第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 A Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. The lead story in tonight’s news concerns the fire which destroyed the major part of Columbia College at 4 a.m. this morning. In only five minutes, more than six hundred girls came out of their dorms to watch their college burn to the ground in the freezing December weather. Fortunately, there were no injures resulting from the fire. According to the college president, plans were already made to raise more than three million dollars to rebuild the college. A. In December. B. In March. C. In November. D. In October. 58. When the writer talked about the expected high temperature for Saturday, which of the following statements is true? B It is, everyone agrees, a huge task that the child performs when he learns to speak, and the fact that he does so in so short a period of time challenges explanation. Language learning begins with listening. Individual children vary greatly in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and late starters are often long listeners. Most children will “obey” spoken instructions sometime before they can speak, though the word “obey” is hardly accurate(准确的) as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child. Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gesture and by making questioning noises. Any attempt to trace(探索)the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves out as particularly indicative of(表示)delight, suffering and so on. But since these cannot be said to show the baby’s intention to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new sounds to their sound collection. This self-imitation(模拟)leads on to deliberate(深思熟虑的)imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech. 59.By “…challenges explanation” the author means that _________. A. no explanation is necessary for such an obvious phenomenon B. no explanation has been made up to now C. it’s no easy job to provide an adequate explanation D. it’s high time that an explanation was provided 60.The third paragraph is mainly about _________. A. the development of babies’ early forms of language B. the difficulties of babies in learning to speak C. babies’ strong desire to communicate D. babies’ intention to communicate 61.From the passage we learn that _________. A. early starters can learn to speak within only six months B. children show a strong desire to communicate by making noises C. imitation plays an important role in learning to speak D. children have various difficulties in learning to speak 62.The best title for this passage would be _________. A. How Babies Learn to Speak B. Early Forms of Language C. A Huge Task for Children D. Noise Making and Language Learning C 12 Park Garden, London SW1 30th March 2004 Miss S. Carter, Espana Holidays, 43 Market square, London SW 3Dear Miss Carter, Following my telephone conversation with you yesterday, we have decided that we would prefer to go to Malaga for our holiday rather than Granada. Of the hotels you suggested, we think that the San Carlos would suit us best. We should like to stay for a fortnight from the 23rd July. Our party will consist of myself, my wife Sheila, our eleven-year-old son, Timathy, and our 10-year-old daughter, Mary, and my sister, Mrs Anna Harvey and her two sons, Richard and Edward, aged 13 and 14. We shall, therefore, require two double rooms and a 3-bedded room for the boys. I think it would be more satisfactory for us to have half-board, as we are unlikely to be in for all meals, and we want to sample the local food. You said our flight would leave from Gatwick. Perhaps you would let me know how long it takes to fly to Malaga and the departure time. I understand that, if I should decide to hire a car, you can arrange for it to be at the airport for our arrival. I enclose the completed booking form and check to cover the deposit of £25 per person required at time of booking. I should be glad to receive confirmation of booking at your earliest convenience. Yours sincerely, Frank Simpson 63. Mary will most probably stay in the same room with _________. A. Frank Simpson B. Sheila C. Mrs Anna Harvey D. Timothy 64. How many rooms does Frank Simpson require? A. 2 B. 3 C. 4 D. 5 65. Espana Holidays _________. A. charge a booking fee of 25% B. require part payment on booking C. charge a deposit of £25 per family D. require travellers to book 8 weeks in advance 66. If Mr Simpson arranges to hire a car through Espana Holidays, he ________. A. will collect it at the Hotel San Carlos B. will be able to drive it from Malaga airport C. must pick it up at Granada D. must return it to Gatwick airport D In an age when technology moves faster than most can keep up with, a small group of people still remain in the time of old-fashioned letters. Frankly speaking, I was once certain