阅读下面短文, 从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A friend of mine met with an accident driving in darkness. His legs were so hurt that he couldn’t move. What was the 51 was that he found himself unable to ask for help — his mobile phone went out of 52 as a result of exhausted battery. Nothing could be done but 53 in cold wilderness. It was 8 hours later that day broke, and then the 54 of the rescue.
It is almost 55 that he could stand the horror in the darkness for so long. Even more surprising was his 56 : “First of all I checked up my 57 conditions and found myself not in fatal danger. As there was no 58 to call for help, I leaned back in my seat trying my best to keep the wound from 59 . In this way I dozed off.”
His story put an end to my regret for the 60 of an exploration adventure that happened last year. A group of young men 61 to explore a mountain cave and got lost. 62 to find a way out in the dark cave they were frightened and ran anxiously without a sense of 63 . Finally they fell dead in fear and exhaustion. According to the 64 people that found them, the place where they got lost was only about 10 meters away from the 65 of the cave. If they stayed on the spot when they lost their way and tried to 66 themselves, they would probably sense a faint light shining not far away.
Don’t you think that you can compare it with 67 itself? When you meet with obstacles (障碍) in life and work, you are lost in darkness. 68 you it’s unclear yet and you needn’t put up struggle 69 . It seems to be a negative attitude, 70 a person who can afford to do so must have foresight as well as a great courage in the first place.

Room doctors and medical groups around the world last weekend reacted with strong opposition to the news that an Italian specialist is on the brisk of cloning the first human baby.
Dr. Severino Antinori, who is head of a hospital in Rome, has been referred to in an Arab newspaper claiming that one of his parents is eight weeks pregnant(怀孕) with a cloned baby.
Antinori refused to comment on the reports, but in March 2001 he said he hoped to produce a cloned embryo(胎儿) for implantation with two years. So far seven different kinds of animals have already successfully been cloned, including sheep, cats and most recently rabbits.
Doctors showed their doubt and were strongly opposed although they admitted that human cloning would finally come true unless there was a worldwide ban on the practice.
Professor Rudolf Jaenisch of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said, “I find it astonishing that people do this where the result can be foretold that it will not be a normal baby. It is using humans as guinea pigs(试验品). It makes people feel sick.”
But Ronald Green, director of the Ethics Institute at Darmouth College in the USA, said it is unlikely that an eight-week-old pregnancy would lead to a birth.
So far all cloned animals have suffered from some different serious disorders, many of them dying soon after their birth.
Doctors are opposed to human cloning because they are worried about the welfare of the cloned child if there is one. “There are no benefits of cloned human beings, just harm,” said Dr. Michael Wilks of the U.K.
71. The underlined phrase “on the brisk of” probably means _______.
A. on the side of B. on the point of C. in search of D.in favor of

The average person learns most of the 30 000~40 000 words whose meanings he or she recognizes by hearing them or getting familiar with them in the context or simply absorbing them without conscious (意识到的) effort. The best way to build a good vocabulary, therefore, is to read a great deal and to participate in a lot of good talks. There are relatively few words that we learn permanently (永久的)by purposefully referring to dictionaries or keeping word lists. However, even those extra few are of value, and no one will make a mistake by working on developing a larger vocabulary. Here are some suggestions of how to do it.
Read plenty of good books. When you come across a new word, stop and see if you can understand it from its context. If you can't, and if you can manage without interrupting the thought of the book too much, look it up in a dictionary or ask somebody. If you are really conscientious(认真的), write the word and its meaning in a personal vocabulary list — preferably using it in a sentence, or you can keep a special vocabulary notebook. Go over the list from time to time. Further, try to use a new word in writing or conversation a few times over the next several days.
Listen to good talks and be alert to new words you hear or to new meanings of words you already know. Then treat them just as you treat the new words you read.
Learn and be alert to the parts of words: prefixes, suffixes and roots. Knowing them enables you to make intelligent guesses about the meaning of words.
75. When you meet a new word in reading, what should you do?
A. Guess its meaning. B. Ask somebody.
C. Look it up in a dictionary. D. All of the above.
76. According to this passage, the best way to build a good vocabulary is _______.
A. to remember a lot B. to read a great deal
C. to take part in a lot of good talks D. both B and C
77. The phrase “be alert to” in the third paragraph may best be replaced by “_______”.
A. look at B. pay attention to C. write down D. learn by heart
78. In the fourth paragraph, the word “them” refers to _______.
A. the parts of words B. prefixes C. suffixes D. roots

