumed to be thirty years. Dams don't exist forever, but what will replace them is not clear.
The challenge for the future is to find new means of controlling water. Although GM technology (转基因) will allow us to breed better dry-land crops , there is no market for companies to develop crops suitable for the micro-climates of the Sahel and elsewhere in Africa. Who is going to pay for research on locally appropriate crops in the Third World?
60. What's the main idea of this passage ?
A. The Challenge for the Future.
B. The engineering solutions to water resource mid their limitation.
C. The Basic Means of Controlling Water.
D. The Challenge for Developing Crops.
61. Which of the following statements is NOT true for meeting our basic needs for water ?
A. Water resource should be used more reasonably.
B. More dams should be built in river basins.
C. More wetlands should be protected from destruction.
D. More dry-land crops could be developed in Africa.
62. The author mentions all the problems caused by dams EXCEPT ________.
A. fewer fish B. less grazing land
C. less fanning land D. less floodplain agriculture
63. The last sentence probably implies that ________.
A. no one will invest in developing locally appropriate crops in Africa
B. researchers have no interest in developing dry-land crops
C. research on locally appropriate crops in the third world may be profitable
D. There is less water resource in the Third World

Say you are a 17th century construction worker who's worked long and hard to build a splen-did tower for the dead wife of your emperor.
Now say that the emperor orders your fingertips cut off so you can never build another one. Yes, that is the Taj Mahal, one of the most famous buildings in the world. And the tale behind the constructing is just as impressive(印象深刻的)as the building itself.
First, there is the emperor of northern India, Shah Jehan, also called the King of the World. In 1612, Shah Jehan married Mumtaz Mahal. Madly in love, they had 14 children over the next 20 years. But then sadness came. As Mumtaz was about to give birth to child number 14, she said she had heard her unborn baby cry out. It was a sign of death. And as Mumtaz lay dying, she asked Jehan to build a lasting memorial(纪念物)to celebrate their love.
When the heartbroken Jehan appeared 8 days after his wife's death, his people were shocked
to see that his coal-black hair had turned snow white.
Putting away his sadness, Jehan ordered his wife's dying wish carried out. More than 20,000
workers labored nearly 22 years to complete the construction. In 16S3,Jehan placed Mumtaz's re-
mains in the center under the building.
And then, son, Aurangzeb, murdered his brothers and took over the power from his aging father. Jehan lived the rest of his days-8 years, to be exact-imprisoned not far from the Taj Mahal. Jehan was only allowed to climb onto the top of his prison to see the timeless treasure from a distance. But never again would he be allowed to visit it-until he was buried next to his wife.
Today 25,000 people visit Taj Mahal each day. Though the reason for building the tower was a strange, sad story, those who see its breath--taking beauty are reminded of the happiness that inspired(激发……的灵感)its construction.
64. The first two paragraphs were written to show that ________.
A. the Taj Mahal is an unusual historic building
B. ancient Indian emperors were cruel
C. construction workers led a hard life in ancient India
D. India has some of the most famous buildings in the world
65. The Taj Mahal was first built as _________.
A. a prison B. a gift to Mumtaz
C. a memorial building D. a tourist attraction
66. We learn from the text that Mumtaz probably died in ________.
A.1626 B.1632 C.1634 D.1653
67. The underlined word "happiness" in the last sentence refers to ________.
A. the married happiness of the emperor and his wife
B. the great pleasure Jehan once found in exerting (v.发挥) his power
C. the happiness Jehan felt on completing the Taj Mahal.
D. the pleasure tourists experience when visiting the Taj Mahal

