They target various English levels, from middle to professional and differ from other e-dictionaries with their specialized software for New Oriental Business English and New Oriental English Letters. E-dictionaries are becoming more and more popular among learners as a learning tool. In 2003, sales of e-dictionaries in China amounted to 1.5 billion yuan. By 2004, they were worth 2 billion yuan. Traditional e-dictionaries only provide a dictionary, their advantage being in their lightness. But consumers have come to demand more functions and “The New Oriental series is trying to meet the demand,” says Hu Min, CEO of the New Oriental Group. The New Oriental 3780 has New Oriental’s vocabulary software to help users remember new words for various tests like the TOFEL and IELTS. And it provides native speaker pronunciations. Its 8MB flash memory is greater than that of many e-dictionaries and provides more room for information. It also has 21 games. The New Oriental 3980 has more functions and a 32MB flash memory and MP3 player. The New Oriental V80N gives even more. In addition to the functions of the 3780 and 3980, it has a four-hour digital recording system and can download various information from the Group Sense website. In addition, you can edit Word /Excel documents and downloaded e-mails. The growing English education market attracted Group Sense and New Oriental Group to this joint venture. China has about 250 million English learners now, a figure that is increasing by about 20 million every year. 56. What makes the three newly-made e-dictionaries special? A. Their lightness. B. E-dictionaries are popular in China (B) It was nearly 10pm and I was still racking my brain in the newsroom of News Weekly for my latest story. I am not the only one staying there – it’s quite frequent that reporters and editors have to work late to give readers important, interesting news. During my four-month internship at News Weekly, I had such experiences repeatedly, but it was challenging, enlightening and enjoyable, since it was a good warm-up exercise for the world of English-language journalism. The editor there taught me everything that I have to know about news reporting in English: how to pick good topics, how to organize the story logically, how to proofread everything, and how to avoid putting myself into the story. News Weekly is a demanding publication when it comes to news topics and reporting. The people at the weekly want their stories to be fresh, readable and attractive. The demands are challenging and tiring, and the staff develop their skills. The demands placed on me were the motivation and reason I was willing to stay up late in the office. My communication skills also developed during my internship at News Weekly. Facing introverted or unfriendly people, especially when the reporting was investigative and negative, taught me how to turn a foe into a relatively friendly interviewee. My internship at News Weekly was really a learning experience. I hope that I can return to the newsroom someday and enjoy writing and communicating with the responsible and energetic professionals there. 59. The writer of the article was ____ with News Weekly. A. an editor B. a professional journalist C. a column writer D. a news reporter-intern 60. According to the article, a good news story should include the following EXCEPT ____. A. the writer’s personal opinion B. correctness of language C. logical organization D. a good topic 61. The writer often worked late in the office because ____. A. her colleagues did so B. she was told to do so C. she found it worth doing D. she was used to staying up late 62. The underlined word “foe” in the article means ____. A. boss B. colleague C. enemy D. criminal (C) Signs made up mainly of circles, crosses, or arrows, can occasionally be seen at the entrance of a house, indicating that a tramp(流浪汉) has passed. This special sign-language is frequently employed by tramps to inform their fellows whether the inhabitants of a certain house are generous or mean, hospitable or unfriendly, and to save them the trouble of making unnecessary calls. Quite by chance one day, I came across a real tramp. He is such a rare sight these days, that I stood some distance away and watched him. He was dressed just as a tramp should be in patched trousers much the worse for wear, and a jacket many sizes too big for him. On his head there was a battered old hat, and his boots were so old and worn that they were almost coming to pieces. But the man himself looked cheerful and happy as if he had not a care in the world. He rubbed his nose, made a funny little turn, deposited a small bundle by the front gate, and began studying a sign made by a previous caller. Although the sign was meaningless to me, it must have been favourable, for the tramp’s face glowed with satisfaction. He entered the front gate confidently and ran the bell. When the door opened, I saw him raise his hat but could not hear what he said. The conversation which took place was very brief indeed, for no sooner had he uttered a few words than the door slammed(砰然关上) violently in his face. I felt sorry for him as he walked sadly out of the house. But just as quickly, his face lit up again and he moved briskly towards the gate. There he stopped, looked at the sign, and shook his head gravely as if he had made a bad mistake. Digging deeply into his pockets, he produced a piece of chalk, rubbed out the existing sign and scrawled a new one in its place. He gazed at it for a moment smiling to himself, then gathered his belongings, pushed back his hat and began walking towards the next house at a leisurely pace, whistling as he went along. 63. Tramps use a special sign-language ____. A. to talk to each other B. to leave messages for each other C. to prevent other people understanding it D. to show where they have been 64. The underlined part “much the worse for wear” mean ____? A. nearly worn out B. badly fitting C. too big D. not in fashion 65. What did the tramp in the story do after he rubbed out the sign outside the house? A. He replaced it by a favourable one. B. He replaced it by an unfavourable one. C. He wrote some warning words. D. He wrote some rude words. (D) Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A--F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need. (每小题1分)
A. Everlasting thoughts in print B. Lifelong friends C. Books and companions D. Companionship of books E. Living spiritual guides F. Bridges between minds 66. ( ) A man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he keeps; for there is a companionship of books as well as of men; and one should always live in the best company, whether it be of books or of men. 67. ( ) A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the same today that it always was, and it will never change. It is the most patient and cheerful of companions. It does not turn its back upon us in times of adversity or distress. It always receives us with the same kindness, amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting and consoling us in age. 68. ( ) Books possess an essence of immortality. They are by far the most lasting products of human effort. Temples and statues decay, but books survive. Time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author’s minds ages ago. What was then said and thought still speaks to us as vividly as ever from the printed page. 69. ( ) Books introduce us into the best society; they bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. We hear what they said and did; we see them as if they were really alive; we sympathize with them, enjoy with them, grieve with them; their experience becomes ours, and we feel as if we were, in a measure, actors with them in the scenes which they described. 70. ( ) The great and good do not die even in this world. Embalmed in books, their spirits walk abroad. The book is a living voice. It is an intellect to which one still listens. Hence we ever remain under the influence of great men of old. The imperial intellects of the world are as much alive now as they were ages ago.

I lived in Wellington but during my holidays, I would travel to other parts of the beautiful country. Auckland, Rotorua and Taupo were the first few places I went to. Auckland was just another big city, nothing fascinating. But Rotorua and Taupo were simply remarkable. I also went to the south island for a ski trip in Mount Hutt near Christchurch. It was the first time I tried skiing, and it was really fun. After my exams, I went to the south island again. I went from the west coast to the east coast and then back to Wellington, before flying back home to Britain. Questions: 11. For what purpose did the speaker go to New Zealand? 12. The survey of 1,000 people also found that 75 percent of men preferred women with small noses and 31 percent overall found small noses more appealing than large ones.
