Two thieves came to a house to steal something. They dug a hole in the wall of the house.

There lived many mice in the house. The woman in the moonlight saw a mouse crawl(爬行) into the house. “Look! In comes one,” she said to the man in the house. The thief was so frightened that he hurriedly crawled out of the house and said to the one waiting outside, “She found me when I was just in.” But the thief outside didn’t believe him, so he said, “Let us try to crawl into the house together.” At that time two mice happened to crawl into the house, too. Handsome Safin is loved by many women fans and he is called “the most attractive man”. His strength and forehand and backhand skills are the best in the world, which are in fact unbeatable while he is at his best.

Marat Safin was born in Moscow on 27th January, 1980, and was introduced to the game at a very early age. His mother Rausa, one of the former top 10 Russian women tennis players, used to take baby Marat with her when she practiced at the local Spartak club. This is where Marat also learned to play.

Marat had picked up his racket(球拍) almost as soon as he could walk and at five was hitting balls with a little child until 1992.

When Marat was 13, his parents decided to send him abroad for further practice, so in that year Marat and his mother visited a tennis school in Valencia where Maria Pasqual, former director of Spanish women’s tennis, was asked to judge his potential(潜力). Pasqual liked what she saw and managed to persuade a Swiss client(客户) into keeping him at the school.

In the following four years Marat lived in Valencia employing Pasqual as his career advisor, working on his great clay court skills and learning the Spanish language.

Marat’s first title came in 1997 at a Challenger in Espinho and soon afterwards he turned professional. He won his first title on the ATP Tour in August, 1999 when he beat Greg Rusedski in the final of the MFS Professional Championships in Boston. In 2000, Safin won his first Grand Slam(大满贯) title—US Open. He also reached the final of the Australian Open in 2002 and 2004. On November 7, 2004, Marat Safin beat Czech qualifier’ Stepanek to win his third Paris Masters title. He also won the Paris Masters in 2000 and 2002.

“I really enjoy tennis because it brings about extreme emotions and allows me to live my dreams,” said Safin. Yes, the future certainly looks rosy for him. Just like what his former adviser, Maria Pasqual said, “He will be a champion one day” —surely he already is!

Pirates of the Strait(海峡) of Malacca

You’ve heard of the second Pirates of the Caribbean movie. But what about pirates in real life?

The Strait of Malacca off Indonesia’s coast is known to be one of the most pirate-infested(大批海盗出没的) areas in the world. In 2006 alone, there have been six pirate attacks in this area.

The most recent attack was on Tuesday, July 4, 2006. The pirates traveled on a speedboat off Indonesia’s Sumatra Island and followed a Japanese ship.

A duty officer noticed the incoming attack when the pirates tried to board the back end of the ship. Floodlights were turned on and the crew used water to successfully prevent the pirates from boarding the ship.

This attack was just two days after pirates boarded two U.N.-chartered(包租) ships carrying tsunami(海啸) reconstruction materials. In those attacks, there were no injuries, but crew members among one ship were robbed of their personal belongings and cash. On the second ship, the pirates damaged and stole various pieces of equipment.

Although there have been six attacks this year, last year attacks were at an all-time low because of increased naval patrolling(巡逻) by Indonesia and its neighbors.

“At the moment we don’t know if these are isolated cases or the start of attacks again in the Malacca Straits,” said Noel Choong, chief of the International Maritime Bureau’s(海事局) piracy reporting center in Kuala Lumpur.

More than 50,000 ships pass through the strait each year carrying half of the world’s oil and a third of its commerce. The area is one of the busiest shipping lanes(航路) in the world and a key link between Asia and Europe.

