Is there anything more important than health? I don’t think so. “Health is the greatest wealth(财富),” wise people say. You can’t be good at your studies or work well when you are ill.
If you have a headache, toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, if you run a high temperature and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think you should go to the doctor.
The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse, test your blood pressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After that he will advise some treatment, or some medicine. The only thing you have to do is to follow his advice.
Speaking about doctor’s advice, I can’t help telling you a funny story.
An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his disease.
He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks. In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule: “Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is.” The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldn’t smoke more than one cigarette a day.
A month later the gentleman came into the doctor’s office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man.
“But you know, doctor,” he said, “it’s not easy to begin smoking at my age.”

C. he was feeling worse than before D. he will be well again

Do you love holidays but hate the increase weight that follows? You are not alone.
Holidays are happy days with pleasure and delicious foods. Many people, however, are worried about the weight that comes along with these delicious foods.
With proper planning, though, it is possible to control your weight. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to eat too much. You don’t have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy. The following suggestions may be of some help to you.
Do not miss meals. Before you leave home for a feast (宴会), have a small, low-fat snack(小吃). This may help to keep you from getting too excited before delicious foods.
Begin with clear soup and fruit or vegetables. A large glass of water before you eat may help you feel full. Use a small plate; a large plate will encourage you to have more than enough.
Better not have high-fat foods. Dishes that look oily or creamy have much fat in them.
Choose lean meat (瘦肉). Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables.
If you have a sweet tooth, try mints (薄荷) and fruits. They don’t have fat content as cream and chocolate.
Don’t let exercise take a break during the holidays. A 20-minute walk after a meal can help burn off excess (过多的) calories.

The food we eat seems to have deep effects on our health. Although science has made very large steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at same time, made some food unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illness are connected with food and forty percent of cancer(癌症) is connected with food as well. Different cultures(文化) are more probable to get certain illnesses because of the food that is characteristic(特征) in these cultures. That food is connected with illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, American researchers realized that nitrates(硝酸盐) and nitrites (亚硝酸盐), commonly used to protect color in meats, and other food additives (添加剂), caused cancer. Yet these carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult, all the time, to know which things on the packaging label (标签) of treated food are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct.
Farmers often give penicillin to beef and poultry(猪肉) and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows.
Sometimes similar medicine is given to animals not for medical treatment , but for financial(经济的) reasons, the farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals for more money on the market.
46. “Different cultures are more probable to get certain illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures.” This sentence means ______.
A. cultures may bring about diseases to human beings
B. people in different countries probably understand cultures and diseases in different ways
C. people in different countries may suffer from the same diseases

Five years ago, there was no Macdonald hamburgers, no Kentucky Chickens, no Wendy’s. But now American fast food stores spring up in Taipei. Macdonald took the lead. It was followed by Kentucky Chicken. And then Pizza Hut. Nobody knows what other fast food companies may yet set up shops in Taiwan in the future.
The rapid growth of American fast foods is due not only to the American way of salesmanship but, in a great measure, to the fondness of the local people or this kind of American fast food. Young people especially take to it. They think it fashionable to eat American fast food. Besides, some people think it delicious. Although the fast foods are highly priced, the stores are often crowded.
The instruction(教育) of American fast foods has some healthy effects upon local food providers. They begin to look into themselves and see what they lack. At least, some of the local restaurants are starting to modernize themselves.

A. refuse B. eat C. buy D. like
53. Which was the second American fast food store appearing in Taipei?
A. Kentucky Chicken B. Wendy’s C. Macdonald D. Arby’s
54. The instruction of American fast foods________.
