B ● Being an “Only Child” Many of us have no sisters or brothers, and so are our parents’ only children. Some of us are even the only grand children that our grandparents have. Even though that means that we are somewhat unlucky because we don’t have any brothers or sisters to play with, we are so lucky. Since we are the only children in our family, all our parents’ love must go to us! ● Becoming Selfish Our parents spend lots of time, energy and money making us happy. Sure, they may not always give us exactly what we want, but they do try pretty hard. It might seem only natural that we get used to having people always doing lots of things for us. People care about us whether or not we pay attention to their needs. Whether it is by our parents or our grandparents, we are always treated very well. ● Breaking Free of our Selfishness Even though our parents are always treating us well, that doesn’t mean that we don’t need to treat others well, too. We need to do our best to show our parents and our grandparents, as well as our friends and neighbours, that we really do appreciate them. We should learn to care about their feelings and show them the same respect that they give us.
42. The mainly tells us that __________________________. A. how to give respect to our parents B. how to be a good child in the family C. how to spend money that parents give us D. how to become a selfish child in the family
43. According to the passage, we are not lucky because ________________________. A. we are our parents’ only children B. our parents can’t give us what we want C. we don’t have other kids to play with D. we don’t just want what we need
44. If we want to break free of our selfishness, we should not ________________. A. help neighbors when needed B. respect friends and listen to them C. help our parents with the house work D. ask our grandparents for as much pocket money as possible
C There was one shop in the town of Mufulira which was widely known for its racial discrimination (种族歧视). It was a drugstore. While Europeans were served at the counter, a long line of Africans queued at the window and often not only were kept waiting but were rudely treated by the shop assistants. One day I was determined to make a public protest (抗议) against this kind of thing, and many of the schoolboys in my class followed me to the store. I simply went into the shop and asked the manager politely for some medicine. As soon as he saw me standing in the place where only European customers were allowed to stand, he shouted at me in a bastard language which is only used by a boss when speaking to his servants. I stood at the counter and politely requested in proper English that I should be served. The manager became angry and said, “Even if you stand there till Christmas, I will never serve you.” I went to the District Commissioner’s office. Luckily, he was out, for he was one of the old school; however, I saw a young District Officer who was a friend of mine. He was very concerned to hear my story and told me that all I had to do was come to him personally and he would buy my medicine for me. I protested that that was not good enough. I asked him to accompany me back to the store and to make a protest to the manager. This he did, and I well remember him saying to the manager, “Here is Mr. Kaunda who is a responsible member of the Urban Advisory Council, and you treat him like a common servant.” The manager of the drugstore apologized and said, “If only he had introduced himself and explained who he was, then, of course I should have given him proper service.” I had explained once again that he had missed my point. Why should I have to introduce myself every time I went into a store…any more than I should have to buy my medicine by going to a European friend? I want to prove that any man of any color, whatever his position, should have the right to go into any shop and buy what he wants. After all, the money which I paid across the counter was exactly the same money as was paid by a European customer.
45. The writer was, at the time of the story, _________. A. a European officer B. an African servant C. a drugstore assistant D. a black school teacher
46. The manager of the drugstore shouted at the writer in dirty words because _________. A. he could not speak English in a polite way B. he thought the writer wouldn’t understand English C. that was the language he used when speaking to Africans D. that was the only language he could speak when he was angry
47. Why didn’t the writer wait at the window of the drugstore like other Africans? A. He believed his friends would help him out. B. He wanted to fight for equal rights of all people. C. He thought he was well educated and should be treated differently. D. He thought, being an important person, he shouldn’t be kept waiting.
D Animals do many different, amazing things to get through the winter. Some of them “migrate.” This means that they travel to other places where the weather is warmer or where they can find food. Many birds migrate in autumn. Because the trip can be dangerous, some travel in large groups. For example, geese fly in noisy, “V”–shaped groups. Other kinds of birds fly alone. Some animals stay active in winter. They must change themselves as weather changes. Many change their doing or their bodies. For example, Snowshoe rabbits grow white fur to help them hide in the snow. Food is hard to find in winter. Some animals, like mice, collect lots of food in autumn and store it to eat later. Some animals eat different kinds of food as the seasons change. The red fox eats fruit and insects in spring, summer and autumn. In winter, it can not find these things, so instead it eats small animals. Some animals “hibernate” for part or all of the winter. This is a special, very deep sleep. The animal’s body temperature drops, and it’s heartbeat and breathing slow down. It uses very little energy. In autumn, these animals get ready for winter by eating much more food than in summer and storing it as body fat. They use this fat to keep them alive while hibernating. Some also store food like nuts to eat later in winter. Bears and some bats hibernate. Cold-blooded animals like fish, frogs and snakes have no way to keep warm during the winter. Snakes find protection in holes, and spend the winter without moving during the whole season. Water makes good protection for many animals. When the weather gets cold, they move to the bottom of lakes and rivers. There, frogs and many fish hide under rocks or fallen leaves. Cold water holds more oxygen than warm water, and frogs can breathe through their skin. Every type of insect has its own life cycle, which is the way it grows and changes. Different insects spend the winter in different forms of their lives. Many insects also spend the winter without moving. Their growth and development stop. The insect’s heartbeat, breathing and temperature drop. Some insects spend the winter as pupae. (This is a time when insects change from one form to another.) Other insects die after laying eggs in autumn. The eggs change into new insects in spring and everything begins all over again.
48. Many birds fly in large groups because ______________ . A. they can easily find food this way B. there is danger everywhere C. they can get warm at night D. they will not be afraid again
49. In the water, frogs ______________ . A. do not breathe B. sleep and do not eat C. breathe through their skin D. breathe through their mouths
50. Which is the best title for the passage? A. How do animals spend the winter? B. How do living things spend the winter? C. How do living things get food in the winter? D. Where do living things move in the winter?