Georgia is the home state of corn bread, barbecue peach pie, and a whole lot of really fat people-21.1 percent of the state's population, to be exact, is obese (肥胖的). Ten years ago, the corn bread, barbecue, and peach pie were all just as good as they are now, but only 9.5 percent of Georgians were obese. What changed?
Obesity (肥胖症)is rising sharply in every age group, in every race, in both genders, and in every state of the union. The most obese region in the country remains the South-four out of five, but the rapid recent growth in obesity is nationwide, led by Georgia but followed by New Mexico, Virginia, California, and Vermont. In 1991, a little over 12 percent of the country was obese; by 1999, it was almost 20 percent.
Well, one thing that's changed is the portion sizes at fast food joints like McDonald's. In 1970, McDonald's offered one size of French fries; today that size is called "small". Eventually, it introduced a new size and called it "large"; today that size is called "medium". There's a new large size, but you don't have to settle for that-you can always "supersize it" and go a step beyond large.
Therefore, bigger portions don't necessarily translate into bigger meals. When portions were small, you could buy two orders of fries and eat them both; now that portions are enormous (巨大的), you can buy one super sized order and share it with your family.
People are eating more fries these days, and there comes a question: Do big meals cause obe-sity or does obesity cause big meals? Did McDonald's decide on a strange plan to fatten us up or did its market research reveal that bigger customers were demanding bigger portions? My money's on the latter. After all, McDonald's were just as greedy in 1970 as it is today, so if we had wanted super sizes back then, they would possibly have made it for us.
68. Which state has most obese peoplein U.S.A?
A. Georgia. B. Virginia. C. New Mexico. D. The South.
69. Paragraph 3 suggests that ________.
A. the size of French fries in McDonald's is small today
B. the size of French fries in McDonald's is medium today
C. the size of French fries in McDonald's is getting smaller and sm,tiler
D. the size of French fries in McDonald's is getting larger and larger
70. The end of the passage implied that ________.
A. McDonald's was not greedy in 1970s
B. in 1970s, people did not demand food for McDonald's as big as today
C. people did like the food of McDonald's in 1970s
D. McDonald' s wasn' t popular in 1970s
71. The passage mainly talks about ________.
A. Georgia is the home state of obesity
B. Americans are obese
C. why Americans are fat froth the food industry point of view
D. the size of the food in McDonald's has changed

British men are abandoning their stiff upper lips but still do not wear their hearts on their sleeves like Americans, a new survey showed. When it comes to strong emotion, the once serious British are now happy to shed tears quite openly.
"Thirty percent of all British males have cried in the last month. That is a very high figure," said Peter Marsh, director of the Social Issues Research Center which took the emotional temperature of Britain. "Only two percent said they could not remember when they last cried,"the head of the independent research group said. Long gone is the "No Tears-We're British" time when emotion was considered distinctly bad form, "In our survey of 2,000 people, very few people in their forties or fifties had seen their father cry. Now it is twice as many,"he told reporters. "Seventy-seven percent of men considered crying in public increasingly acceptable." Almost half the British men opened the floodgates over a sad movie, book or TV program. Serf-pity got 17 percent crying. Nine percent cried at weddings.
From the. days of Empire, the British have always considered themselves models of reserve (含蓄), laughing at "excitable foreigners" who show no self-control.
Marsh argued the divide was still there: "We have probably not caught up with the Americans
or the Italians when it comes to the actual display of emotions."
"But we are clearly changing. What we take as typical British reserve has significantly faded."
Women's battle for equal rights has certainly had an effect-both in the workplace and at home. "Men in their twenties or thirties are interacting with women on equal terms much more than a generation ago. They have to relate to the opposite sex. Women become more man-like and men become more female. That transfers into the work place too." Marsh said.
72. The underlined phrase wear their hearts on their sleeves means ________.
A. wear their sleeves properly B. express their feeling openly
C. put their heart into their work D. have a heart-to-heart discussion
73. The British used to think crying in public ________.
A. natural B. sensible C. unacceptable D. important
74. British men cried most ________.
A. over a sad film B. over self-pity
C. at wedding D. at graduation
75. In the last paragraph, the writer mainly discussed ________.
A. the women's struggle for equal rights B. one of the causes of the change
C. interacting between men and women D. Women's influence on men

Dear Jack,
How are you getting along these days?
I'm in Senior Grade 3 now, and I'm writing to ask for a favor.
Could you please help me to find a book on how to improve my English writing skills, such as how to organize an anticle and how touse the transitional words? Hopefully, this book will cover a wide range of topics, each with some proper examples. It would be better if it includes the topics and possible versions of the writings of the test papers for the past three years' College Entrance Examinations. Besides, I hope the book could be of the same size as our English textbooks, no matter how thick it could be. Of course, it should be of the latest edition for Senior Grade 2007. Ifit's possible, please post it to my school. (115 words)
Thank you very much, my dear friend. I wish l hadn't put you to so much trouble.
Yours,
Zhang Lin
