There is an English saying: “Laughter is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter really can improve people’s health.
Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter had similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial(有益的).
Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programmes. The group that tolerated the pain for the longest time was the groups which listened to a funny programme. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish(减少) both stress and pain.
As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patient’s condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.

Internet shopping is a new way of shopping. You no longer need to walk around hundreds of shops looking for the items you need. Nowadays, you can shop for just about anything from your armchair. All you need is a computer which is linked to the Internet. Shopping on the Internet is becoming increasingly popular. In the United States, 50 percent of families have computers at home and almost one third are linked to the Internet. Americans spent over $2.5 billion in Internet shopping in 1998. This figure is expected to reach $11 billion by the year 2004.
People can shop for a variety of products on the Internet. Physical products include items such as books, CDs, clothes and food. These types of products are the most common purchases through the Internet. You can also buy information products such as on-line news or magazine stories, or you can download computer software through the Internet. Services such as booking airline tickets, reserving(预定)hotels or renting cars are also available on the Internet. You can also go shopping on the Internet for entertainment services and take part in on-line games or E-mail “chats”.
To find something on the Internet, people often use powerful computer tools called “search engines”. You can search for a type of product, such as sports shoes, or a brand name, such as Nike. The search engine will give you a list of websites where you can find these products. These websites may be specialist shops such as a Nike shop, or they may be general stores, called malls, which sell a variety of goods.
Internet shopping offers a number of benefits for the shoppers. The most important advantage is convenience. You can shop when you like as the on-line shops are open 24 hours a day, and you do not have to queue with other shoppers at the check-out counters. Secondly, it is easy to find what you are looking for on line. Finally, it is often cheaper to buy goods through the Internet, and you can tell the shop exactly what you want.
The main disadvantage of Internet shopping is that you cannot actually see the products you are buying or check their quality. Also, many people enjoy shopping in the city and miss the opportunity to talk to friends. Some people are worried about paying for goods using credit cards, so Internet companies are now finding ways to make on-line payment safe.
Internet shopping is sure to become more and more popular in the years ahead. It promises to change the way we buy all kinds of things---- from tonight’s dinner to a new car.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could just look up at the sky and read the weather forecast right away? Well, you can. The forecast is written in clouds. If you can read that writing, you can tell something about the atmosphere. With some practice, you can become a pretty good weather forecaster. Who knows, you might even do as well as meteorologists(气象学者).
Meteorologists use much more information than just the appearance of the clouds to make their forecast. They collect data(数据)from all over the world. Then they put it into powerful, high-speed computers.
This does give meteorologists an advantage, because they can track weather patterns as they move from west to east across the country.
But you have an advantage, too. You can look at the sky and get your data directly. A meteorologist uses a computer forecast that takes several hours to make a local forecast.
What are you seeing when you look at a cloud? “A picture of what moisture(湿度)is doing in the atmosphere, ” says meteorologist Peter Leavitt. There’s moisture throughout the atmosphere. Most of the time you don’t see it, because it’s in the form of an unseen gas called water vapor.
Sometimes, the temperature of the air gets cold enough to cause the water vapor to change to liquid water. That’s called condensation(浓缩), and we see it happen all the time(for example, when damp air hits the cold glass of a mirror). When enough water vapor condenses, tiny drops form in the air. These drops spread light. A cloud is seen. Watching clouds over a day or two tells you a lot more than a single cloud about the weather to come. Changes in clouds show changes in the atmosphere.
You should begin to notice patterns. Certain clouds, following each other in order, can signal a coming storm. But don’t take our word for it; see for yourself.
53. This passage mainly tells us about how to ________ .
A. become a meteorologist B. keep an eye on the weather
C. be an assistant to a meteorologist D. change water vapor to liquid water

D. asking for information from a weather station
55. Your advantage in weather forecasts is that ________.
A. you have more powerful computers at home
B. your brain works as well as a high-speed computer
C. you observe the sky and obtain your data directly
D. meteorologists give their data to you as soon as they get them
56. What causes vapor to change into water?
A. A lot of moisture. B. Thick clouds.
C. Warm atmosphere. D. Cold air temperature.

It is natural for young people to be critical of their parents at times and to blame them for most of the misunderstandings between them. They have always complained, more or less justly that their parents are out of touch with modern ways; that they always want to control them; that they do not trust them to deal with problems; and that they have no sense of humor, at least in parent-child relationships.
Young people often irritate their parents with their choices in clothes, hairstyles, and music. Actually this is not what they really intend to do. They feel cut off from the adult world into which they have not yet been accepted. So they create a culture and society of their own. Then, if it turns out that their music or clothes or hairstyles make their parents angry, this gives them additional enjoyment. They feel they are better, at least in a small way, and that they are leaders in style and taste.
Sometimes you do not obey orders, and are proud because you do not want your parents to say yes to what you do. If they do, it looks as if you are unfaithful to your own age group. But in that case, you will probably think that you are the underdog(受压迫者): you can’t win but at least you can keep your honor. This is a passive way of looking at things. It is natural enough after long years of childhood, when you were completely under your parents’ control. If you plan to control your life, co-operation can be part of that plan. You can persuade others, especially your parents, into doing things the way you want. Get them to feel your sense of responsibility and initiative(主动)so that they will allow you to do what you want to do.
57. The first paragraph is mainly about ________.
A. children’s complaints about their parents
B. misunderstandings between children and their parents
C. the control of the parents over their children
D. children’s ability to deal with problems
58. The underlined word “irritate” in this passage is closest in meaning to “_______”.
A. to make someone excited B. to make someone angry
C. to please someone D. to comfort someone
59. Children choose to have certain strange clothes and hairstyles because they _______.
A. want to show their existence by creating a culture of their own
B. have a strong desire to be leaders in style and taste
C. have no other way to enjoy themselves better
D. want to make their parents angry
60. Children do not want their parents to say yes to whatever they do because they _______.
A. have already been accepted into the adult world
B. feel that they are better in a small way than the adults
C. are not likely to win over adults
D. have a desire to be independent
