The effects of global warming and a changing climate will not be felt equally across our planet. Regional climate changes will likely be very   41  changes in the global average. Differences  42  could be in both the influence and rate of climate change. Furthermore,  43  things, whether they should be natural ecosystems or human settlements, are equally sensitive to changes in climate. And   44  , nations (and indeed regions within nations)vary in their ability to cope and adapt to global warming and a  45  climate.

  第一节  阅读理解

One reaction to all the concern about tropical deforestation is a blank stare  that asks the question, "Since I don't live there, what does it have to do with me?"

The answer is that your way of life, wherever you live in the world, is tied to the tropics(热带) in many ways. If you live in a house, wash your hair, eat fruits and vegetables, drink soda, or drive a car, you can be certain that you are affected by the loss of tropical forests.

Biologically, we are losing the richest regions on earth when, each minute, a piece of tropical forest, the size of ten city blocks ,disappears. As many as five million species of plants, animals, and insects (40 to 50 percent of all living things) live there, and are being lost faster than they can be found and described. Their loss is immeasurable.

Take rubber for example. For many uses, only natural rubber from trees will do. Synthetics are not good enough. Today over half the world's commercial rubber is produced in Malaysia and Indonesia, while the Amazon's rubber industry produces much of the world's four million tons. And rubber is an important material in making gloves, balloons, footwear and many sporting goods. Thousands of other tropical plants are valuable for their industrial use.

Many scientists strongly believe that deforestation contributes to the greenhouse effect -- or heating of the earth from increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. As we destroy forests, we lose their ability to change carbon dioxide into oxygen.

Carbon dioxide levels could double within the next half-century, warming the earth by as much as 4.5 degrees. The result? A partial melt-down of polar ice caps, raising sea levels as much as 24 feet; even 15 feet could threaten anyone living within 35 miles of the coast. Unbelievable? Maybe. But scientists warn that by the time we realize the severe effects of tropical deforestation, it will be 20 years too late. Can tropical deforestation affect our everyday lives? Now, you should have got the answer.

51.The underlined word "synthetics" probably means         .

   A.natural rubber  B.tropical materials

   C.man-made materials D.commercial rubber

52.In the last paragraph the author tries to         .

B.Many of our daily uses are related to the tropical forests.

C.Tropical plants can be used to make industrial products.

The legal limit for driving after drinking alcohol is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood, when tested. But there is no sure way of telling how much you can drink before you reach this limit. It varies with each person depending on your weight, your sex, and what sort of drinks you've had. Some people might reach their limit after only about three standard drinks.

In fact, your driving ability can be affected by just one or two drinks. Even if you're below the legal limit, you could still be taken to court if a police officer thinks your driving has been affected by alcohol.

It takes hours for the body to get rid of the alcohol in one standard drink. So, if you have a heavy drinking session in the evening, you might find that your driving ability is still affected the next morning, or you could even find that you're still over the legal limit. In addition, if you've had a few drinks at lunchtime, another one or two drinks in the early evening may well put you over the legal limit till late in the night.

In a test with professional drivers, the more alcoholic drinks they had had, the more certain they were that they could drive a test course through a set of moveable posts and the less able they were to do it! So the only way to be sure you're safe is not to drink at all.

Alcohol is major cause of road traffic accidents. One in three of the drivers killed in road accidents have levels of alcohol which are over the legal limit, and road accidents after drinking are the biggest cause of death among young men. More than half of the people stopped by the police to take a breath analyzer test have a blood alcohol concentration of more than twice the legal limit.

It is important to remember that driving after you've been drinking doesn't just affect you. If you're involved in an accident, it affects a lot of other people as well, not least the person you might kill or injure.

56.Which of the following statements in NOT true?

A.Three standard drinks may cause some people to reach the legal limit.

B.There is no sure way of telling how much you can drink before you reach the legal limit.

C.The legal limit for driving after drinking is 0.08g of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood.

D.The amount of alcohol a person can drink before reaching legal limit is the same for different people.

57.We may find that the alcohol in our blood is over the legal limit in the evening after we had a few drinks at noon because          .

   A.the drinks are too strong

B.the alcohol in our drink is likely to get out of our body

C.our body needs some time to get the alcohol out of our body

D.our body is sensitive to alcohol

58.We may infer that even a professional driver       if he drinks heavily.