44. From the passage we know that the Strait of Malacca is _______.

A. the busiest shipping lane in the world today

B. one of the best places to make the pirate movies

D. had six pirate attacks in 2005 which were an all-time low

45. According to the passage, two U.N.-chartered ships _______ near the Strait of Malacca.

A. successfully prevented the pirates from boarding the ships

B. were attacked by the pirates on July 6, 2006

C. had all the tsunami reconstruction materials robbed of by the pirates

D. had some of their crews injured in the fighting against the pirates

46. The underlined “isolated cases” in Paragraph 6 most probably means _______.

A. occasional ones, not happening in groups

B. the ones far away from the group

C. the ones divided into different groups

D. the ones separated from the group

47. From the passage, we can infer that _______ is nearest to the Strait of Malacca.

A. London B. New York C. Hong Kong D. Tokyo

D

On July 2, 2006, a giant asteroid(小行星) named 2004 XP14 flew past the earth. The asteroid was discovered in 2004 and scientists believe it is nearly half a mile wide. The scientists determined its size by the asteroid’s brightness. This is not the first time, however, that an asteroid has come close to our planet.

Many other asteroids in history have zipped(有力而迅速地行动) past the earth, but 2004 XP14 is by far the largest. In January of 2001, asteroid 2001 YB5 passed the earth by only 510,000 miles. In 2002, asteroid 2002 MN missed the earth by 210,000 miles—making it the closest call ever. The 2004 XP14, however, is 74-million miles from the earth, but it is still the largest asteroid to pass our planet.

Although some asteroids did pass the earth at a very close proximity, many scientists believe the possibility of one hitting our planet is fairly slim(甚微). We have many of the asteroids mapped out in our solar (of the sun) system, and we actually have been able to determine their orbit(运行轨道) for years to come.

Asteroid 2004 XP14 is expected to fly past the earth 10 more times within the next century. It is visible from Europe by the human eyes and can be seen in North America with a telescope.

48. According to the passage, what do we know about 2004 XP14?

A. It’s an asteroid that has flown past the earth by the closest distance.

B. It can be seen by the human eyes in most parts of the world.

C. It’s an asteroid that flew past on July 2, 2006 for the first time.

D. It probably flies past the earth in every ten years.

49. The underlined word “proximity” in Para 3 most probably means ______.

A. nearness in time B. nearness in distance

C. measure in safety D. measure in response

50. From the passage we can infer that an asteroid is most probably named after ______.

A. the year when it was discovered B. the man who discovered it

C. the size measured by its brightness D. the time it passed the earth

51. Which is the most suitable title for the passage?

A. Hitting the Earth Possible ?

B. Determine its Orbit for the Years to Come

C. Asteroid Comes Close to the Earth

D. How to Watch Asteroid 2004 XP14

E

We find that bright children are seldom held back by mixed-ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming(按能力分班) pupils. It does not take into account(考虑) the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright children. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade.

Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects(方面) of learning.

In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate(评估), and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.

Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to reach this goal.

52. By “held back” (Para. 1) the author means “________”.

A. made to remain in the same classes

B. forced to study in the lower classes

C. drawn to their studies

D. prevented from advancing

53. The author argues that a teacher’s chief concern should be the development of the students’ ______.

A. personal qualities and social skills

B. total personality

C. intellectual ability

D. learning ability and communicative skills

54. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the third paragraph?

A. Group work gives pupils the opportunity to learn to work together with others.

B. Pupils also learn to develop their reasoning abilities.

C. Group work provides pupils with the opportunity to learn to be capable organizers.

D. Pupils also learn how to take part in teaching activities.

55. The author’ s purpose in writing this passage is to _______.

A. argue for teaching bright and not-so-bright pupils in the same class

B. recommend pair work and group work for classroom activities

C. offer advice on the proper use of the library

D. emphasize the importance of proper formal classroom teaching

Dear headmaster,

Knowing that our school is going to install air-conditioners, the students of our class had a heated discussion. Some students are for the plan while others are against it.

Students who are for the plan think that air-conditioners can make us comfortable both in summer and in winter. Besides, their families are well off and can afford the cost.

But other students think that air-condi?鄄tioners can make the environment get worse, and air-conditioners will make a lot of noise which will have a bad effect on their studies. Meanwhile, installing air-conditioners will increase their economic burden.

In my opinion, I don’t agree to install air-conditioners. We are students, and we should protect our environment as well.

With best wishes.

Yours,

Li Hua
