A sunflower is a sunflower. A mobile phone is a mobile phone. But can you combine the two to do something for your local environment? As early as next year it may well be possible. When you have finished with your mobile phone you will be able to bury it in the garden or a plant pot and wait for it to flower.
A biodegradable (生物可降解的) mobile phone was, this month, introduced by scientists. It is hoped that the new type of phone will encourage consumers to recycle. Scientists have come up with a new material over the last five years. It looks like any other plastic and can be hard or soft, and able to change shape. Overtime it can also break down into the soil without giving out any toxic chemicals. British researchers used the new material to develop a phone cover that contains a sunflower seed. When this new type of cover turns into waste, it forms nitrates (硝酸盐). These feed the seed and help the flower grow. Engineers have designed a small transparent (透明的) window to hold the seed. They have made sure it only grows when the phone is thrown away. “We’ve only put sunflower seeds into the cover so far. But we are working with plant experts to find out which flowers would perform best. Maybe we could put roses in next time.” Said one scientist. As phone technology is developing so quickly people are constantly throwing their mobiles away. This means manufacturers are under pressure to find ways of recycling them. Some 650 million mobile phones have been sold this year. Most of them will be thrown away within two years, adding plastic, heavy metal and chemical waste to the environment. A biodegradable cover can offer some relief for nature, according to the scientists. “The seed is released and the flower grows in the pot so you don’t have to concern yourself with the phone when you have finished using it,” said Kerry Kirwan. She leads the research team, which is based at the University of Warwick in Britain.
68. After you have finished using the new type of mobile phone, _______.
A. the sunflower seed will come out and flower wherever you throw it
B. the phone cover will break down easily in the soil you bury it in
C. it will be recycled by the manufacturers

69. Which of the following is wrong about the cover of the new type of phone?
A. It can provide useful fertilizer for the sunflower seed after the mobile phone breaks down.
B. It looks like normal plastics but it can break down.
C. It can serve as the storage for the sunflower seed.
D. It makes sure the seed only grows after the phone is thrown away.
70. The new type of phone can relieve its burden on the environment mainly ______.
A. because of the material of its cover
B. because of the sunflower seed
C. because no toxic chemicals are involved in its production
D. because you bury it in the soil after you finish with it
71. We can infer from the story ________.
A. the new type of mobile phones is already on the market
B. the new type of mobile phones will sell extremely well
C. recycling mobile phones is increasingly important to the environment
E. other flowers may be used in the new type of mobile phones

Technology has been an encouragement of historical change. It acted as such a force in England beginning in the eighteenth century, and across the entire Western World in the nineteenth. Rapid advances were made in the use of scientific findings in the manufacture of goods, which has changed ideas about work. One of the first changes was that other forms of energy have taken the place of human power. Along with this came the increased use of machines to manufacture products in less time. People also developed machines that could produce the same parts for a product: each nail was exactly like every other nail, meaning that each nail could be changed for every other nail. This means that goods could be mass production, although mass production required breaking production down into smaller and smaller tasks.
Once this was (lone, workers no longer started on the product and labored to complete it. Instead, they might work only one thousandth of it, other workers completing their own parts in certain order. There is nothing strange about this manufacturing work by today's standards. Highly skilled workers were unable to compare with the new production techniques, as mass production allowed goods of high standard to be produced in greater number than could ever be done by hand. But the skilled worker wasn't the only loser, the common workers lost too. Similar changes forced farmer away. The increased mechanization (机械化) of agriculture freed masses of workers from ploughing the land and harvesting its crops. They had little choice but to stream toward the rapidly developing industrial centers. Increasingly, standards were set by machines. Workers no longer owned their own tools, their skill was no longer valued, and pride in their work was no longer possible. Workers fed, looked after and repaired the machines that could work faster than humans at greatly reduced cost.
72. In this passage, which of the following is NOT considered as a change caused by the use of scientific findings in the production of goods?
A. Other forms of energy have taken the place of human power.
B. The increased exploitation of workers in the 19th century.
C. The increased use of machines to make products in less time.
D. The use of machines producing parts of the same standard.
73. The underlined word this in the first paragraph refers to ____
A. the use of scientific findings
B. the practice of producing the same parts for a product
C. the human power being replaced by other forms of energy
D. the technology becoming the encouragement of historical change
74. According to the writer, highly skilled workers ______
A. completely disappeared with the coming of the factory system
B. were dismissed by the boss
C. were unable to produce goods of high standard
D. were unable to produce fine goods at that same speed as machines
75. According to the passage, what did the farmers have to do with the coming of mechanization of agriculture?
A. Many of them had to leave their farmland for industrial centers.
B. They stuck to their farm work.
C. They refused to use machines.
D They did their best to learn how to use the machines.

April. 17th Sunday Fine
This morning, after I finished all my homework, I went to the People’s Park together with my classmate Mary to fly a kite. We got a very nice kite, and it was such a lovely day, so we were sure to have a lot of fun.
I began to fly the kite. Once it went up into the sky, I began to run very fast, in the hope that it would go higher and higher. Then suddenly I felt something wrong. Looking up into the sky, we were disappointed to find that the kite had got broken. In no time the broken kite and rope fell over me. What a fool! I sat on the grass, feeling rather ashamed of what I had done.
Then Mary comforted me, saying “Now, you know what makes a kite fly high. It’s patience and skills.” Yes, I’ve learned a good lesson today.

