三、阅读理解:(每小题2分,共40分)
A
“Meet the ancestors” is a truly fascinating book about what scientists have learned from several archaeological digs in the British Isles. The book focuses on nine sites, which range from the late Neolithic through the Middle Ages. Each of the states contains human remains, and the book explains what those remains can tell us about how our ancestors lived in ancient times.
What makes the book especially engaging is that it tries to show how these people would have looked when they were alive. Each chapter features either a portrait (often generated with the aid of computers) or a sculpture that puts flesh on dry bones. In one particularly striking case, the author tells the story of Bleadon Man, an Iron Age farmer who died nearly 2000 years ago. Using DNA from his bones, scientists were able to identify five people who were living in the same English farming village 2000 years later and who had DNA that was very similar to the ancient farmer—probably, but not certainly, these five are the farmer’s distant relatives. Then the scientists prepared a sculpture showing how the ancient farmer probably looked when he was alive. The sculpture was compared to one of the modern villagers with similar DNA—and, as Richards puts it, “from their faces they could have been brothers.” The picture that shows the descendant holding up the sculpture of his ancient forebear is worth the price of admission.
If you enjoy this book, you should also try Ian Wilson’s “Past Lives: Unlocking the Secrets of Our Ancestors,” which explores several of the same cases and a few besides.

C. It is confirmed that Bleadon Man and the five living farmers are relatives.
D. You can find some new cases about our ancestors in “Past Lives”.

The next morning, I got ready for school as usual. When the bell rang, the students came in. I greeted them first and then told them what we were going to do that day.
When I turned around to write on the blackboard, the class broke out a roar!
They laughed and laughed. They laughed so much, in fact, that I was afraid the headmaster would be into seeing all this.
I asked the class to stop, but the more I talked, the more they laughed. I decided to pay no attention to them and I continued to write on the blackboard. When I did this, they roared even more.
Finally, the teacher who had the room next to mine came in to see what all the laughter was about. When he came in, he started laughing, too!
“Good heavens,” I said. “Will someone please tell me what is so funny?’
“Oh, God,” said the teacher. “You have a brown sock to the back of your skirt!”

E-mail systems at thousands of companies and governemtn offices around the world were attacked by a virus called “Mellissa” that disguises itself as “important message” from a friend.
Even though there was a weekend warning, more than 50000 companies at about 100 places around the world have been attacked by the virus, computer experts said on Monday.
The virus began to show up last Friday and spread rapidly the next first workday by making computers send off dozens of e-mails containing the virus. Although the virus had no long-lasting damage to a computer, its effects were far-reaching.
Michael Vatis, a senior US official said military and government computers were damaged, along with thousands of the other institution’s systems.
The body of e-mail message says, “here is what you ask for---“once the user opens it, the virus digs into the user’s address book and sends out messages to the first 50 address. The reason why the virus spreads so rapidly is that you’re getting it from people you know and trust. Every year, more and more students become volunteers. The projects may be with their school, neighborhood, or town, but the work of all volunteers is important. Students find that there are many advantages to volunteering.
First, volunteering helps others. Many people complain about problems in our society. Volunteers are part of the solution to our problems! While it is easy to complain about things that are not right, the volunteer takes action rather than complaining. When a student spends time working at a retirement (退休) home, cleaning up a park, or teaching a younger student, the volunteer makes the world a better place.
Second, being a volunteer makes students feel good about themselves. When a student volunteer knows that his or her efforts have made someone else’s life better, the volunteer feels great. Students always hear people saying that everyone should care about other people. Volunteers make it happen. Although some volunteer work is long or tiring, student volunteers end the day knowing they did the right thing. Their parents, teachers, and the public are proud of them. Knowing they did the right thing makes them feel better, even if they are tired.
Finally, students learn that volunteering is fun. A group of students might volunteer to clean up a riverbed in early spring. It is fun to be with their friends, to enjoy the weather, and to picnic later in a beautiful, clean area. Other students might read to young children in a playgroup. It is fun to spend time with children and to have them smile and laugh. No matter what their ages or talents are, every student can be a volunteer. The work of student volunteers is a powerful force that makes the world a better place.
73. The tile of this passage is ________.

A. volunteering helps society as well as volunteers themselves
B. it is fun to spend time volunteering in a pre-school
C. some people complain instead of taking action
D. some volunteer work is long and tiring
75. According to the passage, how are volunteers different from other people?
A. They never complain. B. They always feel great.

One possible version:
I’m writing to tell you the discussion that has been held in our school about Super girls’ voice. Recently many people especially high school students have been fascinated by a singing competition “Super girls’ voice”, which was held by Hunan TV Stations.
Some students supporting it think highly of the competition. They think it has offered a wonderful stage to ordinary but well singing girls to show their singing talents in public, and encourages people to pursue their dreams. What’s more, they can also develop their sense of competing during competitions.
On the other hand, the others don’t agree with them. They think a series of competitions costs lots of time and money. As most of girls are still students who should concentrate on their study at present, taking part in it is not good for their further progress.
In my opinion, it is just a successful program, which has attracted lots of audience’s attention. But seeing a bunch of girls with passion try hard to realize their dreams in the competition, we are inspired to study harder to be “Super Girls” or “Super Boys” too, just as competitors.
Yours truly,
Li Lei
