Jules Verne was born in 1828. He was neither an inventor(发明家) nor a scientist, but he read many books about science and wrote some exciting stories about the things which he thought that scientists and inventors would one day be able to do. Years later many of the things he wrote about really happened. At that time, his stories seemed like fairy tales(神话故事).
His most famous book is “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea” (A “league” is an old word which means about three miles). In those days submarines (潜艇) had not been invented(发明), but he wrote about an underwater(在水下的) ship very much like a modern submarine. The men of the submarine in this book had many strange journeys and found many strange things.

In “Around the World in Eighty Days”, Mr. Fogg planned to travel around the world in eighty days. This may seem easy for you today, but in those days there were neither planes nor cars. 书面表达参考答案:
My hometown is a beautiful place, which lies at the foot of the Dabie Mountain. A stream runs by in front of our village. Trees grow thickly on the hills.
Several years ago people began to destroy the trees to make farmland. They destroyed the balance of nature here. The soil was washed away when it rained. Sometimes the water in the stream was too dirty to drink.
Then people in my hometown realized the importance of keeping the balance of nature. They began to change the farmland back into forests on the hills. So the hills are green with trees again and water becomes cleaner and cleaner.
