Bend over, take a deep breath and drink some water for 15 seconds! This is just one of hundreds of tips you might get if you have the hiccups(打嗝). Hiccups are so mysterious. We really don’t know why they start and why they stop.

Everyone has a favorite cure for a case of the hiccups. Some people think that a good scare is necessary to get well. Others eat a teaspoon of sugar. Still others drink a glass of water with a knife in it.

An American man named Jack O’Leary claimed to have hiccupped 160 million times over a period of eight years. He tried 60,000 cures, but none of them worked. Finally he prayed to Saint Jude, the saint of hopeless cases, and his hiccupping stopped immediately.

It took a British plumber eight months to cure his hiccups. People from all over the world wrote him letters with suggestions for getting well. He tried them all, but the hiccups continued. Finally, he drank a “secret” mixture someone had sent him. By that evening his hiccups were gone.

Why did these cures work for these two men? No one really knows. But people who have studied many cases of hiccups have an idea. Hiccups usually go away if you believe in the cure.

60. What might be the best cure for hiccups?

A. special pills B. cold water

C. whatever you think will work D. a spoonful of salt

61. This story is mainly about _______.

A. how to get hiccups B. what makes hiccups happen

Hi there! I’m Crystal Collins, and I’m very happy to share some time with you. So, you want to keep fit, eh? Well, listen to me carefully. Together we can keep fit and healthy and be more successful. It’s easy. Everybody can do it, you hear? Just remember the five golden rules:

No. 1. Always wear loose and comfortable clothes when you are exercising. You need to feel comfortable and relaxed.

No. 2. You should always do some simple warming-up exercises first. To get your body ready for the real thing.

No. 3. Never try to do too much exercise too soon. Take it nice and easy now, you hear? There is no rush about this.

No. 4. Don’t forget to relax completely for about five minutes when you’ve finished your workout. You need to rest a little bit after you’ve been exercising.

And here is golden rule number five. Stop immediately if you feel any pain in your chest, throat, neck or head.

64. This passage very probably comes from ________.

A. a tape recording B. a teacher in the lab

C. a conversation D. a play

65. Which of the following is not included in the five golden rules?

A. Wear comfortable clothes

D

It seems that beauty and women are twins. You are joking? No, I am not. Observe for yourself. Ads on fashion flood TV screens, radio programs, magazines, newspapers, and the streets. Whether they have realized it or not, women are besieged (包围) by a sea of fashion. They are taught to think that without beautiful clothes they will grow old and lose their charm. So who dares to neglect dressing up at the cost of their appearance and youth? But I do not agree with the opinion that women have to show

their beauty through their looks. The richness of their minds proves to be more beautiful and attractive than their looks. A woman who has experienced many troubles and may be called "aunt" or "granny" can still maintain her beauty if she has such excellent qualities as knowledge, ability, a kind heart, great courage, concern for others, etc.

In addition, old and young, beautiful and ugly are relative concept. People who keep a young mind will never feel old. Curious about new things and eager to learn more, they keep up with the tide. Plainly dressed women may have a type of beauty that is pure and real. Reading and learning is the best way to keep one youthful Good books are fertile soil which can feed the flower of one's heart and looks.

68. According to the first paragraph, why are women caught by a sea of fashion?

A. Because they are rich.

B. Because they are taught to follow any fashion.

C. Because they don't dare to look attractive.

D. Because they think that they will look youthful and charming with beautiful clothes.

69. Which is more important to a woman in the author’s opinion?

A. Richness of one's mind. B. Looks.

C. Following the fashion. D. Wealth.

70. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

A. The richness of women’s minds proves to be more beautiful than their looks.

B. A woman who may be called "aunt" is no longer beautiful.

C. A woman who has experienced many troubles may still maintain her beauty.

D. It is not necessary for women to show their beauty through their beautiful clothes.

71. What is the best way for a woman to appear young according to the writer?

A. Dressing up. B. Reading and learning.

C. Feeding the flower. D. Making up.

Smile, when making an introduction.

Every day we meet people in a number of business and social situations. And the way we meet and greet them creates an impression. It’s important to do so in a proper way, no matter whether you are introducing yourself to someone, or introducing two people to each other. To keep you aware of this, we have gathered tips on how to make a proper introduction.

◎Always stand when making an introduction.

When you are seated and someone comes up to greet you, make the effort to stand up. By doing this, you show respect for yourself and for the other person.

◎Always maintain eye contact(接触) while making an introduction.

Many people are not aware of the value of this simple action. When you make eye contact you are giving a confident image.

◎Always introduce a person of lesser authority(权威) to one of greater authority. The most important thing to remember is to say the most important person’s name first.

For example, when introducing your supervisor(治理者,领导) to a job candidate(候选人), you would give your supervisor’s name first. “Bob Jones, may I introduce Susan Lee, who has just graduated from ABC University?”

◎In a situation where rank(等级) is unimportant, an introduction is based on sex and age. A man is presented to a woman and a younger woman to an older woman.

What if you find yourself in a situation where you have forgotten the other person’s name? Start with a handshake and reintroduce yourself. By doing this, you will usually cause the other person to do the same.

However, if the other person does not take your suggestion, it is OK simply to apologize and let the person know that you cannot remember her or his name. This is not the ideal situation, of course, but it does happen to all of us. The other person should be forgiving.

72. The article gives you advice on _________.

A. how to make a self-introduction

B. how to make a proper introduction

C. how to leave a good impression on people

D. how to greet people in social situations

73. According to the passage, people will think you are ______ if you don’t make eye contact with them.

A. not honest B. not confident C. shy D. unfriendly

74. What should you do when you introduce a new worker to your boss?

A. You should not give your boss’ name.

B. You should give the new worker’s name first.

C. You needn’t give your boss’ name.

D. You should give your boss’ name first.

75. If you forget the other person’s name, you’d better ________.

A. ask him/her directly

B. apologize first and then ask him/her

C. shake hands with the person and reintroduce yourself

D. consider his age first

One possible version:

Attention, please! I’m going to give you a summary of today’s discussion about whether we should go online in our spare time.

Most students think we can go online as much as possible in our spare time because we are free then. Through the Internet, we can gain plenty of the newest knowledge and the latest news at home and abroad. What’s more, network offers us a convenient way to communicate with each other. The Internet makes our lives outside class colorful and various.

On the other hand, a few students partly agree to this idea. Going online is part of our daily life but they suggest a time limit. They’ve found that more students are playing computer games instead of studying their lessons. There’re also a few students who are often absent from school for days to go online.

I think we should make proper use of the Internet.

That’s all. Thank you!
