English as a Foreign Language
Who taught you to speak English ? Your parents, while you were a young child? Your teachers at school? Perhaps even the BBC as a grown-up. Whoever it was, somehow you have developed an understanding of what is rapidly becoming a truly global language.
There are now about 376 million people who speak English as their first language, and about the same number who have learnt it in addition to their mother tongue. There are said to be one billion people learning English now and about 80% of the information on the internet is in English.
Is this a good thing, or a bad thing? Should we celebrate the fact that more and more of us can communicate, using a common language, across countries and cultures? Or should we worry about the dangers of ‘ mono-culturalism’ , a world in which we all speak the same language, eat the same food and listen to the same music?
Does it matter if an increasing number of people speak the same language? On the contrary, I would have thought- although I have never accepted the argument that if only we all understood each other better, there would be fewer wars. Ask the people of India ( where many of them speak at least some English) and Pakistan ( the same situation with India)…
If we all speak English, will we then all start eating McDonalds burgers? Surly not. If English becomes more dominant(统治的), it will kill other language? I doubt it. When I travel in Africa or Asia, I am always surprised by how many people can speak not only their own language but often one or more other related languages, as well as English and perhaps some French or German as well.
When we discussed this on Talking Point a couple of years ago, we received a wonderfully poetic(有诗意的) email from a listener in Ireland. “ The English language is a beautiful language. Maybe it’s like a rose,” he said. “ But who would ever want their garden just full of roses?”
Well, I love roses, and I think they make a beautiful addition to any garden. But the way I see it, just by planting a few roses, you don’t necessarily need to pull out everything else. If more and more people want to plant English roses, that’s fine by me.
56. By saying “ Ask the people of India… and Pakistan” ( in paragraph 4), the author is trying to show that ______________.
A. speak the same language doesn’t necessarily bring peace
B. wars can destroy the relationship between two countries
C. English doesn’t kill other languages
D. English is widely used in the world
57. What does “garden” in the last two paragraphs stand for?
A. Language.
B. Family.
C. The world.
D. The earth.
58. This passage is mainly about _______________.
A. why English has become a global language
B. how many people in the world speak English
C. how people in the world learn English as a foreign language
D. whether we need to worry about English being a world language
B
Play is the principal(主要的) business of childhood, and more and more in recent years research has shown the great importance of play in the development of a human being. From earliest infancy(婴儿), every child needs opportunity and the right material for play, and the main tools of play are toys. Their main function is to suggest, encourage and assist play. To succeed in this they must be good toys, which children will play often, and will come back to again and again. Therefore it is important to choose suitable toys for different stages of a child’s development.
In recent years research on infant development has shown the standard a child is likely to reach, within the range of his inherited(继续的) abilities, is largely determined in the first three years of his life. So a baby’s ability to profit from the right play materials should not be underestimated. A baby who is encouraged and stimulated(刺激), talked to and shown things and played with , has the best chance of growing up successfully.
The next stage, from three to five years old, curiously knows no bounds. Every type of suitable toys should be made available to the child, for trying out, experimenting and learning, for discovering his own particular ability. Bricks and jigsaws(拼图玩具) and construction toys; painting, scribbling and making things; sand and water play; toys for imaginative and pretending play; the first social games for learning to play and get on with others.
By the third stage of play development----- from five to seven or eight years--- the child is at school. But for a few more years play is still the best way of learning, at home or at school. It is easier to see which type of toys the child most enjoys.
Until the age of seven or eight, play and work mean much the same thing to a child. But once reading has been mastered, then books and school become the main source of learning. Toys are still interesting and valuable, they lead on to new hobbies, but their significance(重要性) has changed--- to a child of nine years, toys and games mean , as to adults, relaxation and fun.

Greenland is a largest island in the world. It covers over 2,000,000 square kilometers. Most of it lies inside the Arctic Circle, and a huge sheet of ice covers 85% of it. Imagine that a map of Greenland is on top of Europe. Greenland stretches from London to the middle of the Sahara Desert. The ice sheet is more than 1.6 kilometers thick, and it never melts.
Along the sea coast, mountains rises from the sea. There are a few low trees in the southeast, but no forests. Snow covers everything in winter, but in summer very low plants cover the ground between the sea and the ice sheet. Norwegians were the first Europeans to see the island in 875AD, but no one visited it until 982. Three years later a few Norwegians went to live there. In 1261, the people in Greenland decided to join Norway. Norway and Denmark united in 1380. This union ended in 1814, and Greenland stayed with Denmark. Greenland is fifty times larger than Denmark, but it is still a part of this small country.
