2:19 P.M. Six minutes into summer vacation, and it already sucks. My best friend, Jen, just hugged me goodbye because her parents are putting her on a plane to Costa Rica today. So she can spend the summer there and bring monkeys back to life for Kids Saving the Rainforest.
As for me, the only “monkey” I’ll see this summer is my mom’s new boyfriend. They’re both lawyers. She met him about three months ago--- they have a case together. My mom is so crazy over him she can’t even see his potato-like forehead, his ears sticking out and that his eyes are too closely set. If I knew an anthropologist(人类学家), I would call her because this man is clearly the missing link between humans and monkeys.
2:22 p.m. That’s another reason this summer will suck. When Mom isn’t working, she’s out with the Missing Link. So she won’t be taking me to any movies, my all-time favorite thing to do. I need to go my Hollywood places. But I’m only 15 and don’t have my license, so anything I do has to be within walking distance.
I know it sounds crazy, but when I watch all those movies, I can picture myself on the screen. Yes, me. Saffron Jones. Future star. At present I was stuck in Brockport for the summer with a missing best friend, a missing mom and the Missing Link.

I always felt sorry for the people in wheelchair. Some people, old and week, cannot get around by themselves. Others seem perfectly healthy, dressed in business suits. But whenever I saw someone in a wheelchair, I only saw a disability, not a person..
Then I fainted(晕倒)at Euro Disney due to low blood pressure. This was the first time I had ever fainted, and my parents said that I must rest for a while after First Aid. I agreed to take it easy but, as I stepped towards the door, I saw my dad pushing a wheelchair in my direction! Feeling the color burn my cheeks, I asked him to wheel that thing right back to where he found it.
I could not believe this was happening to me. Wheelchairs were fine for other people but not for me, as my father wheeled me out into the main street, people immediately began to treat me differently.
Little kids ran in front of me, forcing my father to stop the wheelchair suddenly. Bitterness set in as I was thrown back and forth. “Stupid kids---they have perfectly good legs. Why can’t they watch where they are going?” I thought. People stared down at me, pity in their eyes. Then they would look away, maybe because they thought the sooner they forgot me, the better.
“I’m just like you!” I wanted to cry. “The only difference is that you’ve got legs, and I have wheels.”
People in wheelchairs are not stupid. They see every look and hear each word. Looking out at the faces, I finally understood: I was once just like them. I treated people in wheelchairs exactly the way they didn’t want to be treated. I realized it is some of us with two healthy legs who are truly disabled.
