You might not know it, but there is something wonderful at your fingertips. You can make people happier, healthier and more hard-working just by touching their arms or holding their hands.
Doctors say that body touch is a kind of medicine that can work wonders. When people are touched, the quantity of hemoglobin, a type of matter that produces the red color in blood, increases greatly. This results in more oxygen reaching every part of the body and the whole body benefits. In experiments, bottle-fed baby monkeys were separated form their mothers for the first ten days of life. They became sad and inactive. Studies showed the monkeys were more probable to became ill than other babies that were allowed to stay with their mothers.
Human babies react in much the same way. Some years ago, a scientist noticed that some well-fed babies in a clean nursery became weak. Yet babies in another nursery were growing healthily, even though they ate less well and were not kept as clean. The reason, he concluded, was that they often had touches form nurses.
Experiments show that most people like being touched. And nearly all doctors believe touch helps to reduce patients’ fear of treatment. Of course there is time when a touch is not welcome. But even if we don’t like being touched, a smile can make us feel better. Smiling increases blood flow and starts the production of “happy brain” chemicals.
So let’s have a big smile and don’t forget to keep“in touch”.

Fish have ears. Really. They’re quite small and have on opening to the outside world carrying sound through the body. For the past seven years, Simon Thorrold, a university professor, has been examining fish ears, small round ear bones called otoliths.
As fish grow, so do their otoliths. Each day, their otoliths gain a ring of calcium carbonate. By looking through a microscope and counting these rings, Thorrold can determine the exact age of young fish. As a fish gets older, its otoliths no longer get daily rings. Instead, they get yearly rings, which can also be counted, giving information about fish’s age, just like the growth rings of a tree.
Ring counting is nothing new to fish scientists. But Thorrold has turned to a few direction. They’re examining the chemical elements of each otolith ring.
The daily ring gives us the time, but chemistry tells us about the environment in which the fish swam on any given day. These elements tell us about the chemistry of the water that the fish was in. It also says something about water temperature, which determines how much of these elements will gather within each otolith ring.
Thorrold can tell, for example, if a fish spent time in the open ocean before entering the less salty water of coastal areas. He can basically tell where fish are spending their time at any given stage of history.
In the case of the Atlantic croaker, a popular saltwater food fish, Thorrold and his assistant successfully followed the traveling of young fish from mid-ocean to the coast, a journey of many hundreds of miles.
This is important to managers in the fish industry, who know nearly nothing about his technology, fish scientists are now lending Thorrold their ears.
58. What can we learn about fish ears from the passage?
A. They are small soft rings. B. They are not seen from the outside.
C. They are only found on food fish. D. They are not used to receive sounds
59. Why does the writer compare the fish to trees?
A. Trees gain a growth ring each day. B. Trees also have otoliths.
C. Their growth rings are very small. D. They both have growth rings.
60. Why is it important to study the chemical elements of otolith rings?
A. The elements of the otoliths can tell the history of the sea.
B. Chemical contents of otoliths can tell how fast fish can swim.
C. We can know more about fish and their living environment.
D. Scientists can know exactly how old a fish is.
61. How would you understand“fish scientists are now lending Thorrold their ears”?
A. They are very interested in Thorrold’s research findings.
B. They want to know where they can find fish.
C. They lend their fish for chemical studies.
D. They wonder if Thorrold can find growth rings from their ears.

书面表达
Shall a senior school student
take a part-time job in holidays?
Dears friends,
Here are my points. We student of today have to fix our attention on our lessons, and as a result, know little of society. A holiday is the best time and the best chance to make up for that. Taking a part-time job is a good form of social practice. What is learnt in books and in class can’t have the same deep effect on us as what is learned through personal experience. In social practice, we can surely make progress in both knowledge and practical ability. Besides, taking a part-time job, we may get paid more or less to help our family. Thus, I will say a senior school student should take a part-time job in holidays, if possible, of course.