The young boy saw me, or rather, he saw the car and quickly ran up to me, eager to sell his bunches (串) of bananas and bags of peanuts. Though he appeared to be about twelve, he seemed to have already known the bitterness of life. "Banana 300 naira. Peanuts 200 naira"
He said in a low voice. I bargained him down to 200 total for the fruit and nuts. When he agreed, I handed him a 500 naira bill He didn't have change, so I told him not to worry.
He said thanks and smiled a row of perfect teeth.
When, two weeks later, I saw the boy again, I was more aware of my position in a society where it's not that uncommon to see a little boy who should be in school standing on the comer selling fruit in the burning sun. My parents had raised me to be aware of the advantage we had been afforded and the responsibility it brought to us.
I pulled over and rolled down my window. He had a bunch of bananas and a bag of peanuts ready. I waved them away. “What's up”. I asked him. “I...I don't have money to buy books for school.” I reached into my pocket and handed him two fresh 500 naira bills.
"Will this help?” I asked. He looked around nervously before taking the money. One thousand naira was a lot of money to someone whose family probably made about 5,000 naira or less each year. "Thank you, sir," he said. 'Thank you very much.”
When driving home, I wondered if my little friend actually used the money for school-books. What if he's a cheat (骗子)? And then I wondered why I did it. Did I do it to make myself feel better? Was I using him? Later, I realized that I didn't know his name or the least bit about him, nor did I think to ask.
Over the next six months, I was busy working in a news agency in northern Nigeria. Sometime after I returned, I went out for a drive When I was about to pull over, the boy suddenly appeared by my window with a big smile ready on his face
"oh, gosh! Long time."
"Are you in school now?” I asked.
He nodded.
"That's good," I said. A silence fell as we looked at each other, and then I realized what he wanted. "Here," I held out a 500 naira bill. "Take this.” He shook his head and stepped back as if hurt. "What's wrong?” I asked. "It's a gift"
He shook his head again and brought his hand from behind his back. HIS face shone with sweat (汗水)。 He dropped a bunch of bananas and a bag of peanuts in the front seat before he said, "I've been waiting to give these to you."
79. What was the author's first impression of the boy?
A. He seemed to be poor and greedy. B. He seemed to have suffered a lot
C. He seemed younger than his age. D. He seemed good at bargaining
80. The second time the author met the boy, the boy________.
A. told him his purpose of selling fruit and nuts B. wanted to express his thanks
C. asked him for money for his schoolbooks D. tried to take advantage of him
81. Why did the author give his money to the boy?
A. Because he had enough money to do that.
B. Because he had learnt to help others since childhood.
C. Because he held a higher position in the society.
D. Because he had been asked by the news agency to do so.
82. Which of the following best describes the boy?
A. Brave and polite. B. Kind and smart C. Honest and thankful. D. Shy and nervous.
D
With only about 1, 000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone the animal and save the endangered species (物种). That’s a move similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking in a project called “Noah’s Ark”.
Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos, and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen(液体氮). If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A & M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.
It is reported that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.
This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by implanting cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.
“The nuclear transfer (核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available(capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be a scientific breakthrough if it works.” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A& M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.
“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort that is very much needed.”
83. The aim of “Noah’s Ark” project is to _______.
A. make efforts to clone the endangered pandas B. save endangered animals from dying out
C. collect DNA of endangered animals to study D. transfer the nuclear of one animal to another
84. According to Professor Kraemer, the major problem in cloning pandas would be the lack of _______.
A. available panda eggs B. host animals C. qualified researchers D. enough money

A. Kraemer and his team have succeeded in cloning a dog
B. Chinese scientists try to implant a rabbit’s egg into a panda
C. Kraemer will work with Chinese scientists in clone researches
D. about two thousand of species will probably die out in a century

US military is attempting to develop a new style “insect robot” to replace the human soldier to go wherever he can’t. The greatest trouble this project has fallen across is how to enable the robot to fly freely like an insect, said an official of the Pentagon(五角大楼).
The Pentagon is seeking for the cooperation with scientists in hope of developing a new technique by which people can control the insect’s flight direction and pass on the information its eyes or other organs(器官)catch through the equipment set in its body, the official said.
It is thus designed that a tiny controlling chip will be equipped in an insect’s body when it is in chrysalis(蛹). As the insect grows, the cut made when fixing in the chip will be recovered. The chip will exist in for ever. Scientists believe this won’t influence the insect, sound growth or the functions of internal organs.
The terminal target of the project is to set up a global system,in which the insect robots will be stationed in all parts of the world and stick to their posts till a new instruction is received. At that time the military can receive from all over the world clear image information within about 5 meters of the insects and that of a special target within 100 meters.
Years ago, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency of US DOD spent $3,000,000 carrying out a plan for training bees to detect landmines. But, no new progress has so far been made.
“There is enormous difficulty in technology in turning it into reality, such as the insects re-production, their adaptation(适应) to the surroundings and temperature and so on. However, this project is really challenging . If successful, it is equal to making countless small drone(无人机),”said the official of DOD.
87.According to the description of the passage, what is an insect robot like?
A.An insect made of a certain metal. B.A robot looking like an insect.
C. An insect with a chip in its body. D.A tiny flying robot.
88.As for the design that an insect robot can receive and send information, how do you infer
it works?
A.There must be an inset chip well connected with the insect’s brain.
B. The insect’ s eyes and other organs must be replaced by some special equipment.
C.All the insect’s concerned organs must be linked to an insect chip.
D.The insect must be so well trained as to make full use of its organs.
89.When the project is completed,US military will____________.
A.have a clear picture of almost every part of the world
B.have global stations of insect robots
C.see clearly the things within 10 to 100 meters
D.get many insects which obey their orders
90.Of the following technical problems, which is the one the scientists can’t solve so far?
A.They can’t keep the insects growing normally.
B. They can’t ensure the insects to produce their young.
C.They can’t fix a chip in an insect.
D.They can’t control the robot’s flight
