We were standing at the top of a church tower. My father had brought me to this spot in a

small town not far from our home in Rome. I wondered why.

"Look down, Elsa," Father said. I gathered all my courage and looked down. I saw the

square in the center of the village. And I saw the crisscross (十字形) of twisting, turning streets

leading to the square. "See, my dear," Father said gently. "There is more than one way to the

square. Life is like that. If you can't get to the place where you want to go by one road, try another."

Now I understood why I was there. Earlier that day I had begged my mother to do something about the awful lunches that were served at school. But she refused because she

could not believe the lunches were as bad as I said.

When I turned to Father for help, he would not interfere. Instead, he brought me to this high tower to give me a lesson. By the time we reached home, I had a plan.

At school the next day, I secretly poured my luncheon soup into a bottle and brought it home.

Then I asked our cook to serve it to Mother at dinner. The plan worked perfectly. She swallowed

one spoonful and sputtered, "The cook must have gone mad! "Quickly I told what I had done,

and Mother stated firmly that she would take up the matter of lunches at school the next day!

In the years that followed I often remembered the lesson Father taught me. I began to work

as a fashion designer two years ago. I wouldn't stop working until I tried every possible means to

A person has been badly injured in a car accident. It is necessary to give him a blood

transfusion because he has lost a great deal of blood in the accident. However, special care must

be taken in selecting new blood for him. If the blood is too different from his own, the transfusion

could kill him.

There are four basic types of blood: A, B, AB and O. A single test can tell us a person's blood type . Everybody is born with one of these four types of blood. Blood type, like hair color and height , is inherited from parents. Because of the substances contained in each type, the four

groups must be transfused carefully. Basically, A and B cannot be mixed. A and B cannot receive

AB, but AB may receive A or B. O can give to any other group; so it is often called the universal

donor. For the opposite reason, AB is sometimes called the universal recipient领受者). However, because there can be so many reactions in transfusions, patients usually receive only salt or

plasma (血浆) until their blood can be matched as exactly as possible in the blood bank of the

hospital. In this way, k is possible to avoid any bad reactions to the transfusion.

There is a relationship between your blood type and your nationality. Among the Europeans,

about 42 percent have type A while 45 percent have type O. The rarest is type AB. Other races

have different percentage. For example, some American Indian groups have nearly 100 percent

type O.

46. Which of the following diagrams shows the correct relationship in blood transfusions?

47. Usually, a person who has been injured and lost too much blood should be given a blood

transfusion

A. after he has a good rest B. after he receives salt or plasma

C. right after the accident happens D. before there are so many reactions

48. If the blood is too different from the injured, the transfusion

A. can help him greatly B. could save him C. could kill him D. can injure him

49. The writer suggests that the third most common blood type among the Europeans is

A. B B.A C. AB D.O

50. The passage mainly tells us that

A. there is only one type of blood in a person's body

B. a person's blood type is decided by hair and height

C. a person's blood type can be changed into another

D. there are four basic types of blood in a person's body

C

Much of the world does have electricity, though, and electricity makes using the Internet

possible. Now that so many have Web access; you might have noticed that people don't write

letters to each other very often. But that doesn't mean they have stopped keeping in touch. "Key

pals," who use a computer keyboard and e-mail account instead of a pen and paper, still continue

the pen pal tradition today.

E-mail and handwritten letters have different advantages. With e-mail, your pen pal can

receive your note almost instantly(即刻地), and you can attach digital photos. Letters take longer

to arrive, but you can include stickers, pictures, or drawings.

Maybe you want to know more about what having a pen pal is like before you jump into the

experience. If so, there are plenty of books that can give you a taste of different pen pal adventures. Look for them at a bookstore or library.

There are things to remember when communication with pen pals, especially in the digital

age: Make sure to share all letters and e-mails with your parents so they know you are safe. If

something seems fishy, stop writing letters. Never meet a pen pal in person unless a grown-up is

with you.

And, of course, have fun! Your pen pal could become your new best friend. Or a pen pal

relationship could bring you closer to someone you already know. With a pen pal, you can have

your own taste of far-away places, someone to share your own discoveries with, and the adventure of opening your mailbox to find a letter in it just for you.

51.Why don't people write letters to their pen pals so often?

A. Because they don't care much about their pen pals.

B. Because they have stopped keeping in touch with their pen pals.

C. Because they have used e-mails in place of traditional letters.

D. Because many of their letters don’t reach their pen pals on time.

52. Which of the following statements in NOT mentioned in the second paragraph?

A. Pen pals can receive your e-mails instantly.

B. Digital photos can be attached to e-mails.

C. Letters can enclose pictures or drawings.

D. Letters need stamps, while e-mails save the postage.

53. Before making a pen pal, you'd better

A. surf the Internet to feel different pen pal adventures alone

B. look for some information in the books at a library or bookstore

C. buy a lot of books on how to make pen pals online

D. go and ask your teachers' advice

54. The underlined word" fishy" ( in paragraph 4) probably means"

A. tasting or smelling like a fish B. seeming bad or dishonest

C. different from what is normal D. seeming unusual or exciting

55. When communicating with a pen pal, you should

A. keep all the pen pal's letters and e-mails in private

B. meet him/her with one of your classmates

Possible version:

Dear Jia Qi,

Very glad to have received your letter. Now I’ll tell you about students’ taking the part-time jobs in Britain. In the UK, any secondary student over 15 can get a part-time job in his spare time. But they can work no more than three hours a day or 18 hours a week during the school year, and they are not allowed to work after 7: pm.

In my opinion, taking a part-time job is beneficial, for first of all, teenagers may gain some working skills, such as how to fill out an application, how to do well in an interview and how to get along with co-workers and bosses. What’s more, taking a part- time job offers us a chance to learn to deal with our money properly. Above all, we may not only feel more confident when facing difficulties, but also learn to solve problems more independently , and therefore develop a sense of responsibility for our work and study .

Looking forward to your letter.

Best wishes.

Yours,

Li Hua

读写任务

One Possible Version:

A severe snow storm hit South China around the Spring Festival , keeping many people from returning home. Yet different kinds of help were offered to help them go through the hard time.

This reminds me of my experience, which I am quite proud of.

On May 12, an earthquake, the worst and largest in the history of China since liberation, hit Wenchuan county, Sichuan Province, causing thousands of deaths and severe destruction. Hearing about the news, I decided to do as much as I can to help the local people. I told my classmates about it and then we decided to promote a donation activity among our school. Teamed up with others from the Students’ Union , we put up a notice telling everyone about it. The news spread quickly. The next morning, all the students in our school joined us. Not only did they donate clothes, but also the money they saved. Even our teachers spoke highly of what we did and supported us by donating a lot of their money for the people in Sichuan with the hope that it could help them out.//////I am proud of what I did. As a middle school student, I think I am more than willing to give a hand to those in trouble. I can help my classmates with their school work; I can help the blind cross the street ; I can give my seat to the elderly. Helping others is a virtue. Only when everyone is always ready to offer help will our world become more harmonious.
