The Internet has become a part of teenage life.

A new report on 3,375 students aged from 10 to 18 in seven Chinese cities found that 38 percent of them believe they use the Internet often.

While most of them get useful information and use the Internet to help in their studies, some are not using it in a good way.

In order to help young people use the Internet in a good way, a textbook on good Internet behavior has started to be used in some Shanghai middle schools this term. The book uses real examples to teach students good ways of using the Internet. The book gives useful advice such as it’s good to read news or find helpful information to study.

Some students also make on-line friends. But if you are meeting a friend off-line, make sure your parents know. Teachers and parents think the book is of great help. A teacher said the book would be a guide for teens using the Internet. Early in the 16th century men were trying to reach Asia by traveling west from Europe. In order to find Asia they had to find a way past South America. The man who finally found the way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific was Ferdinand Magellan. Magellan sailed from Seville in August, 1519 with five ships and about 280 men. Fourteen months later, after spending the cold winter on the coast of Patagonia, he discovered the channel which is now called Magellan Strait(海峡). In November, 1520, after many months of dangers from rocks and storms, the three remaining ships entered the ocean on the other side of South America.

They then continued, hoping to reach Asia. But they did not see any land until they reached the islands off the coast of Asia. Before they arrived at these islands, later known as the Philippines, men were dying of starvation. While they were staying in the Philippines, Magellan was killed in battle. The remaining officers then had to get back to Spain. They decided to sail round Africa. After many difficulties, one ship with eighteen men sailed into Seville three years after leaving. They were all that remained of Magellan’s expedition. However, their achievement was great. They were the first men to sail round the world.

As people were rushing up to get cards for Mother’s Day 2006, the editors of Insparenting.com had a big question inside their minds, “What is a mother to you?” They feel every person has different opinions about a woman called “mother”.

SACRAMENTO(New York Times)—The 2005 Best Ten Citizens of Charity have been honored today by the city government, one of whom is Ms Myrtle Smith. To answer our reporter’s why-question, she told us the following story which, as she put it, had led her to the work for the less fortunate people.

It was Thanksgiving morning and in the crowded kitchen of my small home I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together inside the storm door on the top step.

“Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them.

I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals(凉鞋), wet with heavy snow.

“Come in and I’ll make you a cup of hot cocoa.”

They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread with jam to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started again on my household budget.

The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?”

“Am I rich? Mercy, no!”

I looked at my shabby slipcovers(家具套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer(茶碟) carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” Her voice was hungry with a need that no amount of food could supply. They left after that, holding their bundles of papers against the wind. They hadn’t said “Thank you.” They didn’t need to. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful.

Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.

I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a good steady job—these matched, too.

I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy prints of small sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am. And from then on I can’t help doing more.

Ms Smith concluded her story with a very sweet smile that was worth millions of dollars, even an amount no one could figure out how large!

Sure enough, sometimes a very small matter counts much when it is big enough to change one’s life a little and great enough to make one feel moved and eager to do things one has even never thought of, which oftentimes brings benefits.

47. Why did Ms Smith let the children in?

A. She did it out of great pity on them.

B. She had old papers to sell.

C. She knew them and wanted to make them a cup of cocoa.

D. She wanted to invite them to her Thanksgiving party.

48. The girl thought Ms Smith was rich perhaps in that _______.

A. she saw that the lady’s room was comfortable

B. she saw the cups matched the saucers

C. the writer’s slipcovers were very new

D. the boy thought so

49. From the passage, we can infer that whether you are rich depends on _______.

A. how much money you have had B. how you feel about your life

C. how you have helped others D. what job you are doing

50. Ms Smith left the muddy prints of small sandals on the floor for a while to _______.

A. show her husband that someone had come

B. remind her that she had helped two children

C. show that she was a kind-hearted woman

D. remind herself how rich she was

51. The last two paragraphs imply that _______.

A. a famous person’s smile is worth millions of dollars, or more

B. a meaningful small matter can bring about a great change in one’s life

C. little children can change one’s life style by paying him a visit

D. once a good deed is done, one could become well-known in a short time.

E

Surgery(外科,手术) that can improve the way a person looks is being more and more popular in the United Stated. This kind of surgery is called cosmetic surgery (整形手术), and both men and women are turning to this treatment as a way of keeping their appearance young as well as keeping competitive in their jobs. Men especially are beginning to turn to face-lifts, liposuction (taking fat out of the body), and implants (putting man-made parts into their bodies) to help them look younger. As companies downsize and move younger employees into higher positions, older employees in their late forties and early fifties feel the need to look and act younger in order to stay competitive. A younger look through cosmetic surgery may give an older employee a few more years on the job.

These operations are not without dangers, however. One young woman had an eye operation to get rid of the bags under her eyes. She described her experience as terrible. She said, “When he started cutting, I was fully awake. Even though he’d given me an injection(注射) near my eyes, I saw everything.” She went on to explain, “I knew I had to keep still because of what he was doing. He was removing fat under my eyes. It took about ten minutes. After he finished I felt I couldn’t walk. I was so weak.” Her troubles did not end after the operation. For two weeks, her eyes were swollen and almost completely closed, and even dark glasses could not hide the side effects of the operation.

Liposuction is probably the most popular cosmetic operation in the United States. It seems simple enough. First, a small cut is made over the places where the patient wants the fat removed. Next, a small pipe is put into the cut. A machine is then turned on, and the fat is taken right out of the body. However, as one doctor explained, some problems can happen after the operation. He warned, “Irregular lumps(块) and loose skin can result from this operation. If it is not completely done, liposuction can produce a very lumpy result.” Patients often must have more liposuctions to correct the problem.

52. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?

A. Some people want to have cosmetic surgery in order to keep their jobs.

B. There are two reasons why people have cosmetic surgery.

C. How older employees try to stay on their jobs for more years.

D. A person can win the competition in the job by means of looking young.

53. How many kinds of cosmetic surgeries does the writer mention?

A. 5 B. 4 C. 3 D. 2

54. The underlined word “downsize” (in Para. 1) means _______.

A. develop branches and employ more labourers

B. become smaller in the number of employees

C. move downwards to other places

D. put an end to business

55. What do we know about liposuction from the passage?

A. An unsuccessful liposuction may lead to more operations.

B. Most liposuction operations are successful and safe.

C. A liposuction can be lifelong useful for people to stay young.

D. A bad liposuction needs more doctors to make it up.

A meaningful Activity

Our school has now started an activity called “Build Civilized Classes and a Harmonious Campus”. The topic is “Get Rid of Bad Habits and Greet Civilization”.

Bad habits do exist. Some students throw rubbish everywhere or spit in public. Some wear long hair. Others are even addicted to smoking and drinking. We require that the students break away from these bad habits.

We urge the students to wear their school uniform and be polite to others.

During the activity, we’ll hold a picture show, a competition of classroom and dormitory decorations and so on.

We all hope that we’ll build each class into a civilized one and our campus into a harmonious place.
