A British family used to be made up of mother, father and two children, but in recent years there have been many changes in family life. Some of these have been caused by new laws and others are result of changes in society.

Relationships within the family are different now. Parents treat their children more equally than they used to, and children have more freedom to make their own decisions. The father is much busier in bringing up children, often because the mother goes out to work. As there are more places to go for amusement and sports, and people have more money to spend, each of the family members has more chances to take part in activities outside the home. Although the family holiday is still an important part of family life (usually taken in August, and often abroad), many children have holidays away from their parents, often with a school party or other organized group.

People say that children today grow up more quickly. The law sometimes makes this possible. Look at the information below:

YOUNG PEOPLE AND THE LAW

Age 13 may be given a part-time job

Age 14 allowed in bars but not to drink alcohol

Age 15 considered a “young person” and not a “child” according to the law

Age 16 school leaving age, can leave home, marry with parents’ permission (not needed in Scotland), and buy beer with a meal

Age 17 can drive a car or motorbike

Age 18 of majority—can vote, get married without parents’ permission, drink in pubs.

56. Which of the following statements show the old way in family life?

A. The family holiday is usually taken in August, and often abroad.

B. People are able to pay for the activities outside the home.

C. Mother doesn’t take an active part in raising children.

D. Parents treat their children rather equally.

57. At the age of 16, a young person ______.

A. can drink alcohol with a meal B. can ride a motorbike

C. can get a full-time job D. must continue to receive education

58. In Scotland, if parents don’t agree, 17-year-old young people ______.

A. cannot get married B. cannot drive a car

C. can vote D. can get married

59. The changes in the British family life have been caused ______.

A. by the fact that children grow up more quickly B. by the freedom of children

C. partly by new laws D. partly by the family holiday abroad

B

The America cigarette companies are worried about that the anti-smoking campaign is catching fire and that the U.S. government may issue stronger regulations about the use of tobacco.

Many government and private buildings have “No Smoking” regulations, in airplanes, on trains and at cinemas. Golf courses are seriously thinking of keeping out smokers, so are schools, shopping malls and even football field.

So where do people go to fill their lungs with nicotine? The government is working on it.

One suggestion is that the government set aside a piece of land somewhere in the United States where smokers could go when they want a cigarette. Yellow Stone Park has been on the list, but many people don’t agree because they fear that second-hand smoking would make the bears there sick.

The Mojave Desert in California is also being studied, and so are Las Vegas Casinos.

The smokers were not too nervous about the government idea. They say they are not going to California just to light up. They have a right to smoke at home. To make life more pleasant for those who find it hard to give up smoking, the government is seriously thinking of getting somewhere for the smokers.

The officials in the government say they realize that they are bringing trouble to people by making them go so far away to blow smoke rings. But they just had to do this or to ban smoking in the entire country. Once everyone gets used to the idea, all will be better off soon.

The tobacco companies are fighting the idea like mad. They say nobody has proved that cigarettes are bad for you. They say, as a matter of fact, the doctors have proved that a cigarette saved a person’s life after that person was shot.

Other places under consideration are: the cold areas in Alaska, the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and the Whitewater River in Arkansas.

60. Smokers in the U.S. ______ to light a cigarette now.

A. find nowhere B. are not so free C. have a right D. have to travel a long way

61. The smokers are not too nervous about the government banning smoking, for they think ______

A. it is not a good idea B. it is still far away

C. they have right to smoke anywhere D. they may smoke at home

62. The tobacco companies don’t like the idea because they ______.

A. want to save persons’ lives B. wish smokers to stay at home

C. wish smokers to feel easy D. want to improve their cigarettes

63. Which is right about the writer’s opinion according to the passage?

A. He thinks the government should help the smokers to find a proper place.

B. None of the places in the passage is proper for the smokers.

C. The places are too far away for the smokers to light up their cigarette.

D. He supports the U.S government idea.

C

The big Town Hall clock was striking midnight when Frank began to cross the bridge. The dark night air was cold and slightly wet, and the street lamp gave little light.

Frank was anxious to get home and his footsteps rang loudly on the pavement. When he reached the middle of the bridge he thought he could hear someone coming near behind him. He looked back but could see no one. However, the sound continued and Frank began to walk more quickly. Then he slowed down again, feeling shame at having acted so foolishly. There was nothing to fear in a town as quiet as this.