A.will probably fail to pass through a set of movable posts

B.will certainly pass through a set of movable posts

C.will hardly be confident about their ability to pass through a set of movable posts

D.will be absolutely capable of passing through a set of movable posts.

  59.This passage indicates that           .

A.a driver who does not take any alcohol will not die in road accidents

B.those who drink must be killed

C.more young men die in drink-related accidents than in any other way

D.one in three of the drivers often drinks a lot

60.One of the writer's purposes in writing the passage is to tell you that          .

B.driving after drinking may put many lives at risk

   C.safe drinking is impossible

D.the manner of drinking is meaningless

Want to travel as cheaply as possible while enjoying the great scenery as much as you like?

Backpacking is the way. As the most popular traveling choice among young western people, backpacking allows you to travel at your own free will. Carrying a tent, a sleeping bag and clothes, backpackers also need to pack an attitude that will help them deal with many mental and physical challenges.

The rich might stay in expensive hotels where everything is provided. But backpackers carry everything in a large bag and rely on themselves to travel through unknown places.

To travel with as little money as possible, they stay in cheap hotels called youth hotels, or on the campuses of schools and universities, and they even sleep in railway stations, in tents, or under bridges.

It is a thrill to put our ability to test and challenge ourselves with sorts of difficulties we might come across. So, backpacking is something young people can hardly deny.

Young people in Europe often travel around by train. Now, with place tickets dropping in price, more are traveling to distant countries, such as Australia and China. And some just travel within their own countries.

But no matter where a backpacker travels, planning in advance is important if her or she wants to enjoy the trip.

  Clothing

In summer, light, waterproof clothes are best. Backpackers must remember to travel lightly and not pack too many clothes.

  Medicine

Three are many medicines, especially for summer, such as those for sunstroke, snake bites and mosquitoes. Others are useful in every season, such as those for common colds, poisoning, and diarrhea.

  Cards

Three types of cards are invaluable for backpacker: student Identity Card personal ID and a credit card.

A student ID card can be helpful for saving money. It often gets train tickets and entrance tickets for cheaper prices in many Western countries.

Personal ID card can, not only get you out of trouble with local police, but also prove useful in all sorts of other situations.

Carrying a credit card can be a safe way of carrying money, as cash can easily get lost, stolen or wet.

Travelers in a foreign country must always take care of their visas and passports.

And of course, don't forget to enjoy your trip!

Long bus rides are like television shows. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end an end with commercials thrown in every three or four minutes. The commercials are unavoidable. They happen whether you want them or not. Every couple of minutes a billboard glides by outside the bus window. "Buy Super Clean Toothpaste." "Drink Good Wet Root Beer." "Fill up with Pacific Gas. "Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off, are you spared the unending cry of "You Need It! Buy It Now!"

The beginning of the ride is comfortable and somewhat exciting, even if you've traveled that way before. Usually some things have changed new houses, new buildings, sometimes even a new road. The bus driver has a style of driving and it's fun to try to figure it out the first hour or so. If the driver is particularly reckless (鲁莽的) or daring, the ride can be as thrilling  as a suspense story. Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the right? or the left? hand lane? After a while, of course, the excitement dies down. Sleeping for a while helps pass the middle hours of the ride. Food always makes bus rides more interesting. But you've got to be careful of what kind of food you eat. Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops.

The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and there's a kind of expectation and excitement in that. The seat of course, has become harder as the hours have passed. By now you've sat with your legs crossed, with your hands in your lap, with your hands on the armrests even with your hands crossed behind your head. The end comes just at no more ways to sit.

66.According to the passage, what do the passengers usually see when they are on a long bus trip?

   A.bus drivers who aren't reckless  B.driving alone

C.a television set on the bus  D.no billboards along the road

  Dear David,

How time flies! I have been in China for nearly half a year. The people here are very friendly to me and I enjoy my life here.

But David, I am sorry to hear that you've taken up smoking. As it is known to all, smoking has a lot of harmful effects such a causing damage to one's heart and lungs, making one smell terrible and so on. Statistics from the leading countries of the world have also proved that the rates of getting heart disease, high blood pressure and cancer are much higher if one smokes. On the other hand, we can't ignore the dangerous effects of secondary smoking which is considered as slow-motion murder. Therefore I do hope you can quit smoking as soon as possible and lead a healthy life again.

  Yours,

  Tomas