M: Do you have everything now?
W: No, I still have to get some eggs and fruits.
Text 2
M: It’s so hot today that I can’t work. I wish there was a fan in the library.
W: So do I. I’ll fall asleep if I don’t get out of this unpleasantly warm room.
Text 3
M: How could anyone survive this accident?
W: They were in luck. There were 3 men in the truck and 2 women with a child in the car, but no one was badly hurt.
Text 4
M: It’s cold today. You should put on your jacket or you’ll catch cold.
W: I can’t believe summer is over and fall is already here.
Text 5
W: John seems so serious. I’m afraid of talking to him.
M: That’s his outside; he is kind-hearted inside.
W: How do you know?
M: He’s been teaching me for two years.
Text 6
M: May I help you?
W: Yes. My son is graduating from college next week, and I’d like to be getting him a nice gift.
M: What kind of gift are you interested in?
W: Well, I usually spend about $ 20 on a gift. Do you have anything nice for the price?
M: How about a pen and a notebook?
W: No, his father gave him that last week.
M: Well, then would he like a basketball?
W: No, he doesn’t go in much for sports, but likes music.
M: Then you could give him a recorder.
W: That’s a good idea. I’ll take it.

W: Excuse me. Are you going home? I want to get some information about the traffic problem in this city. Can I ask you some questions? It won’t take much of your time.
M: Yes, of course.
W: Good. Uh…how do you usually get to work?
M: By bus.
W: How far is your work from your home?
M: About four kilometers. My work stop is just outside my company.
W: How long does it usually take you?
M: Oh, about 35 minutes. My work starts at 9:00. I need 20 minutes to get things ready.
W: Um…What time do you leave home?
M: Around five past eight.
W: Did you arrive on time today?
M: No, I didn’t. The traffic was terrible. I didn’t get to my office until five past nine.
W: Do you think the traffic is a problem in this city?
M: Yes, it’s a serious problem.
W: That’s all. Thank you very much.
M: You’re welcome.

W: Look. Here’s a job that might interest you.
M: What is it? Are you sure? The last job interview you sent me off to was a disaster.
W: Well, look. It says they want a sales manager, and it looks like…it’s a big international company. That’d be good. You might get to travel.
M: What kind of company is it, though?
W: Um, let’s see. Yes, it’s a clothing company that seems to bring in clothes from abroad. That’s unusual, isn’t it? What else?...They say that the pay is really good. And oh, look! They give you a car to travel around. Gosh! That’s not bad, is it?
M: Um, do they say anything about experience?
W: Um, let’s see. No, they want someone young and energetic. Oh yes, they want graduates, so that’s OK…you’ve been to university. Now what else? Let’s see.
M: There must be some trick.
W: No, the only thing is that you have to travel, but then that’s what the company car’s for. Oh, and you have to be able to get on well with other people because it says you have to be good on a team.
M: Um, perhaps I’ll have a closer look at that one.
Text 9
M: What’s it like living in America?
W: Well, I’m surprised at the number of different ethnic group there.
M: What exactly do you mean?
W: I thought that Americans were, well, American and spoke English. But when I got there I found people from all over the world.
M: Can you give me some examples?
W: Yes. There are a lot of people from Central America who speak Spanish. Then there are a lot of black people. The first blacks were brought as slaves from Africa. They worked mainly in the South. But now they live all over the country.
M: Any others?
W: Yes. There are a lot of Jews. Many of them traveled to the States in the 1930s when it was no longer safe for Jews to live in Europe.
M: What other ethnic groups did you notice?
W: There are a lot of people from Eastern and Central Europe and also from Ireland. A lot of Irish traveled to the States in the 1840s when the potato harvests in Ireland failed.
M: Any others?
W: Yes. There are lots of Greeks and lots of Chinese. I also met some Indians, or Native Americans. They were the first people to live in America before the European settlers arrived.
M: Wow, it sounds like you can meet people from almost any country in the USA!
W: Yes, you can. And you can eat food from all over the world!

Good morning, my name is Marsha and I’m a senior in the Math Department here at Madison. Today Greg and I will be taking you around to a few places you’ll be visiting a lot. Does everyone have a copy of a map of the college? You should really keep this with you for the first couple of weeks, at least until you’ll become familiar with the buildings and landmarks. You sure wouldn’t want to miss any classes this early in the term. Today we will visit some of the most important places. First, we’ll go to the register’s office where you will sign up for your classes. So if you haven’t seen your advisor yet, you can wait in the commons outside while the others get their class schedules. You have to come back here on your own later. Next, we’ll go to the library. I think you’ll be pretty impressed with the real books collection. And finally, we’ll go to the cafeteria where you will probably spend a lot of time socializing at least until your first exams are scheduled. The number of the room for your classes will be on the schedule you’ll get from the register, and it will be up to you to find those rooms yourselves. So, if there are no questions we’ll start the tour now.
