Rick Stevenson, 16 years old, spends every minute he can on the mountain. He and his friends go snowboarding every weekend. "It's great," he says. "The winds are so strong, the boards, go 50 miles an hour." His friend Laura Field agrees. "No one goes skiing any more," she says, "That's for the old folks."
Rick and Laura are part of a new trend in sports. Its philosophy (宗旨) is to get as close to the edge as possible. And more and more young athletes are taking part in these risky (冒险的) activities called "extreme sports" or "X-sports".
In the past, young athletes would play baseball. Today, they want risk and excitement-the closer to the edge, the better. They snowboard over cliffs and mountain--bike down steep mountains. They wind -surf near hurricanes and bungee--jump from towers.
Extreme sports started as an alternative (选择余地) to more expensive sports such as golf. A city kid who didn't have the money to buy expensive sports equipment could get a skateboard and have fun. But now it has become a whole new area of sports, with specialized equipment and high levels of skill. There's even a special Olympics for extreme sports, called the Winter X-Games, which includes snow mountain biking and ice climbing.
What makes extreme sports so popular? "People love the risk," says Murray Nussbaum, who sells sports equipment. "City people want to be outdoors on the weekend and do something challenging. The new equipment is so much better that people can take more risks without getting hurt." An athlete adds, "Sure there's a risk, Once you go mountain biking or snowboarding, it's impossible to go back to bike riding or skiing. It's just too boring."
Now even the older crowd is starting to join in. Every weekend groups of friends in their early 30s get together. During the week they work as computer programmers in the same office. On Sundays they rent mountain bikes that cost $2,000 each and ride down steep mountains together.
Extreme sports are certainly not for everyone. Most people still prefer to play basketball or watch sports on TV. But extreme sports are definitely gaining in popularity. "These sports are fresh and exciting. It's the wave of the future." Says Nussbaum.
81. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Rick Stevenson. B. People's Love for Risk.
C. X--Sports. D. The Wave of the Future.
82. It is clear from the text that extreme sports are .
A. exciting but risky B. popular but old
C. special but dangerous D. inexpensive but challenging
83. Generally speaking, are unfit for extreme sports by inference from the text.

What's your dream vocation? Watching wildlife in Kenya? Boating down the Amazon? Sunbathing in Malaysia? New chances are opening up all the time to explore the world. So we visit travel agents, compare packages and prices, and pay our money.
We know what our vacation costs us. But do we know what it might cost someone else? It's true that many poorer countries now depend on tourism for foreign income. Unfortunately, though, tourism often hams the local people more than it helps them.
It might cost their homes and lands. In Myanmar, 5,200 people were forced to leave their homes among the pagodas(佛塔) in Bagan so that tourists could visit the pagodas.
Tourism might also cost the local people their livelihood and dignity. Local workers often find only menial(卑微的)jobs in the tourist industry. And most of the profits do not help the local economy. Instead, profits return to the tour operators in wealthier countries. When the Maasai people in Tanzania were driven from their lands, some moved to city slums. Others now make a little money selling souvenirs or posing for photos.
Problems like these were observed more than 20 years ago. But now some non - government organizations, tour operators and local governments are working together to begin correcting them. Tourists, too, are putting on the pressure.
The result is responsible tourism, or "ethical tourism." Ethical tourism has people at its heart. New international agreements and codes of conduct can help protect the people's lands, homes, economies and culture. The beginnings are small
though, and-the problems are complex.
But take heart. The good news is that everyone including us, can play a part to help the local people in the places we visit. Tour operators and companies can help by making sure that local people work in good conditions and earn reasonable wages.
They can make it a point to use only locally owned hotels, restaurants and guide services. They can share profits fairly to help the local economy. And they can involve the local people in planning and managing tourist.
What can tourists do? First, we ask tour companies to provide information about the conditions of local citizens. We can then make our choices and tell them why. And while we're abroad, we can:
* Buy local foods and products, not imported ones.
*Pay a fair price for goods and services and not bargain for the cheapest price.
*Avoid showing off wealth.
*Ask before taking photographs of people .They are not just part of the landscape!
Let's enjoy our vacation and make sure others do, too.

The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.
She said, “Hi, girl! My name is Rose. I’m 87 years old. Can I give you a hug?”
I laughed and enthusiastically(热情地)responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant squeeze.
“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked. She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel!”
“No seriously,” I said. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.
“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.
Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.
At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I’ll never forget what she taught us.
“We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only two secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor everyday. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die!” she said.
“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn 20 years older. If I am 87 years old, and stay in bed for a year, and never do anything, I will turn 88. Anybody can grow older. But every minute counts for young men,” she added.
“The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”
She concluded her speech by courageously singing “The Song of Rose”. She challenged each of us to study the lyrics(歌词)and live them out in our daily lives.
At the year’s end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.

