There are different ideas about the origin of Valentine’s Day(情人节).But most people favor the following version. It goes like this.
During the reign(统治)of the cruel Roman Emperor Claudius, there lived a priest whose name was Valentine. He lived in a beautiful temple in Rome and the Romans gave him great respect and admiration. Both young and old, rich and poor came to listen to his teachings. The emperor didn’t like that, especially when the men didn’t want to leave their wives or sweet hearts to join the army and fight for him. The emperor declared that there should be no more marriages or engagements carried out from then on. Valentine thought that was not fair to young lovers. So he secretly married several couples. When Claudius found that Valentine dared to disobey him, he was very angry. He ordered his soldiers to put Valentine into prison, beat him hard and cut his head off. Valentine’s death is said to have occurred on Feb 14th, 269AD. In 494 AD Pope Celsius set aside that date to honor him. Since then Feb 14th has been regarded as the day for exchanging love messages and Valentine has been considered the patron saint(守护神)of lovers.
Centuries ago it was believed that the first person seen on Valentine’s Day would be one’s sweetheart or lover. That belief was reflected in Shakespeare’s famous play Hamlet. Ophelia who was madly in love with Hamlet became insane(精神病的).Even in her madness she sang ‘Tomorrow is St. Valentine’s Day. All in the morning betimes, (“betimes” here means “betimes” or early)and I am, at your window, to be your Valentine.
Here Ophelia believed if she sat at hamlet’s window in the early morning on Valentine’s Day, she’d have a chance of seeing him. If Hamlet was the first man she saw on Valentine’s Day, then he would be her lover.

Thanksgiving
Throughout the world, people have always given thanks at harvest time. Every religion has its own way of celebrating this ancient festival. At harvest time, Christian churches are decorated with fruit, flowers and harvest leaves.
On the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, the Koreans celebrate the harvest thanksgiving or Ch’usok. This is also an important time to pay respect to one’s ancestors(祖先)by visiting the grave and by placing newly-harvested fruit, rice-cakes and wine on the altar(祭坛)at the ancestral shrine.(圣地)
In the English county of Cornwall, the ancient ceremony known as the “crying of the neck” still takes place. The last sheaf(束)of corn to be harvested is held up and blessed by the local vicar(牧师). In the past, the last sheaf to be harvested was turned into an elaborate(精制的)”corn idol” or “dolly”. This used to be kept through the winter and then ploughed into the ground at the time of the next spring planting.
Thanksgiving Day has been one of the most important festivals in the United States of America since Abraham Lincoln declared it a public holiday in 1864. Celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, it dates back to the time of the pilgrims(清教徒) who sailed from England to settle on the coast of Massachusetts in 1620. Man must eat in order to live; therefore, one of the most important problems man has is how to have enough to eat.
At first man did not have any way to control his food supply. When he had killed all the animals in one place and all the natural foods had been used, he had to move to another place and find new sources of food. If there was no rain, or if the weather was too hot or too cold, plants would not grow and man had little or no food. However, man gradually learned ways to grow plants and animals himself. From that time on, he did not depend on natural conditions and did not have to worry so much about always not having enough food.
The kinds of plants which are raised by men are different in different regions(区域). In the colder regions, very few plants can be grown; in the warmer parts of the world many sorts of plants are found. For example, in Asia rice is the most important crop. In the New World, the major(主要的)grain is corn. In Europe and North Africa, wheat oats(燕麦)and barley(大麦)are grown. In the tropical(热带的)regions of the world, many kinds of fruit grow naturally or are raised by man.
As he has learned more about plants and animals, man now used modern methods to produce different kinds of food. However, there still more areas in the world where plants and animals are raised in much the same ways as were used thousands of years ago.

D.began to look down upon natural conditions
67.Which of the following is not true?
A.Man knew how to produce foods and keep them at first.
B.At the very beginning man knew that he needed food but did not know how control his food supply.
C.Before man learned way to grow crops and raise animals, he had to move from place to place in order to get food.
D.How to have enough to eat has always been a problem for man.

D

Most great inventors often met with much trouble in their work. Before they could succeed, they had to overcome(克服)thousands of difficulties which were put in their way. The following is one of such examples.
George Stephenson(1781—1848),a famous British inventor, made the first train in 1825, using a steam engine(发动机). When he was experimenting with the engine on the train, he met with troubles from the government, the newspapers and the gentlemen in the country. They said that the noise and the smoke would kill cows, horses and sheep, that the engine would burst or that the hot coals from it would set fire to their houses. People believed what they said.
George Stephenson told the people that the train could go on small rails, could pull carriages full of goods and passengers and that there was no great danger to them. It was a very difficult matter for him to make them believe. However, after some time , he was able to do it ,and the first train that was driven by Stephenson himself proved what he said. On the train there was a new steam engine. It was invented by him, and was proved a complete success.
The first day when the train ran on the rails, people along the way heard the noise of the train in the distance, and saw it running quickly to them. They thought it was a genie. They ran quickly back home for fear and closed their doors tightly. They did not dare to come out until it had passed. A week later an old woman still said her hen had been so frightened that it hadn’t laid any eggs for three days.

E

With the possible exception of equal rights, perhaps the most heated argument across the United States today is the death penalty(死刑). Many argue that it is an effective deterrent (威慑)to murder, while others think there is no enough proof that the death penalty reduces the number of murders.
The argument advanced by those opposed(反对)to the death penalty is that it is cruel and inhuman punishment, that it is tile mark of a bad society and finally that it is of questionable effectiveness as a deterrent to crime(罪行)anyway.
In our opinion, the death penalty is a necessary action. Throughout recorded history there have always been those peculiar persons in every society who made terrible crimes such as murder. But some are more dangerous that others.
For example, it is one thing to take the life of another in time of blind anger, but quite another to coldly plan and carry out the murder of one or more people in the style of a butcher.. Thus, murder, like all other crimes, is a matter of different degree. While it could be argued with some reason that the criminal in the first instance should be merely kept from society, such should not be the fate of the latter type murderer.
The value of the death penalty as a deterrent to crime may be open to discussion. But the majority of people believe that the death penalty protects them. Their belief is proved by the fact that the death penalty prevents murder. For example, from 1954 to 1963, when the death penalty was carried out from time to time in California, the murder rate remained between three and four murders for each 100,000 population. Since 1964 the death penalty has been done only once, and the murder rate has risen 10.4 murders for each 100,000 population. The sharp climb in the state’s murder rate, which began when killings stopped, does not happen by chance. It certainly shows that the death penalty does deter many murderers. If the law about death penalty is vetoed(否决), some people will be murdered-----some whose lives may have been saved if the death penalty were in effect. This is really a life or death matter. The lives of thousands of people must be protected.
72.The main purpose of this passage is to .
A.speak for the majority B.support a veto
C.speak ill of the government D.argue for the value of the death penalty
73.Which of the following is among the heated arguments across the USA besides death penalty?
A.Air pollution B.the war against Iraq
C.Equal rights D.Election of president
74.The numbers in the last paragraph show that .
A.if they stick to death penalty, the number of murders will be reduced
B.death penalty almost stopped from 1954 to 1963
C.the population of California has risen
D.death penalty is of little value
75.It can be inferred that the writer thinks that .
A.the death penalty is the most important problem in the United States today
B.the second type of murderers (in Paragraph 4) should be sentenced to death
C.the veto of the law about death penalty is of little importance
D.the value of the death penalty as a deterrent to crime is not be discussed
