In 1608 an Englishman whose name was Thomas Coryate visited Italy. He liked the
country and noted down every interesting thing he found. But there was one thing which he found more interesting than the others. In his diary Thomas wrote, “When the Italians eat meat, they use small forks. They do not eat with hands because, as they say, people do not always have clean hands.”
Before leaving for England, Thomas Coryate bought a few forks.
At home Thomas gave a dinner party to show the invention to his friends. When the
servants brought the steak, he took out a fork and began to eat like they did in Italy.
Everybody looked at him in surprise. When he told his friends what it was, they all
wanted to take a good look at the strange thing. All his friends said that the Italians were very strange people because the fork was very inconvenient.
Thomas Coryate tried to prove the opposite. He said it was not nice to eat meat with
one’s fingers because they were not always clean.
Everybody got angry at that. Did Mr Coryate think that people in England always
had dirty hands? And weren’t the ten fingers we had enough for us?
Thomas Coryate wanted to show that it was very easy to use the fork. But the first
piece of meat he took with the fork fell to the floor. His friends began to laugh and he had to take the fork away.
Only fifty years later did people in England begin to use forks.

New York State has passed the USA’s first state law banning motorists talking on hand-held cell phones(手机). The ban will begin the following November 1, although drivers caught using hand-held cell phones will be given only warnings during the first month.
First-time violators will face a $100 fine. A second time calls for a $200 fine and every violation after that will cost $500.
At least a dozen localities(地方) have established bans, starting in 1999; and 40 states have had bans proposed but not passed. At least 23 countries, including Great Britain, Italy, Israel and Japan, ban drivers from using hand-held cell phones.

“To think that I’m not going to use a cell phone when at the same time I can still use my laptop(膝上电脑), I still can read a paper, I can still change my pants(裤子) while driving 65 mph. I think there’s just something wrong.” An official said.

Although emailing is very convenient (方便的),there are a number of problems to be aware(意识到的) of. For example, many business people receive more than 100 emails every day. Because they must also make telephone calls, attend meetings, write reports and so on, they may not be able to spend much time reading and replying to emails.
It is necessary to keep your emails short and to the point.
Make sure that you have a suitable heading in the subject line so that the reader will want to read your message. Many emails are deleted unread because of the lack of time.
Make sure that you have given all the time and place of a meeting.
Do answer emails immediately and exactly. If you can not give the information requested, then reply with “Thanks for your message. I’ll get back to you asap .” Then make sure that you do!
Check your message carefully before sending.
Use the subject line to indicate(指出)what the message is about and then do not reply yourself in the text. Because emails already have the person’s name in the heading, it is not necessary to start your message with “Dear…”. Although the language in emails is often quite informal, writing in sentences and correct use of grammar and punctuation(标点), including capital(大写的) letters, is important. For example, “the meeting in Harbin on Monday 11th December” does not give a good impression (印象).
64. What do we get mainly from the text after reading?
A. Useful information about emails.
B. Ways of replying to emails.
C. Examples of writing emails.
D. Suggestions for writing emails.
65. The underlined word “asap” is an abbreviation(缩写) meaning of “ ”.
A. later B. early C. clearly D. quickly
66. When writing an email, you should do the following except .
A. keeping it short and informative.
B. writing the subject.
C. starting with “Dear…”
D. trying not to write sentences which are wrong in writing or grammar
67. The last example in the text doesn’t give a good impression because .
A. it is quite informal and careless in writing.
B. Readers cannot understand it at all
C. It pays no attention to punctuation and capital letters.
D. It gives readers wrong use on grammar and spelling
D
A good education should, among other things, train you to think for yourself. The old examination system does anything but that. What has to be learnt is strictly laid down by a syllabus(教学大纲) so the student is encouraged to memorize. Examinations do not motivate(激励) a student to read widely but to restrict (限制) his reading. They lower the standard of teaching. Teachers themselves are often judged by examination results and instead of teaching their subjects, they are reduced to training their students in exam techniques which they despise(鄙视). The most successful candidates(候选人) are not always the best educated; they are the best trained in the technique of working. The results on which so much depends are often nothing more than a subjective assessment(主观评价) by some anonymous(匿名的) examiner. Examiners are only human. They get tired and hungry; they make mistakes. Yet they have to mark in a limited amount of time. There must be many simpler and more effective ways of assessing a person’s true abilities. The examinations are only a profitable(有利可图的) business for the institutions that run them. The best comment on the system is that message recently appeared on the wall, “I were a teenage dropout and now I am a teenage millionaire.”
68. Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?
A. A good education trains you to think for yourself.
B. Examination system trains you to think for yourself.
C. The examination result sometimes is not very objective.
D. The examination system has a lot of problems.
69. The word “they” in the sentence “they are reduced to training their students in exam techniques which they despise” refers to .
A. the teachers. B. the students.
C. the examinations. D. the subjects.
70. What does the author think of the examiners?
A. They are very subjective. B. They are very responsible.
C. They are always very fair. D. They are very careful.
71. According to the passage, why do people still keep the examination system?
A. Because it trains the student to think for himself.
B. Because it motivates a student to learn more.
C. Because the exam’s result can judge a teacher’s ability.
D. Because some people want to make money through exams.
72. What can be concluded from the passage?
A. The examination result can show how good the education is.
B. Examination system enables a student to learn more knowledge.
C. The assessment by anonymous examiners sometimes cannot show a student’s ability.
D. We cannot find better ways of assessing a person’s ability than exams.
