Ⅲ.阅读理解
I was pretty happy to see Henry even though life in America had changed him a great deal. First he gave me a huge, American-style hug that nearly choked me to death. Then we started to talk. During our discussion, I was shocked by the expressions he used and his gestures. The thing that shocked me the most, even though I had prepared for it, was his free way of talking. Every time he wanted something, he would either ask for it himself or get it without my permission. Although I understood we were good buddies, I still felt strange. Another thing that surprised me was Henry’s ideas about beggars. One day after coming across some, Henry said to me: "Those beggars don’t deserve our coins for they are no more than selling their dignity at a low price." Henry told me that beggars in America normally "do" something like playing the guitar to "earn" money instead of begging, so that they keep their dignity. Well, I have never associated beggars with something like dignity or self-respect. Maybe Henry’s opinion is right in the States. But what if I saw an old woman in shabby clothes, who had probably suffered from a hard life? I don’t think we should stand by and not do anything then. Now Henry has gone back to the States. But he left much for me. That’s the absolute American style. Nowadays in China lots of teenagers speak highly of the American free and passionate way of dealing with things. They put hip hop CDs on their shelves instead of Chinese classical music. They are open-minded as they would be in the US. I do appreciate American style and am interested in this great country that is full of magic. But I know that I am Chinese. Every day I have to go to a Chinese school and get on with my Chinese buddies. This is my life. American culture, opinion and ways of talking? I can take it or leave it. 31. Henry’s ______ shocked the writer most. A. expressions B. idea about beggars C. free way of talking D. gestures 32.Which statement is NOT true? A. Henry lived in America for a long time. B. Henry tended to regard his friends’ supplies as his. C. Henry looked down upon the beggars for not "doing anything". D. Henry’s lifestyle made the writer think much about his own. 33. Which of the following best explains the underlined word "associate"? A. think about B. look down upon C. connect in mind D. blame without thinking 34. In your opinion, which of the following that Henry did deserved the writer’s appreciation? A. American style hug B. Think nothing of beggars. C. Take things without permission. D. None of above 35. We can conclude that the writer____. A. admires American style but feels it too far away from his own life B. envies Henry and dreams to be just like him some day
C. hates American style because he can never enjoy it himself D. dislikes those Chinese teenagers who worship American style
