The potential(潜力) of closed circuit(电路) television and other new electronic teaching tools is so great that it is wonderful to bring the picture of “the school of tomorrow” before mind.

Televised lessons will come from a central building having perhaps four or five master studios. The lessons will be carded into classrooms all over a city, or even a whole country.

After a televised lesson has been given, the classroom teacher will take over for the all important “follow-up” period. The students will ask any troublesome questions and difficult points will be cleared up through discussion.

The teacher in the classroom will have other electronic tools. The tape machines will run pre-recorded lessons which pupils will follow by headphones. The lessons will be specially offered to the students’ levels of ability. For example, while the class as a whole studies history, each student will receive an individual history lesson, directed to his particular level of ability.

Should questions appear, the students will be able to talk directly to the teacher on individual “intercom” (内线交流) without interrupting the rest of the class. In this way, the teacher will be able to conduct as many as three classes at the same time.

Break a mirror. Walk under a ladder. Notice that it’s Friday the thirteenth. What do you feel? Are you a little afraid? In all three cases, you may half believe that you are going to have bad luck. Such superstitions are usually very old. Often they have changed over time. Take “knocking on wood.” We do it for good luck. People long ago believed that trees were the homes of gods. So it was good luck to touch a tree. Who knows when “touching a tree” became “knocking on wood”?

Superstitions also change from place to place. The Dutch knock on wood for good luck. But it can’t be painted wood. So they knock on the bottom of a table.

Look at the supersition about spilling the salt. Spilling salt brings bad luck. To stop the bad luck, throw some salt over your left shoulder. The ancient Greeks believed that. So do some people today. But some Irish think you must throw the salt over your right shoulder. Or you must throw the salt over your left shoulder. Or you must throw some in the fire. If you don’t, you will have an argument. And spilling the salt will cause a fight. This is an old Jewish superstition.

In Denmark, spilling wet salt is bad luck. But spilling dry salt is good luck.

In some parts of England, you must not pass the salt to another person. You set it on the table. The other person picks it up. This is probably to keep you from spilling the salt and bringing bad luck.

49.Why did people start knocking on wood?

A.First people believed it was good luck to touch a tree. Then they started knocking on anything made of wood.

B.Ladders were made of wood. People started knocking on them for good luck.

C.The Dutch thought it would bring them good luck to touch painted wood.

D.People believe in gods living in the woods.

50.Which of the following may bring bad luck according to the passage?

A.Setting the salt on the table.

B.Passing the salt in some parts of England.

C.Spilling dry salt in Denmark.

D.Throwing the salt in the fire in Ireland.

51.Which of the following is NOT true?

A.Superstitions do not remain the same all over the world

B.People in many countries believe in superstitions.

C.Some people today still believe that one should throw some salt on one’s right shoulder to stop bad luck.

D.Superstitions keep changing over time and have lasted a long time.

52.The best title of this passage is .

A.“Believe It!” B.“About Luck”

C.“Good Luck” D.“Bad Luck”

In the past few years ballooning has become a popular sport in the UK. Although it is still quite expensive compared with other sports, many people now think of a balloon flight as the perfect answer for a birthday present or a particular occasion. Some businesses also entertain their staff or visitors with a balloon ride and may even buy their own balloon to advertise their business products.

One of the best known balloon companies in the UK is based in Bristol in the west of England. Flights are available throughout the year and last for at least one hour. They usually take off soon after sunrise or a couple of hours before sunset, but they do not fly if it is raining or very windy.

It seems that once people have experienced a balloon flight they can become so keen on the sport that they want to have their own balloon. No two flights are ever the same and people find the sport different and exciting. The company in Bristol trains people to fly their own balloons but warns that it can be a very expensive hobby.

A.To tell a story about ballooning. B.To advertise a new sport.