that traditional letters could never be replaced by other means of communication. But a story about online communication changed my mind. An old man, who suffered a lot from Parkinson’s disease, was not able to talk clearly and could hardly write his name. Living totally alone, he managed to keep in touch with nearly all the members of his family. How did he achieve this? He clicked out words on his computer keyboard. I, therefore, managed to get an E-mail box as soon as the opportunity came. My life changed. E-mail, and all online communication, is something truly different. It has capabilities that few other products can match. E-mail is convenient. It takes less time with its fast speed and 24-hour connection. The slow postal service is no match. If you wouldn’t want to have a face-to-face talk with your manager, you might talk with him through E-mail even if you are in the same office. Naming all the good things about online communication is not easy. But wait. E-mail can be inconvenient. It can waste time and energy. Just think what may happen when you take a short vacation and return to find your E-mail box filled with 200 unread messages. You could easily spend half a day clearing junk ads. Then, online communication will keep us staying at our computer while it connects us to distant strangers. Once we throw ourselves into the machine, we may forget the human touches we once held so dear. I’m sure there is and always will be a place for the old-fashioned letter, phone call, and face-to-face meeting… even in the world of modern communication. As I listen to the sound of the modem(调制解调器), I was excited at stepping out to the outside world but, at the same time, I sensed a loss of control over something valuable in my personal life. 67.What is the most probable meaning of the underlined word “junk” in paragraph 7? A. Old and useless. B. New and useful. C. Short but valuable. D. Long but clear. 68.What caused the writer to become interested in E-mail and online communication? A. The sound of the modem. B. His own illness. C. The changing of his life. D. A sick old man’s experience. 69.What does the writer think of online communication? A. It should replace old-fashioned letters completely. B. It is perfect and always does good to you. C. It is extremely useful and convenient, but it may be inconvenient or even harmful. D. It does more harm than good. 70.According to the writer, traditional means of communication will never disappear because __________ . A. they are convenient and popular though they are slow. B. they help to keep the friendly relationship between people. C. most people cannot keep up with the development of technology. D. modern means of communication does too much harm. E Since 1989, Dave Thomas, who died at age 69, was one of the most recognizable faces on TV. He appeared in more than 800 commercials(商业广告)for the hamburger chain named for his daughter.”As long as it works,”he said in 1991,”I’ll continue to do those commercials.” Even though he was successful, Thomas remained troubled by his childhood. “He still won’t let anyone see his feet, which are out of shape because he never had proper fitting shoes,” Wendy said in 1993. Born to a single mother, he was adopted(收养) as a baby by Rex and Auleva Thomas of Kalamazoo in Michigan. After Auleva died when he was 5, Thomas spent years on the road as Rex traveled around seeking construction work. “He fed me,” Thomas said, “and if I got out of line, he’d beat me.” Moving out on his own at 15, Thomas worked, first as a waiter, in many restaurants. But he had something much better in mind. “I thought if I owned a restaurant,” he said, “I could eat for free.” A 1956 meeting with Harland Sanders led Thomas to a career as the manager of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant that made him a millionaire in 1968. In 1969, after breaking with Sanders, Thomas started the first Wendy’s Old Fashioned hamburgers, in Columbus, Ohio, which set itself apart by serving made-to- order burgers. With 6, 000 restaurants worldwide, the chain now makes $6 billion a year in sales. Although troubled by his own experience with adoption, Thomas, married since 1954 to Lorraine, 66, and with four grown kids besides Wendy, felt it could offer a future for other children. He started the Dave Thomas Foundation(基金会)for Adoption in 1992. In 1993, Thomas, who had left school at 15, graduated from Coconut Creek High School in Florida. He even took Lorraine to the graduation dance party. The kids voted him Most Likely to Succeed. “The Dave you saw on TV was the real Dave,” says friend Pat Williams.” He wasn’t a great actor or a great speaker. He was just Joe Everybody.” 姓名_______ 班级________ 分数_________ 71. What is the article mainly about? A. The life of Dave Thomas. B. The dream of Dave Thomas. C. The schooling of Dave Thomas. D.
