You have been badly injured in a car accident. It is necessary (必须) to give you a blood transfusion (输血) because you lost a great deal of blood in the accident. However, special car must be taken in selecting new blood for you. If the blood is too different from your own, the transfusion could kill you.
There are four basic (基本的) types of blood; A, B, AB, and O. A simple test can make sure of a person's blood type. Everybody is born with one of these four types of blood. Blood type, like hair color and height, is received from parents.
The four groups must be transfused carefully. A and B cannot be mixed. A and B cannot receive AB, but AB may receive A or B. O can give to any other group; therefore, it is often called the universal donor (万能血型). For the opposite reason, AB is sometimes called the universal recipient. However, because so many reactions (反应) can happen in transfusions, patients usually receive only salt of plasma (liquid part of blood) until their blood can be matched (相配) as exactly as possible in the blood bank of a hospital. In this way, it is possible to prevent the transfusion from any bad reactions.

You may have read an interesting science-fiction story which told about a group of men and women who got captured by the giant inhabitants of another planet. These giants imprisoned (监禁) the human beings. They could not decide whether their prisoners were intelligent beings or not. In the prison were a large number of mice. One day one of the prisoners got bored and made a small cage into which he put one of the mice to keep it as a pet. On seeing this, the giants immediately began to treat their prisoners with more respect because they recognized that they were intelligent beings like themselves. They said,"Only animals with intelligence put other animals in cages."
This story makes the reader think about the whole subject of penology (刑罚学). What makes some men imprison others? Does it do any good to put our fellowmen in prisons? Has society any alternative to imprisonment if it wants to protect itself? Are prisons a necessary part of the penal (刑罚) system?
A thoughtful penologist reflects on questions like these. He is an expert in the penalization of the wrong-doer and society turns to him for answers to such questions. The usual reasons given for the imprisonment of wrong-doers are three:punitive (惩罚性的), protective and remedial (补救的).