Just then, he heard short, quick steps closely behind him. By the time he reached the other side of the bridge, he could almost feel someone at his heels(脚后跟). He turned round and there stood a man in a large overcoat. A hat was pulled down over his eyes and very little of his face could be seen. Frank said something about the weather, trying to sound friendly and calm. The man did not answer but asked rudely where Oakfield House was. Frank pointed to a big house in the distance and the stranger continued his way.

Then Frank wondered why the stranger had wanted to find Oakfield House at such an hour.

He knew that the people who lived there were very rich. Almost without realizing what he was doing, he began following the stranger quickly. The man was soon outside the house and Frank saw him look up at the windows. A light was still on and the man waited until it went out. When about half an hour had passed, Frank saw him climb noiselessly over the wall and heard him drop on the ground at the other side.

Now Frank realized what was going to happen. He walked quickly and silently across the street towards a telephone box on the corner.

64. Frank was feeling shame at ______.

A. having walked so quickly B. having made a big noise at midnight

C. having been afraid D. having been so anxious to go home

65. Frank said something about the weather to the stranger because ______.

A. he wanted to know what the weather would be the next day

B. he wanted to start a conversation

C. he was a very friendly person

D. he wanted to hide his nervousness

66. The man dressed in a large overcoat was ______.

A. very friendly B. not polite at all

C. a visitor to Oakfield House D. a police officer

67. What kind of atmosphere does the writer want to create in this passage?

A. Frightening B. Peaceful C. Lonely D. Quiet

D

A serious threat to farmers in many parts of the world is erosion. Erosion occurs if a large area of land is cleared of trees and is then badly treated by the farmers. The rain and winds may gradually (逐渐地) wash away, or blow away, much of the topsoil. When this happens, crops of wheat or corn become weaker and weaker until nothing grows well. If erosion continues, it will turn good land into a desert. In the past, when erosion appeared, farmers sometimes moved to a new place to farm. Sometimes they could not move, but continued to try to grow food in the unhealthy soil. This caused them to sink into poverty. Soon some people realized that there was little rich, fertile soil in the world. The government began to try to stop erosion. One of the first experiments to stop erosion began in the United States in 1933. the experiment was carried out in the area of the Tennessee River. Floods and bad farming in this area had ruined land that had once been rich. As a result, most of the people living around the Tennessee River were very poor.

The government built big dams across the river and stored the water for use during the dry season when there was no rain. The government workers also helped farmers to fertilize their soil and to learn new farming methods which could stop erosion. At the beginning, the farmers were not interested. But soon, good healthy crops began to appear on the land where new methods were used. Ten years after the extremely prosperous, the great success of this experiment had led to similar projects in the other parts of the world.

68. The underlined word “erosion” means ______.

A. the clearing of trees B. overuse of the land

C. the destruction of crops D. gradual loss of top soil

69. The passage tells us that erosion is a problem which ______.

A. first began in the United States B. occurs mainly in river areas

C. affects many parts of the world D. is becoming more and more serious

70. The main purpose of this passage is to tell people ______.

A. the importance of using new farming methods B. how erosion occurs

C. something can be done to prevent erosion D. the serious effects of erosion

第四节 书面表达

Dear Environmentalist,

After learning “the Environment” in Module 5 of Advance with English, I know a lot about the environment, now I would like to talk about the relationship between man and nature.

With the development of industry, pollution is getting more and more serious, destroying large areas of the world. At the same time, many plants and animals have died. In addition, many rivers are polluted by the industrial waste which is poured directly. As a result, people cannot have enough safe drinking water. What’s worse, this will have a lasting effect upon fish.

Apart from this, rubbish in cities is also a big problem. Large amounts of rubbish can be seen almost everywhere, making the air dirty and getting people sick.

In my opinion, we shouldn’t just think about how to develop the economy, overlooking the protection of the environment. Some measures must be taken to make sure a healthy environment and a stable economy go side by side.

In a word, as part of nature, man should try to get along well with nature. Only in this way can man benefit more from nature.

Yours,

Wang Zhengyi