90. Rose delivered the speech ______.

D. a nine-year-old is as old as a 87-year-old if he doesn’t do anything

Proverbs are quite common in spoken English. We do not normally put them in a composition or letter. Sometimes it is helpful if you know what common proverbs mean. Here are a few examples:
1)"Once bitten, twice shy. "If a dog bites me, I shall be twice as careful in future when I see it. This proverb is also used to apply to many things and not only to dogs. If you have been cheated at a shop, you will not go to the same shop again.
2)"A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. "If I am a hunter, trying to catch birds, it is better to catch one bird than to see two birds in a bush but not be able to catch them. Thus this means that what you have already got is better than the chance of being able to get something bigger in future.
3)"Too many cooks spoil the broth (soup)."When too many people do something, they get in each other's way and do a job.
4)"To pour oil on troubled waters. "is to try to calm things down. Oil is lighter than water. If a ship is in trouble at sea, another ship may come to help it. The second ship can send small boats to rescue people. However, it may first pour oil on the sea to make the sea less rough.
5)"Don't be a dog in a manger (槽)"means "Don't be selfish. "In a stable (马房), the manger is the place where the horse's food is put. Sometimes a dog will sleep in the manger and bark when a horse comes to get its food. The dog does not want to eat the hay in the manger but it will not let the horse eat it.
6)"He is sitting on the fence." means that somebody will not say whether he is in favour of a plan or against it. He is sitting on a fence between two opposing sides, perhaps waiting to see which side will win.
7)"He who pays the piper calls the tune. "A piper is a musician. The man who employs or pays a musician can say what tunes the man will play. Thus this means that if a man provides the money for a plan, he can say how it will be carried out.
8)"You can't get blood out of a stone." means that you cannot get something from a person who has not got any of the things you want. e. g. you cannot get a million dollars from a poor man.
92. Peter had a bicycle which was much too small for him but he did not want to let his younger brother ride on it. His mother was angry and said to him: .
A. You can't get blood out of a stone B. Don't be a dog in a manger
C. The early bird gets the worm D. Don't be a horse in the manger

Have you ever seen any students whose trousers hang so low that you can see their underwear (内裤)? What do you think of that? Fashionable? Some of today's teenagers are big fans of such a look. But recently this trend has been at the centre of an argument in Italian middle schools.
The headmaster of a school in central Italy has asked students to stop wearing low-rise jeans (低腰牛仔裤) that expose underwear and parts of the body. His request came after a class trip, when he saw one boy's baggy trousers slide (滑) to his feet. He pointed out that this way of dressing is not suitable for school.
But in Italy, a nation that takes fashion very seriously, the suggestion caused a debate among parents, teachers and students. The issue is whether the head teacher's request will limit students' freedom — or whether dress in Italian schools is too casual (随意的).
A parents' group praised the move in favour of good taste, while others advised schools to stop worrying about fashion and fix up old school buildings.
"We do not want to kick fashion out," the headmaster explained. "But extremes (极端) of fashion like this are not right in school." Many other schools have now requested that their students also stop wearing such trousers.
Most students have simply ignored (忽略) the request. Ludovica Gaudio,14,wore extremely low trousers exposing orange underwear in class. It was cold, so she wore a matching orange scarf (围巾).
Another 14-year-old said she should probably respect the request, simply for practical reasons. "I don't really feel comfortable in those sort of jeans", said Sarah Lattanzi. "In winter, when dressed like that, it's quite cold and I am afraid my stomach will ache."
97. What led to the argument in Italian middle schools?
A. Students' craze for fashions. B. Clothes that are too exposing.
C. Students ignoring dress codes (着装规则). D. Students' underwear.
98 Which of the following supports the headmaster's request?
A. Fashion should be taken seriously.
B. Fashion should not be followed in school.
C. Students should have their freedom in choosing what they wear.
D. Students should be encouraged to have good taste in clothes.
99.The argument against the headmaster's request is that ______.
A. schools should pay attention to things more important than students' clothes
B. fashion should not be followed in school
C. dress in Italian schools is too casual
D. low-rise jeans can do harm to youngster's health
100. The purpose of this story is to ______.
A. show Chinese students that wearing very fashionable clothes in school is under attack in other countries, too
B. show that dress code is necessary even in a country like Italy
C. tell us that a debate started in Italian middle schools over the way students dress in school

ONE POSSIBLE VERSION:
Good morning, dear friends. Welcome to our school. Now please allow me to introduce you to some of our school rules here. As high school students, firstly, we are expected to be neatly dressed when at school. Secondly, it must be made clear that we should never be late for class or leave school before it is over. The school is a place for us to live and study in, so we must keep it clean. Lastly, when you are walking on the road, please remember to keep to the right, and, if you want to go to school by bike, you must have a bicycle-permit.
Thanks.
