A man once said how useless it was to put advertisements in the newspapers.“last week, ” said he, “my umbrella was stolen from a London church. As it was a present, I spent twice its worth in advertising, but didn't get it back.” “How did you write your advertisement?”asked one of the listeners, a merchant. “Here it is, said the man, taking out of his pocket a slip cut from a newspaper. The gentleman who finds it will receive ten shillings on leaving it at No. 10 Broad Street.” “Now,” said the merchant, “I often advertise, and find that it pays me well. American Classroom Customs
1. If the teacher asks a question, you are expected to give an answer. If you do not understand the question, you should raise your hand and ask the teacher to repeat the question. If you do not know the answer, it is all right to tell the teacher that you do not know. Then he or she knows what you need to learn.
2. There is no excuse for not doing your homework. If you are absent, you should call your teacher or someone who is in your class and ask for the assignment. It is your responsibility to find out what assignments you have missed. It is not the teacher's responsibility to remind you of missed assignments.
3. You must not be absent on a test day. If you are seriously ill, call and let the teacher know you will not be there for the test. If your teacher allows make-up tests, you should take the test within one or two days after returning to class. Serious illness is the only reason for missing a test.
4. Be on time! It is considered rude to be late. Also, it bothers other students. If you must come in late, be sure to do it quietly. Have your books and papers out of your bag before you come into the room. Then go to your seat and sit quietly. In the U.S. it is not necessary to knock before you enter the classroom. Most of the ELC teachers will give you a low grade if you are often late.
5.In America, you should call your teacher by his or her last name, not “teacher”.Also you should use Mr., Miss, Ms. or Mrs. before the last name (such as Mrs. Smith or Mr. Jones). This is considered polite. The teacher will tell you his or her preferred title.
6. It is considered impolite in the U.S. to eat, drink or chew gum during class. This is reserved for the break. Also, removing one's shoes in the classroom is not polite.
7. If you must leave during class, do so quietly. There is no need to ask the teacher's permission. However, leaving the class for something other than an emergency is not acceptable.(Getting a drink or sharpening your pencil is not considered an emergency.)
8.It is not acceptable to put up any sign, announcement or advertisement without first getting permission from the school office.
9.Books, backpacks, lunches—anything that belongs to other people is considered private and should not be moved or tampered with.

China blasted its fourth unmanned craft into space on Monday in what is likely a final test before sending its first astronaut into orbit around earth, state media said.
The Shenzhou IV, or “Divine Ship,” took off from its launch center in the northwestern province of Gansu early Monday morning and had already settled into its course around Earth, the official Xinhua news agency and newspapers reported. “The successful launch of the Shenzhou IV has laid a solid foundation for China to send Chinese astronauts into space,” the China Daily quoted an official at the Beijing Aerospace Command and Control Center as saying. Like its predecessors, the craft will circle Earth once every 90 minutes. The vessel, which boasts a complete system needed for manned flight, will fly in space for a few days before landing.
China’s space program is a test of national pride as the country, growing fast after two decades of market-oriented reforms, seeks a place on the world stage alongside great powers. China aims to become the third nation in the world capable of putting people in space. The Soviet Union first accomplished the feat in 1961, with the United States following the next year. The country started its manned flight program in 1992, the Xinhua reported, adding astronauts had entered the Shenzhou IV to train for missions for the first time. Xinhua quoted Su Shuangning, a leading official for the manned flight program, as saying Chinese astronauts, all with fighter pilot backgrounds, were absolutely capable of making their maiden voyage to outer space.
9. Which is NOT true about “the Shenzhou IV” according to this report?
A. It’s Chinese fourth unmanned spacecraft launched into space.
B. It is likely to be a final test before launching a manned craft.
C. It was successfully launched early Monday morning.
D. It did not boast a system needed for manned flight.
10. The Last sentence in bold implies all of the following but _________.
A. The leading official is quite sure that China is capable of sending manned crafts into space.
B. The astronauts who will take the first trip into space were picked out among the fighter pilots.
C. Chinese astronauts have made several voyages to outer space before.
D. Su Shuangning was the leading official for the manned flight program.

Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is one of the largest cities in the world. It is also one of the world’s most modern cities. Twice this century, the city was destroyed and rebuilt. In 1923, a major earthquake struck the city. Thousands of people were killed and millions were left homeless as buildings collapsed and fires broke out throughout Tokyo. It took seven years to rebuild the city. During World War II, Tokyo was destroyed once again. As a result of these disasters there is no old Tokyo remaining in the downtown area.
After the war, people of Tokyo began to rebuild their city. Buildings went up at a fantastic rate, and between 1945 and 1960, they city’s population was more than doubled. Because of the Olympic Games held in Tokyo in 1964, many new stadiums, parks and hotels were built to accommodate visitors from all over the world. As a result of this rapid development, however, many problems have arisen. Housing shortage, pollution, and waste disposal have presented serious challenges to the city, but the government has begun programs to answer them. II. 单项选择
