二、完形填空(共20小题,每小题1分)

Now I had not thought that I would have to go down into the pit with the snakes in order to 31 them, and so I was wearing the strong sort of clothes. I 32 this to my friends, and they very 33 lent me their trousers and shoes, which were quite thick and strong. So, as I could think of no more excuses, they tied the 34 round my waist and started to 35 me into the pit.

Just before I landed at the bottom I 36 up and told my friends to stop lowering me. I wanted to 37 the ground that I was going to land on, to make sure there were no snakes on the 38 . The area being clear, I shouted to them to lower away, 39 at that moment two things happened.

First, the light went out; second, one of the shoes which I had 40 from my friend, and which were too large for me, came off. So there was I, standing at the 41 of a ten-foot–deep pit, with no light and one shoe on one foot, surrounded by seven or eight deadly Gaboon snakes. I had never been more 42 . I had to wait in the dark, without daring to move, 43 my friend pulled the lamp out, relit it and lowered it into the pit again.

With plenty of 44 and both shoes on, I felt much 45 , and set about the task of catching the snakes. This was really 46 enough.

I had a forked stick in my hand, and with this I came near each reptile, pinned it down with the fork and then 47 it up by the back of the neck, and put it into my snake bag. What I had to 48 out for was that while I was busying catching one snake, another might move round 49 me and I might step back on it. However, it all passed off without 50 , and at the end of half an hour I had caught eight of the Gaboon snakes.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中选出最佳选项。

A

The volcano is one of the most surprising forces of nature. Maybe you have seen pictures of these “fireworks” of nature. Sometimes when a volcano erupts, a very large wall of melted rock moves down the side of a mountain. It looks like a “river of fire”. Sometimes volcanoes explode, throwing the melted rock and ashes high into the air. But where does this melted rock come from?

The earth is made up of many layers(层). The top layer that we see is called the crust. Under the crust are many layers of hard rock. But far, far beneath the crust where rock is so hot, it is soft. In some places it even melts. The melted rock is called magma. Sometimes the magma breaks out to the surface through cracks(爆裂声) in the crust. These cracks are volcanoes.

Most people think of mountains when they think of volcanoes. But not every mountain is a volcano. A volcano is simply the opening in the earth from which the magma escapes. The hot magma, or lava as it is called, cools and builds up on the surface of the earth. One thousands of years, this pile of cooled lava can grow to be very, very big. For example, the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro, is a volcano. It towers more than 16000 feet above the ground around it.

51. Which is the correct order of the layers of the earth (beginning with the top layer)?

A. Crust--hard rock—magma--soft rock.

B. Crust—hard rock—soft rock—magma.

C. Volcano—cracks—magma—crust.

D. Magma—soft rock—hard rock—crust.

52. Which words in the passage have the same meaning as “melted rock”?

A. “Volcano” and “explode”. B. “Volcano” and “magma”.

C. “Crust” and “hard rock”. D. “Magma” and “lava”.

53. The best title of the passage should be ___________.

A. The Melted Rock B. The Volcano

At church that day, Eddie listened silently while the rest of the family sang along with the music. As soon as he returned home, he flung himself at the little piano. He seemed angry at it as he produced only nose, so his mother put it in the closet. Two weeks later, returning from a church service once more, Eddie uttered his first words, “Mommy, piano, piano.” This time he started to play every hymn(圣歌) he had heard in church. All his family members looked at each other in surprise. “Eddie plays the piano,” they say.

Friday, January 30—Health officials are worried about a flu. But this isn’t the same kind of flu that might have kept you out of school last week. It’s the bird flu, which has spread to 10 Asian countries.

The disease affects birds such as chickens and ducks, and can also spread to humans. So far, only people who have handled chickens have been infected. Although there is no sign of the disease spreading from human to human, experts are not ruling out that possibility.

The disease first infected humans in Hong Kong in 1997, but appeared in Italy over 100 years ago. This year, at least 10 people have died from the disease, and health experts fear it could become worse. If the virus continues to grow at a fast speed, it could become a bigger problem than SARA, which killed about 800 people last year.

To prevent the situation becoming worse, infected chickens and ducks throughout Asia are being killed. China has already killed tens of thousands of birds. Scientists are also working as hard as they can to invent a vaccine(疫苗) to protect people. But it will probably not be ready for at least another six months.

“We have a window of chance here to deal with disease,” said Dr. Klaus Stohr of the World Health Organization. “With SARS we said we wanted to put things back in a box; here we want to keep things in the box. It hasn’t come out yet. We have a good chance of controlling this.”

57. According to the expert, bird flu _____________.

A. is unlikely to spread between humans

B. is possible to spread between humans

C. has been spreading between humans

D. has only affected school children

58. From what we learned from this passage, people _________.

A. did not know what bird flu was until 1997

B. have known about bird flu more than a century

C. did not realize the seriousness of bird flu until after 800 has died

D. knew nothing about bird flu until six months ago

59. “With SARS we said we wanted to put things back in a box; here we want to keep things in the box.” How do you understand the above sentence in the last paragraph?

A. SARS is something outside a box while bird flu is inside a box.

B. When fighting against SARS, people put their equipment inside a box. When fighting against bird flu, people do not need to take their equipment out of the box.

C. People want to put bird flu under control before it spread while with SARS people tried to control it after it had spread.

D. Boxes are tools people use to control both bird flu and SARS.

60. What do you think is the best title for the passage?

A. Bird Flu Spread B. Health Official’s Worry

C. Terrible Diseases D. Asia Hit by Bird Flu

D

Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it is painful? This might be called laziness, but an expert has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle(周期).

This time of day when you have the most energy is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the morning, for others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so. You can’t change cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you will begin to move power and speed and work better at your low point.

Get up with a slow start which saves your energy. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Keep away from the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do regular work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy for your sharper hours.

61. The underlined phrase “at its peak” most probably means ____________.

A. at the lowest peak B. at the highest point

C. at the usual time D. in the right condition

62. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Everyone has the same energy cycle.

B. The more slowly you get up, the more energy you can save.

C. One’s energy peak must be in the morning if one gets up early in the morning.

D. Though a person can’t change his energy cycle, he can make his life fit it better.

63. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. People can explain why people reach their peaks at different hours of the day.

B. Getting up slowing helps to keep one’s energy for the day’s work.

C. It can save energy to get clothes ready before going to sleep.

D. Children have energy cycle, too.

E

Some people faint if they see others hurt. Some people faint in crowds. Others faint if they are in a room that is hot and stuffy(闷热的).

If a person faints while standing, lay him down. If his face is pale, lift his feet. If he is sitting down when he faints, place his head between his knees, loosen any tight clothing that might keep him from breathing easily. If possible, place wet cloth on his forehead.

64. People may faint if they _________.

C. see something unexpected
