Thousands of people have enjoyed watching the famous movie “The Sound of Music .”However, not everyone knows that the movie is about a real family, the Trapp Family . Even fewer people know that this family came to live in Vermont, in the town of Stowe.
The story of how that happened begins in Austria in the 1920’s. Georg von Trapp was a nobleman who had been a submarine (潜艇)captain in World War I. He had seven children—five sons and two daughters, but they had no mother to take care of them. Georg got a young student named Maria to come and help care for the children. Georg had intended to marry Princess Yvonne, but after Maria came, he fell in love with her. In 1927, he asked Maria to marry him and she accepted.
The Trapps had always enjoyed singing together at home. They met Father Wasner, and he became their musical director. After that, the Trapp family traveled all around Europe, singing to entertain the public in many countries. The Trapp Family Singers became famous.
In 1938, Nazi Germany took control of Austria. The Germans asked Georg to become a submarine captain again. Georg did not want to work for the Nazis, so he, Maria, and the children escaped from Austria and went to the United States. The Trapp Family Singers became very popular, especially their Christmas music. They gave concerts in many parts of the country. When the Trapps saw Stowe, Vermont, it reminded them of the beautiful mountains where they had lived in Austria. They decided to settle down in Stowe, where they built a house and opened the Trapp Family Music Camp.

From age eight to eleven, I attended a small school in Bath, England. It was a small school of four classes with about twenty-five children in each class according to(根据) age. For the most part, one teacher had to teach all subjects to the children in the class. However, sometimes the headmaster, Mr Ronald Broches, would come in which he was especially interested. He was a large man with a very happy nature. He had a sense of humor and would delight in telling the children small stories that would make us laugh. He was a very fair man and had a great influence on many of the children. In my own case , I found that he took great interest in me and he quickly found that I enjoyed puzzles(难题) . He would often stop me as I was going to class and take a piece of paper out of his pocket, often with a puzzle on it. The puzzles were usually mathematical or logical. As time went on, they slowly got more difficult, but I loved them. Not only that, they made me interested in math and problem solving that stays with me to this day. They also served to show me that intellectual(智力的) activity was rewarding when the correct answers were found, but perhaps more importantly it was great fun.
To this day, I can remember Mr Broches’ cheerful cry of "Well done!"whenever I got a problem right. The simple communication with a man whom I loved greatly has had a deep influence on my life. I shall forever be thankful that our paths crossed. Mr Broches died just two weeks after I had won the 1993 Nobel Prize in physiology(生理学) or Medicine. Unluckily, I had no chance to speak to him before he died. I learnt later that he heard of my success and I will always hope that he knew the deep influence he had made on my life.

London-“Everyone else has one!” Lucy declared to her parents, trying to get a mobile phone as a gift for her 14th birthday. Her parents gave in.
Curious to know how her daughter would use the phone, Jane Bidder, the mother, followed Lucy to the school bus in the morning. The bus seats 20, of whom half have a mobile phone. One rings and several adolescent owners fumble (摸索)with their bags.
Many parents have just come to realize that the mobile phone is no longer for traveling business- it is as likely to be found in school bags.
The mobile phone seems to have become something essential for today’s teens in Britain, according to a survey published last week, by NOP, a leading market research company in Britain. Research found that 66 percent of 16-year-olds now have access(接近;通道;利用的权利) to a mobile phone.
The mobile phone has been turned into a secret messaging service by teens users. When they are talking on the mobile, their parents are not able to eavesdrop on the second line.
The interview with 2,019 young people aged 7 to 16 found that they favor the text messaging services because they offer a secret way of keeping in touch. The days of secret notes in the classroom are dying out.
For example, “cul” means “see you later”; “lol” means “laugh out loud”; and “2nite” is the abbreviation(缩写) of “tonight”. All these are based on shortened phrases on the internet.

During the twentieth century there has been a great change in the lives of women. A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old and up. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and can be expected to live another thirty-five years and is likely to take paid work until sixty.
This important change in women’s life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school and took a full-time job. However, when they married their school-leaving age is sixteen. Many girls stay at school after that age, and though women marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born . Very many more afterwards return to fuller part-time work.. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage (婚姻), with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life.
