Ouchida's house turned out to be a horrible dream. When she and her engineer husband married a few years ago, they built a $ 100,000,three-bedroom home in California. Tightly sealed to prevent air 1eak,the house was equipped with double-paned(双层玻璃的)windows and several other energy-saving qualities. Problems began as soon as the couple moved in. However,Priscilla's eyes burned. Her throat was often dry. She suffered from headaches and could hardly sleep. It was as though she had suddenly developed a strange illness.
Experts finally find the cause of her illness. The 1evel of formaldehyde(甲醛)gas in her kitchen was twice the largest amount allowed by federal standards for chemical workers. The source of the gas? Her new kitchen cabinet and wall-to-wall carpeting.
The Ouchidas suffered the effects of indoor air pollution, which is not given enough attention partly because of the nation's drive to save energy. The problem itself isn't new. "The indoor environment was dirty long before energy saving came along," says Moschandreas, a pollution scientist at Geomet Technologies in Maryland, "Energy saving has worsened the situation in some cases."
The problem appears to be more troublesome in newly constructed homes rather than old ones. Back in the days when energy was cheap, home builders didn't worry much about unsealed cracks. Because of such leaks, the air in an average home was replaced by fresh outdoor air about once an hour .As a result, the pollutants caused by most households seldom built up to dangerous level.
56. It can be learned from the passage that the Ouchida's house_____.
A. is well worth the money spent on its construction
B. is almost faultless from the point of energy saving
C. failed to meet energy saving standards
D. was designed and constructed in a scientific way
57. What made the Ouchida's new house a horrible dream?
A. Lack of fresh air. B. Poor quality of building materials.
C. Gas leakage in the kitchen. D. The newly painted walls.
58. Why didn't people care about cracks in the past?
A. Because indoor cleanness was not emphasized.
B. Because energy used to be inexpensive.
C. Because environmental protection was not taken into consideration.
D. Because they had to build their houses in that way.

Smile , when making an introduction.
Every day we meet people in a number of business and social situations. And the way we meet and greet them creates an impression. It's important to do so in a proper way, no matter whether you are introducing yourself to someone ,or introducing two people to each other. To keep you aware of this, we have gathered tips on how to make a proper introduction.
☆Always stand when making an introduction.
When you are seated and someone comes up to greet you ,make the effort to stand up. By doing this, you show respect for yourself and for the other person.
☆Always maintain eye contact while making an introduction.
Many people are not aware of the value of this simple action. When you make eye contact you are giving a confident image.
☆Always introduce a person of lesser authority to one of greater authority. The most important thing to remember is to say the most important person's name first. For example ,when introducing your supervisor to a job candidate, you would give your supervisor's name first." Bob Jones, may I introduce Susan Lee, who has just graduated from ABC University?"
☆In a situation where rank is unimportant ,an introduction is based on sex and age .A man is presented to a woman and younger woman to an older woman.
What if you find yourself in a situation where you have forgotten the other person's name? Start with a handshake and reintroduce yourself .By doing this ,you will usually cause the other person to do the same.
However, if the other person does not take your suggestion, it is OK simply to apologize and let the person know that you cannot remember her or his name. This is not the ideal situation, of course ,but it does happen to all of us. The other person should be forgiving.
59.The article gives you advice on____.
A. how to make a self-introduction
B. how to make a proper introduction
C. how to leave a good impression on people
D. how to greet people in social situations
60.According to the passage ,people will think you are _________if you don't make eye contact with them.
A. not honest B. not confident C. shy D. unfriendly
61.What should you do when you introduce a new worker to your boss?
A. You should not give your boss' name.
B. You should give the new worker's name first.
C. You needn't give your boss' name.
D. You should give your boss' name first.
62.If you forget the other person's name, you'd better___.
A. ask him/her directly
B. apologize first and then ask him/her
C. shake hands with the person and reintroduce yourself
D. consider his age first

Language learning begins with listening. Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later starters are often long listeners. Most children will "obey" instructions some time before they can speak, though the word "obey" is hardly accurate as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child. Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gesture and by making questioning noises.
Any attempt to study the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves as particularly expressive as delight, pain, friendliness, and so on. But since these can't be said to show the baby's intention to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This self-imitation leads to deliberate imitation (模拟)of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech.
It is a problem we need to get our teeth into. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation and it is clear that what a child means by a word will change as he gains more experience of the word. Thus the use at seven months of "mama" as a greeting for his mother can not be dismissed as meaningless word simply because he also uses it at other times for his father, his dog, or anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people for himself. I doubt, however, whether anything is gained when parents take advantage of this ability in an attempt to teach new sounds.
63.Before children started speaking______________________.
A. they need equal amount of listening
B. they need different amounts of listening
C. they are all eager to cooperate with the adults by obeying spoken instructions
D. they can't understand and obey the adult's oral instructions
64.Children who start speaking later______________________.
A. may have problems with their listening
B. probably do not hear enough language spoken around them
C. usually pay close attention to what they hear
D. often take along time in learning to listen properly
65.A baby's first noise is _________________________.
A .an expression of his moods and feelings
B. an early form of language
C. a sign that he means to tell you something
D. an imitation of the speech of adults
66.The problem of deciding at what point a baby's imitations can be considered as speech __________________________________.
A. is important because words have different meanings for different people
B. is not especially important because the changeover takes place gradually
C. is one that should be properly understood because the meaning of words changes with age
D. is one that should be completely ignored because children's use of words is often meaningless
67.The speaker implies__________________________.
A. parents can never hope to teach their children new sounds
B. children no longer imitate people after they begin to speak
C. children who are good at imitating learn new words more quickly
D. even after they have learnt to speak, children still enjoy imitating
D
"It takes an entire village to raise a child." That's an old proverb that is being quoted more and more often these days. And I'm pleased about that.
Today, more and more schools are reaching out to involve parents, community members and businesses to help shape a child's future.
Parents need to be involved in their children's education in many ways. Helping children with homework and studying, going on a field trip, teaching a craft(手工艺)or coaching a child's sports team are all great ways to be involved with your child's education. And don't forget to communicate with teachers — they need and respect your input. Studies show that children learn schools function more and better when parents and schools work together. It's important to stay in touch with your child's education all through his or her school career.
Communities can help children create and achieve new goals. Help with homework, read to a child, coach a children's team, or provide and build self-esteem(自尊心). Kids need role models and advisers can be role models by sharing their experiences and wisdom.
Businesses can also help shape our children's future. Invite a class from your local school to visit your workplace. You may be providing a glimpse that opens a new world of possibilities. Show students what goes on during a typical day. Give a mini course for students: how to use a computer; how products are made; how machinery works. You may have a developing electrician, teacher, nurse ,or even a newspaper reporter on your hands.
It really does take an entire village to raise a child. So share the responsibility and the joy, bringing a child to his or her full potential(潜能).
68.The implied advice in the proverb "It takes an entire village to raise a child." is that __________________________.
A. All the people in a village should give food to a child.
B. Schools parents, and other organizations should share the responsibility of shaping a child's future.
C. Children should be brought up in the village where they were born.
D. Schools should be set up in the village where a child was raised.
69.The text was written mainly for______.
A. parents and members in organizations
B. teachers and students
C. newspaper reporters and developing electricians
D. education experts and government officials
70.Students can get developed in practical working skill through_______.
A. parental involvement B. community activities
C. business training D. school teaching
